Garden Party David Hartley writes…
The annual garden party was held at Bar and Mike Saville's home this year on June 18th
one of the hottest days of the year! We enjoyed wonderful music from the Shepherd
brass band again as well as the beautiful gardens.
Many thanks to everyone who helped with organising and running the various stalls and
events. One of the highlights for me was the dog dash with a lovely labrador running
completely the wrong way into some bushes!
We raised over £1800 for the church after all expenses were deducted. Thank you all.

cakes! Donations of baking always very welcome and all for
charity. We have just supported St. Leonard's Hospice, Martin
House Children's Hospice and York Against Cancer for the mobile
chemotherapy unit they are fundraising for. This brings the
amount we have sent to local charities to about £3000 since we
started the coffee mornings in 2013. Thank you to everyone and looking forward
to seeing you at the following dates:-.Everyone welcome from 10.00am to noon.

Christmas Shoeboxes Margaret North writes…
Once again it is the time of year to ask if you would fill a shoebox as a Christmas gift for a needy child. These boxes are sent all over the world and bring real pleasure to the poorest children. Often it is the only gift that they receive. If you would prefer to give a donation you can contact me on 789366 and a box can be filled on your behalf. I will be collecting the boxes until the end of October. Please help if you can.

It is with great sorrow that we lost a fellow member, Beryl Ashford, last month. Beryl had been a member for more than 30 years and a one-time President of our Institute and an excellent member of the quiz team. She will be sadly missed by us all.
Members have enjoyed some excellent speakers not least Jean Harrod who was inspirational. We have enjoyed ‘The Science of the Cream Tea’ at Scampston Walled Garden, a visit to the Yorkshire Lavender and a lunch at Downe Arms, Wykeham.

Italy with many more family attending. The organist was Derek Peacock.
Funeral - taken by the Revd Geoff Mumford Ann Manning reports… There was a full church for the service to celebrate the memory and life of Beryl
Ashford. Beryl spent most of her married life in Askham Bryan where she was involved
with many village organizations. When she became ill in April she moved south to live
with her son's family where she sadly died on July 13th. John Warburton played the
organ and also accompanied Phaedra and Emily-Jane Ashford who sang 'Pie Jesu'
Requiem. After the service those who attended were invited to a reception in the Village
Hall prepared by the WI. A Collection of ££494 was divided between Askham Bryan
Church and the Sue Ryder Foundation.
A Word from Our Vicar
Dear Friends,
September always seems to mark the beginning of a new year. This is probably due to
the beginning of the new school year, which generally is when so many folk return from
holidays. However, there are many ‘new’ years. The tax year begins on 6th April; the
Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is this year sun down on 20th September; the Western
Christian Church uses the beginning of the Feast of Advent – this year that falls on 3rd
December; our birthdays also mark the beginning of our own new year. However, the
most notable date would appear to be 1st January.
A date as such should not make a huge difference. It is really only a false marker in the
ongoing cycle of life: Useful in so many ways but quite arbitrary in others. I have also
often heard the phrase, ‘tomorrow is another day’. How true that is, but also how easily
we tend to miss it.
Every day gives us a chance to start over – to begin with a clean sheet. I honestly believe
that is the best way to live life. Don’t hold anything over from the previous day. Don’t
put off anything which can be done today for tomorrow. It is simply not worth it. I
have been particularly struck in recent months as to how quickly things can change.
None of us can really know what tomorrow may bring. I believe it is important to make
the most of every day and ensure that our relationships, our friendships are always kept
in good order through the willingness to forgive and move on.
I pray that we will all be open to focus on what is important today – leave yesterday
behind and let tomorrow wait until we get there.
With prayers,
Geoff

We welcomed the Clerks from All Saints, a liturgical chamber choir who
like to sing traditional Evensong at Churches without a choir, to St Nicholas in June. The congregation of over 20 all agreed it greatly added to the service with sung psalms and responses as well as anthems. We hope to invite them back again. An advance date for your diaries:
Sunday 25th March 2018
We play host to Garth Hewitt, who has been an internationally renowned singer songwriter for over 40 years. He founded the Greenbelt Christian Festival and the human rights charity Amos Trust. He is a gospel singer with a major commitment to social justice. There will be a concert in the evening and a chance to meet him and find about his work.
Please note that due to reduce interest both the Prayer First and
Christianity Explored meetings will cease until further notice.
