Welcome to the May issue of Village News Magazine. This is avery special month. First and foremost, we celebrate Mother's Day -- something important that we should bedoing all year long; but this May 13th is set aside to celebrateand show our appreciation for our Mom. It goes without saying that without her... there would be no YOU (or me)!

For all the moms living and passed, we celebrate! We thank youfor your guidance, encouragement, love and occasionally a swift kick in our backsidesto get us back on track. My mom used to say (when angry), "I don't like you verymuch right now, but I always love you." In my family, we had a saying, "Always theLove." I have passed that down to my own family, and my wife and children use thissaying today. It means that no matter your circumstance -- loss of a job, downturn inyour finances, something didn't go the way you thought -- no matter the problem, there is "Always the Love." Try to remember that, the next time something doesn't goyour way. It will bring a smile to your face. Thanks, Mom, and Happy Mother's Day!

May begins our ninth year in providing you Village News Magazine. Since most newpublications don't make it past their first year, we are truly grateful to our advertisers (and to our readers for supporting those advertisers)! Without everyone'ssupport, there could be no Village News! The people listed to the right on this pageare mostly responsible for our continued success. They keep us looking good and

published on time! They provide the various "Features" each month, and keep our Company computers running at full speed! We also want to

thank those contributors who send usimportant and interesting articles eachmonth and new information. Everyone atVillage News says "thank you" for a great

nine years! We all look forward to many more years of Village NewsMagazine to come.

Golf Tips Golf Tips Putting Problems? Go Back to the Basics!

“Unbeknownst to Tom, his cart hadbroken down in the dangerous,

non-member part of The Signature atWest Neck

Augusta National Golf Course

Putts between 4 and 6 feet are ones that we expect to make most ofthe time. But research tells us that touring pros make only about

50-percent of their 6-foot putts, so the average golfer should not get toofrustrated when their percentage is lower. However, with intelligent

practice, we can do something to increase our success rate on this length ofputt.

How to PracticeTake 10 balls and line up a straight putt of about4 feet as I am in the photo above.

It is important to practice a straight putt, becausethen you need only focus on the stroke and noton the break. Obviously, if you miss a straightputt you will know that you made a bad stroke; ifyou miss a breaking putt, you might have madea good stroke but just had the wrong speed. Soit's important to pick a straight putt for this drill.

This year, let's lighten-up andbrighten-up your home!

FEAFEATURETURE

Many decorators recommend color continuity throughout a house, however this doesn't mean using the samecolor scheme in every room. How boring would that be? It does, however, mean a smooth color transition fromone room to the next.

One connecting color will serve to accomplish this. It could be asoft, sage-green shade, robin's egg blue, buttercup yellow or anycolor you like. The key is to use your connecting color in varyingdegrees of intensity from room to room. Sometimes, your main colorin one room would be better used as an accent color in an adjoiningroom. It might be carpeting in one room, walls in another, an occasional chair in a third, or a special element in the drapery fabric in the fourth.

It's also extremely important to add one unexpected, fun splash ofcolor into your basic color scheme. Did you know that when wewalk into any room, our eyes crave visualmovement? And byadding a splash ofcolor -- something unexpected introducedinto your overall colorscheme -- you instantly

add visual interest into your design plan!

Consider a basic color scheme of, say, buttercup yellow, sage greensand warm winter white. Most would find this a calming color

palette and could easily visualize carrying varyingdegrees of intensity of thesecolors from room to room. Butjust think about the awesome impact a splash of color could add! How about the introduction of a warm coral shade into this color scheme. By cleverlyusing this color in accent or accessory pieces and then, moving these coloredaccents strategically around your room, you've immediately created a muchmore pleasing design plan, full of impact and visual interest!

And if you love to rearrange furniture, just think of the possibilities afforded by color continuity from room to room! All your furniture pieces,as well as your accessories, can be easily interchangeable color-wise, roomto room!

I would like the opportunity of sharing your dreams. Together we can makemagic! Please call my office to make an appointment. 575-8574.

No matter the milesbetween you, mom is stillthere.

You were my fairy tale princess,So much larger than life. You were my angel and my witness Through all my painand strife. At times you made me angry,Great words I would proclaimHow someday you'd be sorry. You were the one to blame. But when I needed comforting

You always found the time.Your words were more soothingThan days of childhood sublime. Now the distance holds us apart,The boundaries have no end. I'll hold the memories in myheart.

You're my mother, my bestfriend.

