"Hokie" (in its variousforms) has been around at least since1842. “Hokie” was a word that peoplewould say to express great feeling,approval, excitement, and surprise.“Hokie” then, synonymous with wordslike 'hooray,' or 'yeah,' or 'rah.’The word "hokie" came from the "OldHokie" spirit yell created in 1896 byO.M. Stull for a contest to find a newschool spirit yell when the college'sname was changed.The mascot is the Hokie Bird,a turkey‐like bird. The teams wereoriginally called the "FightingGobblers," and the turkey motif waskept even after the name change.
