Whatever the weather, children of all ageswill love an Easter egg hunt. Try one of these ideas and have a cracking good

time!l For a simple hunt, put plasticeggs around the house or gardenthat children have to collect to win aprize, or hide small chocolate eggsfor them to collect in a basket.l Add clues to make the search abit harder. Alternatively, create atreasure map and mark each eggwith an X.l Young children will enjoyfollowing a trail of paper bunnyfootprints, or a long piece of stringto reach their prize.l Add a fun educational twist usingnumbered cardboard egg shapes –children can collect odd or evennumbers, or get the highest total towin a prize. You could also put theletters of an Easter-themed word onthe shapes and challenge them tosolve the anagram. l Set up an ‘obstacle’ hunt. To win

each egg, children have to complete a challenge, such as doing ten star jumps, singing a nurseryrhyme, or completing a craft activity. l If you have a mixed group of children, prepare

individual checklists so they eachfind only what is on their list and nomore – for example, two chocolatebunnies, three silver eggs and four fluffy chicks. Alex Brown

An eggs-cellent idea!

Why not colour your eggs?Add 1-2 teaspoons of food colouring(the type which comes in little bottleswill do) per cup of water, and add 1tablespoon of vinegar (preventscracking). Make sure the bowl or cupyou are using is big enough to takean egg as well without overflowing.

The eggs have to be still hot fromboiling (put into cold water, bring tothe boil and boil for another 5 min-utes). Put them into the colouring andleave until sufficient depth of colour-ing is reached. Take your egg out, letit dry and polish it with a cloth – and adrop of oil or a bit of butter for a goodshine. The eggs will keep in the fridgefor several days.

Fun Factsabout ChocolateChocolate comes from the Aztec word

‘xocolatl’, meaning bitter water. Originally itwas consumed as a drink made from cacaobeans, chillies, achiote and cornmeal. EmperorMontezuma drank 50 golden goblets every day!

Hitchcock used chocolate syrup for blood inthe famous 45-second shower scene in his

movie Psycho.

Over 66 percent of the world’s cacao isproduced in Africa. The US consumes the

most chocolate per year, but the Swissconsume the most per capita.

Columbus brought the cocoa bean to Europe, but Cortez first realised its commercial

value. With the addition of cane sugar thechocolate drink became very popular, but itwasn’t until 1842 that the first chocolate barwas produced by Cadbury.

One unfortunate bishop was poisoned bychocolate-addicted parishioners because

he tried to ban its consumption during churchservices.

Largest and longest records go to Nestlé forcreating the largest cup of hot chocolate

(2,400 litres) in November 2010, and to MircoDella Vecchia for producing the longestchocolate bar measuring 15.9m a year later.

Aphrodisiacal qualities are believed by manyto be contained in chocolate.

Thorntons produced the world’s biggestchocolate bar (six tonnes of it!) in October

2011 to celebrate its 100th birthday.

Energy-seeking Napoleon always carriedchocolate with him to use as a pick-me-up

whenever he needed a boost.

Local delivery service available up to 5 miles (Minimum order £20, Billingshurst £15)

“…customers return again and again!”My last visit to Monsoon (Village Tweet, February) made the observation that many customers return againand again. I found myself in the village one lunchtime last week so decided to do just that! And, it being aWednesday, I was pleased to take advantage of Monsoon’s popular midweek Eat-in offer!

This time I plumped for a Chicken Podina. The menu described this as being made with coriander, greenpepper, fresh mint and green chilli. (Lamb, prawn or salmon versions are also available). As usual, service waswithout fault and the curry soon arrived, accompanied by pilau rice. The Podina was divine – the chicken wassucculent, the sauce fairly thick (just how I like it) and the seasoning – as ever – spot on. Not an overly hotcurry but full of flavour, as was the rice. Some may think rice is rice – thankfully Monsoon do not agree!

If you have yet to try a meal at Monsoon you are missing out, especially with such amazing special offersoften available. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful local restaurant. Grahame Pearson

BEAT has been operating as your local Community FirstResponder (CFR) group since 2006. CFRs are volunteerswho attend certain 999 calls with the ambulance service,

the idea being that as they are local, CFRs will often arrivebefore an ambulance so the patient will receive treatmentsooner. CFRs are trained in basic life support and carry arange of medical equipment including a defibrillator, a devicethat could re-start a heart that had stopped.

BEAT is always looking for new members to help the groupprovide more cover. The role is incredibly interesting andrewarding and is a great way to help people in the area youlive; you may even literally save a life! Could you provide covera few hours per week, either from home or work? Full trainingis given and all equipment is supplied by BEAT, a registered

charity. The role is very flexible and you can vary the times youcan provide cover if needed. All of BEAT’s current membersare on call around work, family and other commitments.

BEAT also sets up Public Access Defibrillators in thecommunity; to date the group has set up ten. BEAT also offerstraining sessions to local clubs and groups in basic life supportsuch as how to carry out effective CPR. We would like to seeas many members of the public trained in CPR as possible.

