weeks

Causes• Nonpolio-enteroviruses cause 90%

of viral meningitis• Arboviruses  accounts for 5%

Enteroviruses• Second most common• Single positive stranded RNA

Symptoms• Fever• Headache• Confusion• Seizures• Sleepiness • Stiff neck• Sensitivity to light• Lack of interest in eating or drinking • Skin rash

Frequency• More than 10,000 cases annually• Underreported

Transmittance

• Fecal-oral route • Infected respiratory secretions

Treatment• Pain medication for headaches• Rest• Fluids• Antiviral medication

Risk• Drops with age• Most common in late summer early

fall

Precautions• MMR vaccine• Hand washing
