In an emergency, police, fire, and paramedics depend on house num- bers to find someone as quickly as possible. Finding your home or busi- ness - especially at night - can be challenging if address numbers are unreadable, hidden, unlighted or have missing numbers and may delay emergency responders from getting to you as quickly as possible. Are your house numbers visible from the street? Are they set on a background of contrasting color? If your house is hidden from the street, are your numbers attached to a visible fence, mailbox or gate? Is your mobile home identified with your house number? If you live on a corner, does your house number face the street named in your ad- dress? If you've answered "no" to any of these questions, please follow the guidelines below to make sure your house number is easy to read: 1. Numbers must be visible from the street. The numbers need to be at least 3 1/2 inches high. 2. Numbers should be placed on a contrasting background, with a re- flective coating on the numbers for easy visibility at night. 3. Repair or replace aging address number placards, especially on mail- boxes that are a distance from the front of the residence. 4. Prune any bushes, tree limbs or other growth that has covered your house numbers. 5. Numbers should be placed on or beside the front door. If your door is not easily seen from the street, put the numbers on a post, fence or tree at the driveway entrance so they can be clearly seen from the street. 6. If the entrance is more than 50 feet from the street, or cannot be seen from the street, a second set of numbers should also be displayed on the mailbox or on a post at the street or end of drive. The police department is asking residents to walk out in the street and see if your house numbers can be easily seen. Do this at night time as well. If you have any questions, I would be more than willing to suggest possible solutions. If you need to buy or replace your old numbers, you may purchase new numbers at the Village Hall. The State of Wisconsin requires that all own-ers purchase a license each year for each dog(s) over 5 months of age. Failure to license a dog could subject you to additional fines or fees. Dog Licenses are available at the Village Of-fice year round for residents of the Village of Trempealeau. If you live outside the Village, you will need to contact your municipal treas-urer for a dog license. The annual license will cost $8 for unaltered dogs, $3 if the animal has been neutered or spayed. A current rabies certificate is needed which should include the owner’s name and ad-dress, dog’s name, breed and color of the dog and the sex of the dog & if it has been al-tered. Licenses purchased after March 31st, 2012 will also incur a $5 late fee (unless first time licensing the animal). Licenses are available for purchase at the Village Office during regular hours (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm) or may be purchased through the mail with the inclusion of fee, rabies certificate and stamped ad-dressed envelope for us to return the tag and license to you.