If you would like to find out more about becoming a CFR, or would like details of the training sessions we offer, please contact us.Phone: Paul Berry (01403) 786185Online: beatresponers.orgTwitter: @BEATresponders

Hi, I’m Tracy Brewster-Brown,your local Homeopath with pastexperience working as a qualifiednurse. I have knowledge andexperience working with adultsand children in both areas ofmedicine covering a wide rangeof complaints. I enjoy helpingpeople and have chosen tointegrate homeopathy into my lifebecause I believe in the

fundamental ethos that it stands for – to promote thebody’s own capabilities to heal itself. The human bodyis unique and continually surprises me in its abilities toadapt to life’s stresses and strains, which ultimatelycan lead to poor health if we don’t listen to it, yet it isstill capable of bouncing back if we respond!

I first approached homeopathy as a patient when Ifelt I needed help with my emotions following the birthof my fourth baby. I didn’t want to take anti-depressants but felt I wasn’t quite coping either and sowent to see a great homeopath after recommendationfrom a friend. I responded well to treatment and theninvolved all my family in the natural treatment whenneeded. I do advocate seeing your GP to get adiagnosis and will often refer you back to them.Together we can then choose which medicine isappropriate for your condition. I consider homeopathy

as a complementary therapy not alternative as I do notbelieve that any one form of medicine is the best but Ilike to have the knowledge and freedom to make aninformed choice about my own health.

As a homeopath I love to meet new people and usemy nursing knowledge as a sound medical basis fortreating my patients. I am a good listener, empatheticand calm. My job is to match the right homeopathicmedicine to the individual characteristics of yourcomplaint. I build a picture of you by asking questionsabout how you are feeling in yourself, the sensationsyour body is feeling and how you react to things in life.I take into account your past medical history, diet, lifestyle and personality type as well as your currentphysical or emotional symptoms. Homeopathy can beused by everyone and can help with many conditions ina gentle and effective manner. It can support throughshort bursts of ill health or injury as well as duringperiods of growth, change and hormonal fluctuations.

I am registered with the Society of Homeopaths, the largest body governing the training and practice ofhomeopaths in the UK.Tracy Brewster-Brown

Billingshurst Bowling Club was formed in1932 at its present location, just off StationRoad beyond the ‘old cricket field’. The site

was originally leased from Miss Puttock for apeppercorn rent of a shilling a year. The club wasformed by a group of mainly local tradesmen, hence most matches in the early days wereplayed on Wednesday afternoons – early closingday. The green had only three rinks and thegrass was cut with a hand-mower. Obtaining theservices of a groundsman always proved difficult, the pay being low at sixpence per hour. Thepavilion was very basic – the only sanitation wasa wood and corrugated metal affair with a bucket!

Since the 1950’s many improvements havebeen carried out – the green extended to sixrinks, installation of mains water and electricity, the original clubhouse enlarged to incorporatechanging rooms, a kitchen, lounge area and flushtoilets. A second pavilion has been erected toprovide comfortable accommodation to enjoy tea

and supper refreshments after matches. Anautomated watering system has been installed, afar cry from loaning a standpipe and long hosefrom the cricket club! For the Millennium, a newtoilet block was built that included facilities for thedisabled. In 2012 a new ‘disabled friendly’ accesswas installed.

Nowadays the club plays friendly mixedmatches against many clubs in West Sussex andSurrey. Matches are played on weekdays and atweekends, both afternoons and evenings. Inaddition, there is a full range of club competitionsand friendly sessions. Ladies and gents playtogether and everyone is encouraged to join in.All abilities are catered for, from beginners up tocounty standard. Newcomers are amazed at howquickly they pick up the game, although it is notquite as easy as it appears on television!

Further information can be obtained from theclub secretary, Beryl Barraclough: (01403)784599.

Johnny Ball, children’s TV presenterand mathematician, inspired Year 5and 6 children from the Billingshurstlocality of schools about maths andscience at Billingshurst Primary

School on 6th February.Children from St Mary’s

Pulborough, Loxwood,Itchingfield, Slinfold,William Penn, WisboroughGreen, Plaistow andKirdford, Shipley, Rudgwickand Billingshurst PrimarySchool were enthralled andinspired by Johnny as, foran hour and a half, he tookthem through a journeyincluding the maths of thepyramids, binary numbers (and how they powercomputers), the link between square numbersand gravity as well as many amazing maths factsthat helped children see maths in a whole newlight.

It was an exciting time for many of the adultsat the school too who grew up watching JohnnyBall host such programmes as Playschool,Playaway and Think of a Number. They thrilled to

see him inspire a new generation. “The whole school was buzzing with

excitement both before and after the event, andnot just the children – a lot of adults were thrilledto get his autograph!” remarked Helen

Williamson, HeadteacherBillingshurst PrimarySchool.

“When the childrenreturned to ItchingfieldPrimary school, theyasked if they could learnmore about binarynumbers and paraboliccurves,” said SimonSimmons, Headteacher.

