Influences: Personal

Van Gogh’s life was such a failure that he was never able to keep his friends or earn a living. He was brought up in a religious atmosphere and lacked self confidence

For Van Gogh, his paintings were a way to regulate the world and zone out reality because he was such a failure. These feelings made Van Gogh go through a Dutch period where all his paintings were sad and gloomy.

During his time with the miners, Van Gogh painted the rough lives of the peasants with which he lived. One of these works, The Potato Eaters (1885), is known as his early masterpiece.

Van Gogh only sold one painting in his life

Influences: Art World

In 1886, as he went to visit his brother Theo in France, he studied with Pissarro, Monet, and Gaugin and began to lighten his very dark palette also to paint in the short brushstrokes of the impressionists.

His subject matter changed, after he met Pissarro, from the world of peasants to a typically impressionistic subject matter, such as cafés and cityscapes around Montmartre, Paris. He also copied Japanese prints.

He relocated himself to Arles, where he began a frenzy of painting that showed his love for the town, countryside and sunlight of the area. Thus, came the paintings Bedroom at Arles (1888), The Night Café (1888), and Starry Night (1889).

Some of Van Gogh’s influences include Jean-François Millet, Rembrandt and Honoré Daumier.

Influences: Historical

During Van Gogh's Dutch period (1880–1886) he created works in which his overriding concerns for his fellow man were growing. His subjects were poor people, miners, peasants, and inhabitants of almshouses, or houses for the poor.

Shortly after his Dutch period Van Gogh was largely under the influence of the impressionists, a style of painting where the artist concentrates on the impression of a scene by the use of light and color. Especially influenced by Camille Pissarro, Van Gogh was persuaded to give up the gloomy tones of his Dutch period for bright, high-keyed colors.

During Van Gogh's stay at the asylum, his art changed a lot. His colors lost the bright colors of the Arles period: yellows became coppers; reds became brownish tones. He applied the paint more violently with thicker layers. Van Gogh was drawn to objects in nature under stress: whirling suns, twisted cypress trees, and huge mountains. In Starry Night (1889) the whole world seems engulfed by circular movements. This can also be seen in Cordeville(1890).

Conclusion

Vincent Van Gogh lived a bit of a depressing life, having only sold one painting and being mentally ill. Van Gogh today is one of the most famous artists and his memory lives strong. Most people don’t know the story of his life and how that has driven him to create magnificent pieces of art, not to mention getting sent to the asylum. Van Gogh’s life experiences, know knowing how bad they were, had driven him to create some of the most amazing artworks such as in the Dutch Period where he created The Potato Eaters. Also, shortly after being in the Asylum he created my favorite painting Starry Night and Cordeville. Looking back now you can see that sometimes things are not always as bad as they seem.
