Monthly Updates Upcoming Events
August
In the Roman calendar, August was originally
named Sixtilis, because it was the sixth month.
When creating the Julian calendar, Julius Ceasar
renamed the month “August” after Augustus
Caesar, Julius Caesar's nephew. Julius choose this
month to name August because he considered
the sixth month to be lucky. Originally, Sixtilis had
30 days in the month, but after being named
August, Augustus “took” one day from February
and added it, so it would have the same number
of days as July, the month that honored his uncle.
The monthly flower is the gladiolus.
The gladiolus symbolizes strength of character,
moral integrity and sincerity. The gladiolus is also
the flower symbolizing 40 years of marriage.