“We had a fabuloustime,” enthused a child

from William Penn School.“I learnt that for every job you need maths,”

said Joshua Samain, Shipley Primary School.“All the children came back to school inspired

by Johnny Ball’s knowledge and practicalexamples.” Sam Copus Deputy Headteacher St Mary’s, Pulborough.Bik-Kay Talbot, Chair of Billingshurst PrimarySchool Community Association (BPSCA)

Countryside AllianceAwards! (In 2011 you mayrecall we were the winnerof the Daily Telegraph’sBest Small Shops in BritainAward and also Winner ofCountryside Alliance ‘RuralOscars’ South East.)

The CountrysideAlliance has, in its shortlife, become the majorBritish campaigningorganisation on ruralissues. These are hugelyprestigious awards, wherewe are competing against privatecompanies – not just community shops –so we are really proud and delighted. Andit’s a great testimony to our amazing team:Craig, Dona, Jo, Isy, Christian, Calum andall the volunteers – thank you.

And a humungous thank you to all youlovely people that voted for us, because

that is what first gets us noticed. After you all took the time to vote online or

filled in the petition in the shop, we had to submita written document whichin our case is about theshop, its history, thesocial history of thevillage, what we sell, ourrelationship withsuppliers, and thecommunity involvement. And then at some pointthe secret shopperscame!

Thanks to everyonefor your support in this,it’s a great achievement. We go up to the House

Wisborough Green and Loxwoodresidents ‘rocked up’ for the launch of anew local charity, set up to raise funds

for local children inneed.

The Magic CarpetAppeal’s first eventheld recently inLoxwood Hall, saw twolocal bands: TheGreenbacks and RockDocteurs perform to acapacity audienceraising well over£2,000.

Dr Al, lead singer ofthe Rock Docteurs, said, “What a greatnight for a wonderful cause. Everyone wasready to rock and had their dancing legs on. TheGreenbacks really got the evening off to a flyingstart, and from the first note of our first set, weknew this was all a bit special.”

The Appeal’s first objective is to help a 9-year-old local resident who lives with cerebral palsy. The charity hopes to raise enough funds to buy

her a ‘magic carpet’. These interactive projectionsystems provide an amazing learningexperience through interactive play.

With warmer, sunnier days hopefully on thehorizon, preparing the garden as a place to relaxor entertain ultimately begins closest to the

house, and that means giving the patio or decking a spotof routine maintenance.

If your decking is looking a bit jaded after the winterit’s probably in need of little more than a good clean. This will be particularly apparent if the hardwood boardsare slippery underfoot. The cause is a build-up of dirtand algae becoming entrapped in the microscopic‘pores’ of the timber.

Begin by clearing the decking and use a stiff broom todislodge as much of the surface dirt as you can, particularly from the grooves in the boards. For a basiclow-cost clean, try spraying warm water over the deckingsurface and sprinkling with soda crystals. Leave for acouple of hours while the crystals dissolve beforebrushing off with a stiff brush or deck scrub.

For a deeper clean that will also tackle stains fromspillages such as grease and red wine, rust marks fromgarden furniture, bird droppings and ingrained dirt fromplant pots, you’ll need a dedicated cleaner. Here atAusten’s Home Hardware, Billingshurst you will find arange of products for decking and patio maintenancethat are easy to use and will afford long-lasting protection.

Over time timber loses its natural colour, becoming

bleached by ultra-violet sunlight. Simply cleaning thedecking will not restore or protect the wood, but there isa huge range of deck oils as well as coloured andnatural shade wood stains that can enhance and protectboth deck boards and balustrades.

Patios suffer many similar issues as decking, with theadded problem of weed control. Nothing spoils theappearance of a patio more than weeds and mosssprouting between flagstones or paving blocks. This canbe tackled with a spray-on weed killer. On block-pavedpatios use a dedicated stainless steel bristled patiobrush to rout out stubborn moss and roots.

Though patios may not become as slippery asdecking they can discolour with algae and trodden-in dirtfrom the garden. As well as several proprietary cleaningproducts, one of the best (and easiest) solutions is apressure washer. These are available to suit all budgetsand requirements, but all will make short work of removingseasons of grime from all kinds of natural surfaces.

A few hours spent this spring on reviving your outdoorliving space will make for a better and safer experiencethis summer. So pop in to Austen’s Home Hardwareand see our range of decking and patio maintenanceproducts, and pick up some more useful tips from ourhelpful staff.David Lobley

Dirk Gently’s HolisticDetective Agency –Douglas AdamsWhen Douglas Adams’novel was adapted fortelevision, puristscomplained that theversion shown borelittle resemblance tothe original. That maybe true, but it isperfectly possible toenjoy both.

The ‘detective’element in the title is

not entirely misleading – there is adetective story here, albeit one thatdoesn’t follow any of the usual patterns ofthe genre. As might be expected, Adamsinterweaves humour, science-fiction and astrong sense of the absurd, along withcharacters who are essentially believableand sympathetic, creating a novel which ismuch more than the sum of its parts.

