Pleasants’ Printing Office, K.chmnnd. J——■BBfgJA. 11. "W. tub cause or RELIGIOUS TOLERATION. Our city has lately been inte'^ptrd by the meeting of the Association of the D iptists. ■— I he number of stran- gers who flocked hither, the rcspec *- | bility of the sect, the simplicity erf their principles, and the enthusiasm ivi'h which their ministers propagate their tenets, gave a certain eclat to their ex- ertions and a new air to the occupati- ons of the city. The Association met pn Friday night, the 12th, and dissol- ved on Monday night, 9 o’clock. A- bout 800 stranrrvrs are estimated to have been present—the ordained and licensed preachers between 30 and 46, of whom six or seveu came from the other Association districts. There were no proceedings of a ge- neral nature, conducted under the aus- pices of this meeting. On Sunday lorenoon, the preaching was carried on at the Capitol, whither flowed a tido of population, which the Hall of th» House of Delegate*could not contain —and at the Baptist and Msthodifct meeting Houses—by different minis- ters, who interchanged in the after-*, noon. A singular degree ofharmony is said to have prevailed v the lovers of piety j” Baptists and ^ Methodius. It was pleasing to seer this spectacle of concord among them. <*' 14 The Methodists, (said a distinguish- ed Baptist) acted on this occasion a liberal and friendly part, not only in furnishing their meeting house from first to list, but in attending the meet- ings at the different places, and in join- ing with apparent cordiality in the re- ligious exercises—for which the As*, sociation expressed their thauks.” This Association is called the Do- ver Association—th^re are in this district 37 church* s and 9628 members, as may he seen by reference to Sem- ple’s History of the Virginia Baptists,”* p. 90-91—a work lately published, and containing a mine of Baptismal infor- mation, couched in the clearest Sc sim- plest stvle. The government of the Baptist Church is extremely simple and equal. There are 15 whole Associations in -he state, besides four others which extend into other states. Each one has a constitution independent of the rest. The government both of the asso- ciations, the churches, and, indeed, <.f the whole society in Virginia, and throughout the world, isupinently re- ublican; for the decisions arc always made by the majority. They are all in a perfect equality, except so far as hey may be distinguished by their ta- lents, their enthusiasm, and their ser- vices. There are no dignitaries a- mong their ministers. 'The purpose of the association is, to advise the churches in all intricate cases of discipline ; to preserve **n u- niformity of sentiments and principles j o cultivate an acquaintance between the churches and their members; and to supply vacant churches by the ap- pointment ol neighboring pastors to at- tend them at stated periods. Accord- ing to the Dover constitution, each church can send 3 delegates and may send le*»8. They are generally select- ed by the votes of the members of the chu ch, and receive no pecuniary com- pensation for their services. Besides these Associations, there is a more general Convention or General Meeting ol Correspondence, which has been on foot for a few years, and in- tended to knit the several Associations together. It has not, however, yet re- ceived the sauction of all these bodies in Virginia. The whole number of Baptists in mis state, is computed by Mr. Semple it 31,052. There was a period in this state when he Baptists and other Dissenters were persecuted, and a particular church was favored and est tblished by the law. But the revolution of America over-threw the despotism of the church -«3 well as that, of the state—as our go. V- rnrpvnt is independent of G. Bri- tain, so religion is independent of our govc nment. Universal Toleration is »siablished by our constitution and laws, as well as by the feelings of the people. We have arrived at that hap- py summit, which had been viewed by the sages of Europe, as a iheorrti- cal Elysium, rather to be desired than enjoyed ; where every man is free to follow the dictates of his own consci- ence.—We have solved the problem, which ha l been so long agitated in iha old n# rid—we have shewn how much h ppioras and harmony spring from rel gi.,us Toleration.—When will the j Ir sh Catholic or he E .glish Disnn- j t r b»: itblc to rca ize ti.cse beatific t »- sioua l r i Enquirer*
