As 2020 approaches ever more rapidly, our Title 24 Engineering team has been studying the impacts of the new Energy Code standards that take effect next year. Every 3 years the California Energy Commission (CEC) ramps up the energy efficiency requirements for new buildings throughout the state, and this year the changes are significant. Builders will be spending thousands of addional dollars on each home to bring down the annual home energy usage by another 10% or so. Over the last 25 years, the cumulave effect of these energy codes has driven down the energy consumpon of new homes by about 75%. That’s prey amazing, isn’t it? One of the biggest changes for 2020 is the requirement that almost all new homes install Solar PV on their roofs. Today about 50% of new homes come with Solar; next year that percentage will move up to around 95%. This provides our Solar Division with a much larger market opportunity! Aside from the “Solar Mandate”, the CEC is also increasing the efficiency of the home envelope. Encouraged upgrades include 2x6 walls with R-19 insulaon and Unvented “Condioned Acs”, both of which are expensive. In the case of Condioned Acs, they are complex and potenally “mold inducing”, which is not a posive feature for a home. There is however a relavely new energy efficiency credit for “Heat Recovery Venlator” systems, or HRV’s. These systems are designed to provide the connuous venlaon that our codes require, but do so while also recovering most of the heat (or cool) that the home owner paid to generate with their heang and cooling system. This provides a great opportunity for Villara to dust off an old product that we designed back in 2002; the old “Beutler Modular Heat Recovery Venlator”. We designed and installed about a thousand of those units back then, as requested by US Homes, who wanted to deal posively with indoor air quality and potenal mold development in our new, ever-ghter homes. The product had a short run however, as the recession that began in 2006 siphoned of all money for “non-essenal” systems, which effecvely killed the “MHRV”. Now, with the 2020 T24 code, HRV’s receive very large and meaningful energy efficiency credits, while also providing the code-required connuous fresh air venlaon in a customer friendly, energy efficient manner. This all served as the back drop for forming a dedicated team of Villara experts that could review the old MHRV system, tack on some new innovave patentable ideas, and test them to confirm and ulmately cerfy the energy efficiency of the system. Builders will be spending thousands of additional dollars on each home to bring down the annual home energy usage by another 10% or so. Over the last 25 years, the cumulative effect of these energy codes has driven down the energy consumption of new homes by about 75%. That’s pretty amazing, isn’t it?

One of the biggest changes for 2020 is the requirement that almost all new homes install Solar PV on their roofs. Today about 50% of new homes come with Solar; next year that percentage will move up to around 95%. This provides our Solar Division with a much larger market opportunity!

Aside from the “Solar Mandate”, the CEC is also increasing the efficiency of the home envelope. Encouraged upgrades include 2x6 walls with R-19 insulation and Unvented “Conditioned Attics”, both of which are expensive. In the case of Conditioned Attics, they are complex and potentially “mold inducing”, which is not a positive feature for a home.

There is however a relatively new energy efficiency credit for “Heat Recovery Ventilator” systems, or HRV’s. These systems are designed to provide the continuous ventilation that our codes require, but do so while also recovering most of the heat (or cool) that the home owner paid to

generate with their heating and cooling system. This provides a great opportunity for Villara to dust off an old product that we designed back in 2002; the old “Beutler Modular Heat Recovery Ventilator”. We designed and installed about a thousand of those units back then, as requested by US Homes, who wanted to deal positively with indoor air quality and potential mold development in our new, ever-tighter homes. The product had a short run however, as the recession that began in 2006 siphoned of all money for “non-essential” systems, which effectively killed the “MHRV”.

Now, with the 2020 T24 code, HRV’s receive very large and meaningful energy efficiency credits, while also providing the code-required continuous fresh air ventilation in a customer friendly, energy efficient manner.

This all served as the back drop for forming a dedicated team of Villara experts that could review the old MHRV system, tack on some new innovative patentable ideas, and test them to confirm and ultimately certify the energy efficiency of the system.

VILLARA INNOVATION: - WHAT A GREAT TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENT! -

For the next 18 months or so we “casually” worked on a new design concept for an HRV system that incorporated a unique “Duct-in-Duct” heat exchanger, but there were no recognized energy credits for the system, so builder interest would have been minimal. In March of this year though our T24 team led by Marcos Hernandez uncovered the very large new T24 credit for HRV’s, so the race was on to quickly design, test, and certify a cost-effective HRV system that can provide unique value to our home builders and their home buyers.

In late March we formed the team and began meeting weekly, pressing very hard to accomplish something that no one else has done. The team members include:

• Rick Wylie• Scott Sahota• Marc Disalvo• Bob Radcliff• Richard Morley• Felix Ortiz• Craig Hartsough• Jack Orejel• Mike Bettencourt• Tatyana Yakushev• Marcos Hernandez• Jeff Starsky• Kina Semon• Rob Penrod

Whereas in 2002 we did not have any need to certify our MHRV system, our new “Heat-Keeper” HVS system needs formal certification from a Canadian entity called the Home Ventilation Institute (HVI). By the way, “Heat-Keeper” is a working name; we will be working on branding it as we move forward. With many of our builders “chomping at the bit” to design their new projects for 2020 standards, we needed to accelerate the design and certification of our new prod-uct.Beacause of this we secured the earliest testing date through HVI of June 24. This created a very real and pressing deadline to finalize our design, document its installation and operation, and get it shipped out by June 17 in order to be at the test lab by the 24th.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

TODAY’S RECIPE IDEA:HOMEMADE HAMBURGER HELPER

I just found this great recipe using the Yummly app. Yummly is a great way to find recipe inspiration and create shopping lists. You should definitely try it out.

INGREDIENTS:• 1 Lbs. ground beef• 1 Tbs cornstarch• 2 tsp paprika• 1 tsp onion powder• 1 tsp garlic powder• Salt• Pepper• 1 tsp sugar• 1 Cup hot water• 2 Cup milk• 1 1/2 Cup macaroni• 1 Cup shredded cheddar

DIRECTIONS:1. Go ahead and brown your ground beef in a fairly deep pan or pot (you’ll be adding a lot of liquid).2. Drain the fat off the meat and put it back in the pan/pot. Add spices, cornstarch, water, pasta and milk and bring to a boil.3. Bring your heat down to a simmer and let simmer until the pasta is finished.4. Add your cheddar cheese and turn off the heat. Stir until the cheese is melted.5. Let sit for a few minutes and serve!

This is SO tasty! I love to add some ketchup to mine so it’s more

“burger” like. I’ve heard some people love THIS SUPER POPULAR

STUFF on it as well