The plot is almost impossible tosummarise. There is a horse stuck in thebathroom of a Cambridge college for astart. An Electric Monk is on the loose. AndSamuel Taylor Coleridge is particularlyimportant. Early in the story, electronicsentrepreneur, Gordon Way, finds himselfunexpectedly murdered and refuses to acceptthat death is indeed the end. His employee,Richard MacDuff, soon finds that the sofa stuckhalfway up the staircase to his flat is the leastof his problems – not least when his olduniversity acquaintance, Dirk Gently, telephones him unexpectedly as he is in the

middle of breaking into his girlfriend's flat…What follows is often complex, mostly

impossible, but always funny. If nothing else, itwill make you think about time in a completelydifferent way.

Winnie’s Dinosaur Day – Valerie Thomasand Korky PaulIt is easy to see how Winnie the Witch hasbecome such a favourite character for youngreaders everywhere. This is her thirteenthouting and, as always, things don’t go totally toplan. Accompanied by her faithful cat, Wilbur,Winnie loves to visit the museum. Not only arethere buttons to press and levers to pull, there

are dinosaurs! Not realones sadly – just bonesand skeletons. Winniewould love to see a realdinosaur but Wilbur is notso keen. So, when themuseum runs acompetition to draw ormodel a dinosaur, Winnieis determined to win…even if she needs somemagic to help.

Thomas and Paul workas a perfect team to bringWinnie and Wilbur to life.

Valerie’s words are well judged and oftenunderstated, while Paul’s illustrations help todraw the reader in, giving depth and detail tothe whole story.

Winnie may not always get it right, but it isbound to work out in the end – and children willlove returning to the story again and again and again.

April Fools’ Day is celebrated in manycountries on 1st April every year.Sometimes referred to as All Fools’ Day, it

is not a national holiday, but is widely recognisedand celebrated as a day when people playpractical jokes and hoaxes on each other.

In France and Italy, for example, children andadults traditionally tack paper fishes on eachother’s backs as a trick and shout ‘April fish!’ intheir local languages (poisson d’avril! and pesced’aprile! in French and Italian, respectively).

It’s always fun to watch the news on AprilFools’ Day, trying to spot the fake story.Sometimes it’s not that easy!

Here is a reminder of some classic pranksfrom years gone by:

The most memorable has got to be the BBC’s1957 Panorama report on the bumper spaghetticrop. Huge numbers of viewers were fooled bythe footage of Swiss peasants gathering longstrands of pasta from the trees! Check it out onYouTube.

In 1962, Swedish television viewers wereduped into thinking that they could transformtheir black-and-white TV sets into colour bystretching a nylon stocking over the screen.

Australians were confused in 1975 when theywere told they were converting to metric time, with 100 seconds to the minute, 100 minutes tothe hour and 20-hour days.

More recently in 2008, we were stunned tosee a BBC film of Adélie penguins flying acrossthe Antarctic on their way to spend the winter inthe rainforests of South America. This becameone of the most viewed videos on YouTube.

And finally, doyou rememberthe whistlingcarrot? Tescopublished anadvert in 2002publicising thegeneticallymodifiedvegetable. Theadvert said ithad air holes inthe side andthat it whistledwhen it was fullycooked!Alex Brown

Neighbours from HellOnce upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

Lily was sick to death of her neighbours nextdoor. All she wanted to do was rest quietly inthe nursery and look after her new baby, Uno, a

lovely little ram lamb. She loved the nursery. Theother mums and their lambs were close by to chatwith and there was no rain (bliss!) and all the babiesgot on well together. She and Welsh Witch had hadto look after Stroppy Moppy’s two orphan lambswhen she suddenly died one morning. But Lily didn’tmind any of that. All she wanted was peace andquiet. And her neighbours certainly weren’t givingher that!

It wasn’t just the state of their pig-pen, deep inmud. It was them. Humphrey and Dottie were just, well, noisy. In fact they were very, very noisyespecially at night when everyone else was trying to sleep.

It had started soon after Sally had brought theewes up to the shelter for their lambing. Tan Facehad already lambed early and Sally wanted to makesure everyone else was alright because of the wetand the cold.

One night after everyone had arrived, Humphreyand Dottie started. They grunted and snorted. Theybumped and thumped. Humphrey would chaseDottie; Dottie would run away growling at Humphrey.Humphrey would rub his face against her face andshe told him to go away and leave her alone. Hewouldn’t. He gave that girl no peace. They arguedand argued. All though that night and many nightsafter, all that Lily could hear until just before dawnwere bangs, crashes and thumps as each of themtried to get the best position in their ark. And then, just before dawn, they went to sleep and snored andsnored as loud as Nanny. They wouldn’t even wakeup when Bill brought their breakfast.

