When creating the Julian calendar, Julius Ceasar renamed the month “August” after Augustus Caesar, Julius Caesar's nephew. Julius choose this month to name August because he considered the sixth month to be lucky. Originally, Sixtilis had 30 days in the month, but after being named August, Augustus “took” one day from February and added it, so it would have the same number of days as July, the month that honored his uncle. The monthly flower is the gladiolus. The gladiolus symbolizes strength of character, moral integrity and sincerity. The gladiolus is also the flower symbolizing 40 years of marriage. She is the owner of a pub that has been in her family since they immigrated to America. She wants to retire and hand the pub over to her son, but she must overcome her old- world views and gain faith in her son.
