About the City of Miami

The City of Miami known as the “Magic City” is located in Southeast Florida, in Miami-Dade County on the Miami River, between the Florida Everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. Since its incorporation in 1896, the City has grown tremendously, transforming it into one of the world’s renowned centers where people can work, live and play while enjoying a high quality of life.The City of Miami, known for its diverse culture and ethnicities is the largest municipality in Miami-Dade County. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 362,470. By the year 2010 the population in the City is projected to rise to 390,191. Miami which is known as the Gateway to Latin America attracts a tremendous amount  of  foreign born people, resulting in a large Latin American population that includes Cubans, Nicaraguans, Colombians, Venezuelans, Puerto Ricans, Argentineans, Ecuadorians, Brazilians, Dominicans, Haitians and Mexicans. According to the 2000 U.S. census, the City has a 60 percent Hispanic population, a 22.3 percent African-American population and a 11.9 percent White/other population.

Miami Mango FestivalThe significance and popularity of the Mango eventually led to an Indian festival starting in 1987. The two-day festival soon became so popular other versions began showing up in Jamaica and the Philippines before joining the ranks of Florida festivals over a decade ago. This is a large Miami event featuring many locally grown species of the tropical fruit, making it one of the more unique Florida festivals. It is also a great way to spend a day and satisfy some hunger pains. There will also be various workshops and entertainment to check out, so there is plenty to do here for all ages.

• Monuments: Miami is home to many entertainment venues, theaters, museums, parks and performing arts centers.

• The newest addition to the Miami arts scene is the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, the second-largest performing arts center in the United States after the Lincoln Center in New York City, and is the home of the Florida Grand Opera.

• Miami is also a major fashion center, home to models and some of the top modelling agencies in the world. Miami is also host to many fashion shows and events, including the annual Miami Fashion Week and the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Miami held in the Wynwood Art District. Miami is also the home of the world's largest art exhibition, dubbed the "Olympics of Art", Art Basel Miami Beach. The event is held annually in December, and attracts thousands of visitors from around the world.