Just as Lily thought she might give them a piece

of her mind, they changed tactics. Or at leastHumphrey did. At the other end of the pig-pen was asmall ark which the piglets had used the previousyear. Humphrey got his nose under it and heaved. He lifted it with all his strength and the ark slurpedout of the mud and tipped onto its side. He got allexcited and shouted for Dottie to come over. It tooka lot of persuading, with grunts snorts, growls andsqueals. Finally she slopped her way through themud to inspect his handiwork. She seemed to thinkit was adequate because they slept there together inthe sun, and stayed there in the night.

The next day Sally, laughing, gave them somestraw to use and they tossed that around to make acosy bed, even though it was still cold and they wereout in the weather. The tipped over ark stopped thewind though.

Lily breathed a sigh of relief. At last they were alittle further away so she got some peace and quiet. For about a week…

Despite the relative calm Lily still worried aboutwhat would happen if it rained. She didn’t have toolong to wait. As soon as there was the tiniest drop ofrain, Humphrey squelched his way over to the arkand stood at the entrance. He called Dottie to followbut she would not listen. Lily didn’t blame her;Humphrey was such a bossy boar. After plaintivelycalling her and Dottie ignoring him for the morning,he went back to join Dottie in their new bed in theopen.

Lily breathed a sigh of relief. Peace for a bitlonger she thought and looked forward to the daywhen they would be allowed to go out into thepaddock again, away from their neighbours fromhell. Yvonne Fleece

inseparable not only from eachother but also the mud!

Paddock maintenance

With the winter we have just had being oneof the wettest on record it is notsurprising that many horse fields and

paddocks have taken such a battering that theyhave ended up resembling the Somme battlefield. With spring here, now is the time to take them inhand and start to put right the damage.

The first thing to do is to have a proper look atall fencing and gates; the wet ground may haveloosened fence posts making them wobbly creatingweak areas in the fence. Anysuch posts will need to bebanged back in to ensurethey are secure. You mayalso need to replace anywooden rails that havebecome damaged over thewinter months.

Check any fields sheltersas well, they may havedamaged panels or leakingroofs which will need repair.

If you have sufficientgrazing it would be best to move the horses offthe winter grazing so it can start to rest andrecover. Then you can have a good look anddecide what action is needed to get the paddockinto good condition again. If grazing is limited tryto section off the most badly damaged areas withelectric fencing and work on each area in turn torestore it.

Once the ground is dry enough it will need rollingto ensure that the holes created by the horse’shooves on wet ground will be flattened out so thepasture doesn’t dry out rutted and dangerous.Rolling is ideally best carried out around mid-Marchif the ground conditions are right.

Although it goes without saying that watersupply should be checked daily all year roundnow is the time to empty and scrub all troughs, check any pipework for minor leaks and damageand repair as necessary.

Any badly poached areas that have becomebare will need reseeding; in small paddocks it ispossible to do this by hand but for largerpaddocks it may be wise to employ a contractorwith specialist machinery to do the work for you.

You may also want to take soil samples to haveanalysed to see if fertilizer is needed to improveyour grazing.

Harrowing the pasture will help to hook out anyrough and dead grasses and weeds, it will alsoaerate the soil and help to promote healthy grassgrowth.

As spring gives way to summer you need tothink about weed control. Ragwort is the weed inthe forefront of most horse owners’ minds and thisshould be pulled and burnt. If there is a largeamount the weed may be sprayed with a suitableherbicide but horses must be removed from thepasture in accordance with the manufacturer’sinstructions. All dead ragwort must also bethoroughly removed from the pasture as it

becomes more palatableonce dry. Docks and thistlesare also invasive weeds andneed to be controlledotherwise they can take overthe pasture and leave verylittle grass; these too can becontrolled with a goodbroadleaf herbicide.

Removal of muck isanother important job insummer, more so in small oroverstocked pasture. As wellas making the paddocks looknicer, muck removal will aid

in the control of the worm population. Horses arefussy grazers and will not eat from areas wherethey toilet so eventually you will end up with manyvery dirty areas surrounded by long rough grassand other areas that are over-grazed.

Topping (cutting the grass) is also a part ofgood paddock maintenance. Topping willencourage new, leafy growth. If just left, the grasswill grow up quickly, flower, seed and then die, wilting on the ground and not allowing any newgrowth of grass. Topping prevents this fromhappening and keeps the grass sweet andnutritious for longer. It should be carried outthroughout the summer as required.

As summer turns to autumn, start to think aboutpreparing your paddocks for the winter. Spray anyweeds that may have had a late flush, checkfencing and water supply and if at all possiblecreate a sacrifice paddock for the winter ahead. And keep your fingers crossed it won’t be as wet and miserable as the one we have just had!Jeannette Douglas. SQP, Qualified Horse Adviser. SPR Centre. www.sprcentre.co.uk

Soil, mud, dirt or muck, call it what you will, but is yours any good and can you dig it?

