To accompany the Chrysler Museum’s major exhibit of works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra brings a concert of turn-of-the-century French works that dance and dazzle in colorful arrays. The music of orchestral favorite Claude Debussy in both his Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Nocturnes bookend Camille Saint-Saëns’ Second Piano Concerto, performed by the graceful Alon Goldstein. The program concludes with Albert Roussel’s Bacchus et Ariane Suite No. 2. Like the Parisian dancing girls of Toulouse-Lautrec’s famous images, Roussel’s ballet conceals the mischievous Bacchus behind a veil of enchantment.

Well-known to VSO audiences, composer Kenneth Fuchs brings us a world premiere. This is a continuation of more than 30 years of collaboration between Fuchs and Music Director JoAnn Falletta, beginning in 1985 when they were students at Juilliard. Written specifically for VSO Principal Cellist Michael Daniels and his brother David, this piece is based on the poems of artist and writer Judith Wolf. The performance concludes with Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, a romantic staple with a heart-melting horn solo in the second movement, a favorite among musicians everywhere.

popular female jazz singer in the United States for nearly half a century, selling more than 40 million albums and receiving 13 Grammy awards. Armstrong, born in New Orleans in 1901, was an inventive and pioneering jazz trumpet and cornet player. Together, their music changed the course of American music history. HOLIDAY BRASS FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2016 | 7:30PM

Aaron Copland, one of the most influential 20th-century composers, forged a uniquely American identity in orchestral music. Inspired by folk songs and jazz, his music often had an accessible style and rhythmic vitality. His open intervals, slowly progressing harmonies and songful melodies evoke the vastly open frontier landscapes and the optimistic pioneering spirit of the American West. Copland’s tone is hopeful, direct and sincere. As the election of our 45th American President approaches, we present a program of music that pays homage to our ancestors and expresses the sentiments of landmark historical speeches, including the Gettysburg Address. Join us to celebrate the musical and historical heritage we all share!

INTRIGUE & EXOTICISM FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2017 | 7:30PM

The music of Mozart and Ravel is separated by more than a century, but they were both enchanted by the melodies, rhythms and harmonies they dreamed about from the East. Mozart’s opera The Abduction from the Seraglio, and his Violin Concerto No. 5, “The Turkish” (performed here by the VSO’s own Yun Zhang) used exotic melodies and rhythms to evoke the Turkish culture to his Austrian audiences, while Ravel’s Laideronette transported the imaginations of his French countrymen to far-away lands in Asia. Join us as we explore how composers depict the music of foreign lands and how music may reveal more about the society that produces it than the society it imitates.

Composers often look to literary traditions to spark their musical imaginations, and the British Isles offer a treasure trove of folklore and folksongs! Malcolm Arnold’s Tam o’Shanter Overture is an excellent example of program music, which depicts a character, scene or story. As in his last orchestral work, the Suite on English Folk Tunes, Benjamin Britten drew heavily from folksongs throughout his career and appreciated “the sweetness of the melodies.” Beethoven was also a prolific composer of folksong settings and, in fact, he wrote more in this genre than any other. Through a concert rich with the heritage of the British Isles, we will explore the enduring link between words and music.

HOLIDAY BRASS

Kick off the holiday season with the Academy Award-winning movie The Snowman. The charming, animated film follows the story of a young boy and his magical friendship with a snowman, while the VSO performs Howard Blake’s score, including the popular song “Walking in the Air.” “The Gift of the Magi,” based on O. Henry’s beloved short story, is a profound message of love and generosity. It is the tale of Jim and Della, a young couple living in a shabby New York tenement, and their Christmas gifts to one another, bought by sacrificing what they each hold most dear. Joining the VSO on stage will be the Virginia Children’s Chorus and narrator to bring the story to life!
