ASHBROOK CENTER | DIRECTOR’S CLUB DECEMBER 2016

“An Ashbrook education is a liberating experience. Your professors never tell you what to think, but rather they teach you

how to think.” -Naomi Sims, a junior Ashbrook Scholar from Grapevine, Texas,

majoring in Creative Writing and Political Science.

The ratification of the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution is observed on the 15th of December each year. We invite you to celebrate this moment in American history by reading the Bill of Rights. We hope you will discuss the text and consider how it applies to the everyday lives of Americans. You can find more information on our Teaching American History website at tah.org/bor.

Coming Soon… As a member of Ashbrook’s Director’s Club, you will be invited to attend a Rediscovering America Weekend at a historic site in Fall 2017. Please check your next VIP Report for more information.

Cal Thomas speaks to the Ashbrook Scholars following his speech, “What Works: Common Sense Solutions for a

Stronger America,” as part of the Ashbrook Major Issues Lecture Series.

Ashbrook’s Master of Arts in American History and Government Program at Ashland University is the

only one of its kind in the nation, specifically designed for middle and high school teachers.

Ashbrook is transforming the way American history and civics are taught in America’s classrooms by putting an Ashbrook Teacher in every one of the nation’s 35,000 secondary schools.

Rediscovering America is well underway and has held more than 500 programs on the ground across the country. • A one-day teacher seminar was held at the

Ashbrook Center about the historical significance of the 2016 Presidential Election using primary documents from throughout American history. The seminar was led by David Tucker and Chris Burkett, Co-Director of the Ashbrook Scholar program;

• A weekend teacher’s colloquium was held at Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage with Daniel Monroe, Professor of History at Millikin University. Participants discussed the Jackson Presidency and its impact on the republican understanding of government.

In December, we will host a Saturday Morning Webinar on the landmark Supreme Court Case: Gideon v. Wainwright. For special Director’s Club access to this webinar, please contact Stacey Cadman.