One of the most common ‘moans’ I getfrom gardeners is that “my soil is rubbish”. We’llpresume they mean it’s not great quality (andnot that it’s full of litter), but I’m never quite surewhat people expect from their soil. Probably asoft, stone-free, sifted loam or maybe a dark, rich organiccompost such asthat found in agrowbag. Thereality is that soil, like man, is neverperfect. Sometimestoo wet, toosquidgy, toocrumbly, or too firm, and, just likehumans, the perfectsoil takes hard workto maintain. Now, Irealise that somepeople were justborn perfect, just assome loamy soils are too. But if you’re not oneof the lucky ones, and your soil is more armpitthan Brad Pitt, here’s what to do about it…

Like all things in life, there are extremes. I(being a horticultural extremist) had to go thewhole hog and excavate the clay from myborders, replacing it with 40cm of topsoil, butunless you’re starting a garden from scratch, and have access to a digger, I’d recommendworking with what you already have. I’ve onlyever come across one soil type which I didn’tthink possible to improve due to its shallownature, so we just added soil on top to make it

deeper.Whether you have easy-

to-dig sandy soil or moistureretentive clay, the addition of afew ingredients will help create abeautiful growing medium. If you are anovice gardener it’s simple, just add well-rotted (not smelly) manure, weed-free and

lots of it. For thosewith clay soil, andmore stamina, addhorticultural grit to thesoil and dig in well, then dig in manureand top off with a5cm layer of manureto act as mulch. Andfor those who reallycan’t be botheredwith digging, just adda layer of manure tothe soil surface afterfeeding with apelleted fertilizer. It’snot ideal, but the

worms will drag it down into the soil, and it’smuch better than nothing at all.

You’ll also have more success in the future ifyou choose the right types of plants for yoursoil’s pH. Testing kits are available online and ingarden centres. If you want to grow acid lovingplants in a strongly alkaline soil, you can try theaddition of sulphur chips, coffee grinds, pinebased composts, or planting in tubs ofericaceous compost, but failing that, my adviceis to move house!Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.netPhoto: Nate Swart

Our January-born Saddleback piglets arenow huge and adapting to life withoutmum. Apart from a few

we are keeping to show theyhave all been sold and all thelitters have been mixed togetherso they will all be best friends bythe time of sale. We keep themfor at least two weeks afterweaning to make sure all is welland they’re eating and drinkingproperly. The potential showones have been ear-notched sowe know who is who and don’tsell them by accident. We had to wait to put thesows back to the boar until 8th March as webreed to the showing calendar, but I hate puttingthem back too soon anyway, feels a bit factory!

We have another couple of Saddleback sowsdue, so tiny trotters will be upon us once again. We had to make another tough decision thismonth on Hubby’s favourite sow, Spot. Shehadn’t had a litter for 18 months and althoughshe was conceiving according to our ultrasoundscanner she kept slipping the litter, so we made

the reluctant decision to send her to cull.Sally our Middle-white gave birth to nine cute

piglets. Sadly she squashedtwo but the remaining sevenare getting quite podgy now sowe know she has good milk. They are such time-wastersand we can all too easilyspend an hour just watchingthem do not much! We havealso been experimenting withcharcuterie with a local chapusing our rare breed meat. Ihave been quite excited trying

our delicious chorizo, salami, pancetta, andParma-style ham. It is quite expensive to havemade but it does give people a real alternative tothe low-welfare products currently available.

Our flock of sheep were very obliging and onlystarted to lamb once we had some vacantstables, how lucky was that? Considering ourram lives with them all year round it could havebeen at any time. Housing crisis diverted.Michaela Giles www.tedfoldcottagefarm.co.uk

John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruit farmmanager in Kirdford who enjoys scribbling aboutlife on the farm from the now to days gone by.

It is with great sadness that I wish to discusswith you good folk the demise of one ofnature’s great wonders, a delight to bring a

smile to anyone of a certain age… the cream offthe top of the milk bottle.

Remember it? A thick yellow line marking theseparation of the milk’s fats from the whey. On aChannel Island Gold Top it could be a good thirdof the bottle that boasted the rich offering. Openthe bottle and turn it upside down and thecontents would refuse toleave unless encouragedby a blow to the base likea ketchup bottle.

Spooned over yourcornflakes it was a gift ofnature to those who likethe taste of sublimeluxury.

As a child the bottlewould usually be shakenhard so that all the familycould share the bounty…but let it settle and onceagain the lighter creamwould float to the surface. Collect a couple ofbottle tops’ worth and you could even shake yourown butter into existence.

Not anymore. Now we have pasteurisation, heating to kill all

pathogens, and homogenisation, blasting theliquid through small outlets to emulsify the fats sothey cannot settle out, resulting in a whiter liquidthat has a much longer shelf life.

Drink milk straight from the cow? Yuk! All thosegerms and diseases. Back in the days of hand-milking it was quite amazing how much ‘otherstuff’ could descend into the milking bucket asyou nestled into the cow’s warm flank. Hair fromthe cow, naturally. The odd flake of mud that hadstuck to her coat, of course. And the occasionalflick from her tail would deposit its own share tothe foaming contents. The farm’s cats wouldcongregate at your feet and await a quick squirtof the warm liquid and then spend a pleasant halfhour washing the sticky liquid from their furwhere it had missed their open mouths.

Sometimes, if the beast was a particularlyfeisty old girl, her rear hoof could be foundstanding in the bucket as well, this the finishingresult of a sly swipe at the milker with her fetlock. It was amazing how often this happened near theend of milking when the bucket was at its fullest.

This called for careful removal before the bucketand its contents were sent cascading down theshed’s length. If removal was successful thecontents would still find its way to the dairy.Waste not, want not.

Then it was strained through a large filter andpoured over the cooler and into the churn. If thedairy was really ‘modern’ there could be an ‘inchurn cooler’ that would rotate iced water throughpipes that slowly rotated inside the standingchurns.

It was at this point that on a hot summer daywe would most enjoy the bounty of the cows’efforts – a large glass of this ice cold largess

would be downed inone and then afurther glass sippedas the sounds of thedairy clanged aroundour ears.

It was hard workobtaining this bounty. There were 30 oddmilkers and onlythree of us to do thework. Each of us hadone day off a week,so that often meant15 cows each to milk

twice a day. Start of the day was at 6.30am andthe close of the day would be around 5.30pmalthough in winter when the stock was kepthoused, one of us would have a last look aroundat 10pm to make sure all was well. That’sproviding there was no calving in progress, whenit could be an all-night job.

In the winter, snuggled into the cow’s warmbody, the job was a delight, although the fact thatwe spent many hours each day with our legstightly bent holding the bucket still and thethreatening leg at bay often led to severe calfcramp in the middle of the night. This was usuallycured by hopping round the bedroom mutteringassorted and colourful profanities in loud tones. Askill that I still use to this day by the way.

So how did I survive. Why am I not removedfrom this mortal coil? Luck, or just a cast ironconstitution? (They used to say we had to eat apeck of dirt to stay healthy.) Whatever thereason, I still remember those days, and thetastes that seem now to be lacking from so manyeveryday foods.

Perhaps it’s old age, taste buds shot to hell, who knows, but I still do miss that cream off thetop of the bottle… So there!John Nash

Southern Water has installed a water supply in the newly-created Station Road Gardens in Billingshurst. The gardens,on the site of former sports fields, is in the process of beingtransformed into a community space by volunteers.

Winding paths, a stream crossed by bridges, a vegetableplot and plants are among the ambitious plans for the openspace, along with a play area, ball court and youth shelter.

The water supply help came from Southern Water’sCommunity Chest grants scheme which supports charities andgood causes with donations towards projects.

Keith Brown, Chairman of the Friends of Station RoadGardens volunteers, said, “We applied to Southern Water forsome help with the water supply and the company installed aconnection, meter and tap for free. We made a donation to theWaterAid charity, which Southern Water supports, in return.

“We are incredibly grateful to Southern Water for its support. As a charity we rely on donations and with a plot as big as wehave, we’ll certainly need some water.”

Sustainability is high on the agenda at Station Road, withKeith planning on installing a rainwater harvesting system onthe roofs of the garden’s buildings.

Kevin Buck, who co-ordinates the Community Chestprogramme, said, “Creating a community garden is not easy, especially on the huge scale of the plans in Billingshurst so weare delighted to be able to help. It’s encouraging to hear thatthe garden will also make use of rainwater harvesting too asit’s the best way to conserve water and put our often wetBritish weather to good use all year round.”

The Friends are still looking for donations and support. Please email [email protected]

I’ve never been a keen gardener, suffice to say that Iam prepared to mow the lawn, remove weeds andprune where necessary. I formerly grew vegetables

and had ‘growbags’ full of tomatoesarrayed along the rear of the house tocatch the afternoon sun – Mrs M hadbecome adept at making the mostdelicious chutney of which only a smallnumber of jars of the 2011 vintage remain.2012 was an agricultural washout for thefamily and I can’t blame the poor summer!

The lawn was the first to suffer as Laikabegan to recognise that this was a moresuitable place to do ‘her business’ than thetiled and carpeted floors of our home. Ihadn’t considered the impact of dog peeon my turf and in no time at all, theluxuriant, fine-textured expanse of grassappeared to have been subjected to an Agent Orangeattack as brown dried scars began to predominate.Apparently, it’s all down to the high concentration ofnitrogen in the urine and the fact that bitches tend tourinate in one spot whereas dogs mark many spots, clearly at a higher level!

Of course, it is necessary to exploit the wide openspaces of West Sussex and the verdant margins ofour roads for the general purpose of toiletingassuming you are armed with poo bags and ready to‘Bag it, Tie it and Bin it’. The early morning rush-hour

for motorists is nothing compared to the frenzied, urgent movement of dogs and owners to some grassypatch ‘that is forever England’. Dog walkers almost

collide with each other as they seek tonegotiate the highways and by-ways for‘traffic-free’ dog-waste bins before thehumdrum business of work.

But naturally gardens become the toiletrepository and therein lies the problem – anice garden or dogs, never both! When Laikawasn’t carting 25kg bags of soil conditioner, ericaceous compost and organic farmyardmanure about, she would be engaged inlugging the grow bags to the nether parts ofthe garden or extracting our Dwarf FrenchBean Tendergreen and CourgetteGreenbush seedlings from the soil.

I tried the various old deterrent trickswith grapefruit peelings, zest of orange, scatterings ofcayenne pepper, and even strategically placedmothballs around the precious veg. I added a dash ofvinegar to her drinking water to dilute the nitrates andtried putting in half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of sodato achieve the same effect. I finally tried addingexpensive lumps of volcanic rock imported fromAustralia called ‘Dog Rocks’ before finally giving up. Atleast I wouldn’t have to put up with the neighbour’s catany longer!Ron Myal

He’s most famous for slaying a dragon, buthow much do we know about St George, the patron saint of England?

For starters, he wasn’t actually English! Born inEastern Turkey in AD 270 to Christian parents,George later moved to Palestine where hebecame a soldier in the Roman army. Hesubsequently rebelledagainst the RomanEmperor for hispersecution of Christians.Imprisonment and torturefollowed, but Georgerefused to denounce hisChristian faith. Enragedat this, the Emperor hadGeorge dragged throughthe streets, andbeheaded him on 23rdApril AD 303.

George’s allegedencounter with thedragon occurred in Libya. The dragon is said tohave built its nest by a

fresh water spring and was offered sheep bytownsfolk to distract him while collecting water. With all the sheep gone, they decided to offer amaiden instead. The lot fell on the poor crownprincess, but at the moment of offering, Georgesupposedly came by on his white stallion, dismounted and slew the beast with his sword.

George is identifiedwith English ideals ofcharity, chivalry andcourage, and thussymbolises the veryessence of ‘Englishness’.

Campaigners arecurrently working to getSt George’s Dayrecognised as a nationalholiday, but for now, it istraditionally celebrated byflying the English flag, wearing a red rose andsinging ‘Jerusalem’ onthe Sunday nearest the23rd April!Debbie Singh-Bhatti

If Windows 8 search and navigation tools stillleave you pining for the regular Start menu, installing ViStart (www.lee-soft.com) will replace

it with something very similar.Download the program and install it, carefully –

it’s free, but the Setup program will install the trialof a commercial Registry cleaner unless youexplicitly tell it otherwise. But once that’s out theway, your old Start button will return in its regularplace, and clicking it (or pressing the Windowskey) will bring back the usual Start menu completewith search box and all the usual menus.

There’s also Start8 from Windowscustomisation veterans Stardock. It providessimilar functionality to ViStart but with a more up-to-date look (www.stardock.com/products/start8).

Windows 8 includes an excellent File Historyfeature, which can regularly and automaticallyback up your libraries, desktop, contacts andfavourites to a second drive (even a USB flashdrive – just connect it, and choose ‘Configure thisdrive for backup using File History’ from themenu).

To set this up, go to Control Panel > Systemand Security > File History. Click Exclude Foldersto help define what you’re saving, AdvancedSettings to choose the backup frequency, Change

Drive to choose the backup destination, and TurnOn to enable the feature with your settings. Onceit’s been running for a while, you can check on thehistory for any file in Explorer by selecting it,choosing the Home tab and clicking History.

If your Windows 8 system seems sluggish, therevamped Task Manager may be able to offersome clues. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to take a look.Click ‘More Details’. The simplified Processes tabthen reveals what’s currently using your CPUtime, RAM, hard drive and network bandwidth.(The more in-depth data available in previousTask Manager versions is now accessible via theDetails tab.) The Performance tab gives you agraphical view of resource use over the last fewseconds, while the App History dialog looks backover days or more to reveal which app is the mostresource-hungry.

Is your boot time slow? Click the new Startuptab to see programs your system is launchingwhen Windows boots. The ‘Startup impact’ nowshows how much of an effect each of these hason your boot time; if you spot high impactprograms you’re sure you don’t need, right-clicking them and selecting ‘Disable’ will ensure they’re not loaded next time.Simon Thomas ([email protected])

Mothering SundayVillage Tweet would like to apologise for an error in lastmonth’s Editorial. Reference was made to MotheringSunday starting in America in 1914 but that should haveread ‘Mother’s Day’. In contrast, ‘Mothering Sunday’ hasbeen in existence for hundreds of years in England, originally being a religious occasion to encourage peopleto ‘Go a Mothering’ – to attend the church where theywere baptized, their Mother Church. Later, youngsterswalking home from church would pick wild flowers as agift for their mothers. The error was noticed after the March issue had gone to

press by which time I could do nothing other than kickmyself! I am also grateful to two readers who subsequentlycontacted me. Grahame Pearson, Editor