Three tips for extreme home energy savings

Homeowners expect to get a bill from their utility company each month, but opening one for a particularlyexpensive month can be a real shocker. Consider thesehome improvement solutions to take a huge bite out ofyour energy bill:

Tip 1:Tip 1: Assess the roof A radiant barrier, such asEnerflex, reduces heat transfer between your roof andthe attic floor where insulation is typically installed.Enerflex can reflect up to 96 percent of the radiantheat energy from the sun back through your roof, making your attic space, and therefore home, cooler.

Tip 2:Tip 2: Look for leaks. There are various ways to checkfor window and door leaks, from holding a candleflame near the crack and gauging how much the flame

moves to sliding a piece of paper through the openingto see if it catches or tears. If you find a leak, the easiest solution is to add weather-stripping arounddoors and to caulk windows.

Tip 3:Tip 3: Swap the bulbs. Consider this: homes that useEnergy Star-qualified light bulbs use about 75 percentless energy than traditional incandescent bulbs andthey last at least six times longer.

Ingenious gadgets keep smart gardeners playing in the dirt

Gardeners who like things easy, have mobilityissues or get muscle fatigue are always on the look-out for smart gardening gadgets designed to keepthem playing in the dirt.

Make heavy lifting easier –With a nifty labor-saving sling device called Pot Lifter, two peopleworking together can move big bulky items withease. Just slip the sling around the object and lift.

Stop weeds – Preen garden weed preventers cutdown significantly on the onerous task of weedingby stopping new weed seeds from rooting and growing for up to three to four months per application. Now Preen offers a smart battery powered spreader-applicator cap that makes it eveneasier to apply Preen pre-emergent granules atopgarden soil or mulch.

Spare knees while kneeling – Jolly Kneeler is amolded polyurethane knee-rest that is orthopedicallydesigned to support gardeners comfortably whilethey’re on their knees planting, plucking or playing inthe dirt.

Water plants from the porch – AquaCones fromAchla Designs are super easy watering spikes thatattach to plastic bottles. Just flip over and sink thespike into the soil. The water in the upside downbottle slowly drains to the plant roots.

Info From IVY Your Dog and Wildlife

In Virginia Beach, I have to be walked on a leash. It's thelaw here. That means that every dog is supposed to dothis. Whether on the beach, in a park or in your neighbor-hood, I need to be leashed - no exceptions, even if you area Canine Good Citizen, like I am. Why? Several reasons. Not everyone loves dogs. Folks don't want dogs "doingtheir business" in their yards. This is one sure way to getyour neighbor annoyed with you, even if they have a dogof their own! Plus, some folks don't appreciate dogs coming up to them, their kids or other dogs. But, really:this is a safety issue…. for the dog!

We are predatory animals. We like to chase other animals, including wildlife. This can be very dangerous forus. If you are encouraging your dog to chase ducks, squirrels or rabbits, please stop! We can chase animalsacross the street and risk getting hit by a car. We willchase them down the street and out on the golf course, getting disoriented and lost. We actually have foxes, coy-otes and…yes, even bears in Virginia Beach! These ani-mals can seriously injure and even kill us. And smallerwildlife, like ducks, rabbits, or squirrels might have babiesthat really need them. We might not mean to hurt them, but it can happen really fast. If a baby were to lose its

mom, it likely woulddie.

This month, when we celebrate mothers, let'sthink about mothers inthe wild and leave themalone to raise theiryoung. Please, keep your dog leashed at all times whenout and about. Remember: IT'S THE LAW!

NOTE: NOTE: The Backyard Birdwatchers of West Neck willmeet on Monday, May 21 at 2:00pm in the Village Hall. Please join us and bring your spouse, a neighbor, or afriend. TWEET!

On a personal note. I would to give a big WOOF to VillageNews Editor Peter Cousin for allowing me to contribute tothe magazine. Many of you have answered my requests tohelp the Virginia Beach SPCA by donating pet food, toys, and other supplies when my people put a donation box atthe Village Hall. Peter has been serving our community for9 years! Way to go, Peter!

Remember a couple years ago, during the hottestpart of summer, when your air-conditioning unitstopped working; and the heat in the house becameunbearable? Remember how mad you were?

That may not have happened to you... YET; butinvariably, it will become part of your nightmarememories, unless you take action to prevent it.

You go to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned andhopefully to prevent cavities. You take your car infor an oil change to prevent the old oil from doingdamage to the engine. You go to the doctor and get acheck-up to make sure (in advance) that your bodyparts are all in good working- order. So, why wouldn't you do the same for your homes air-conditioning unit?

Statistics in the Heating and Air ConditioningBusiness show that homeowners can save upwardsof 40% in true cost savings with a unit that's performing at optimum capacity. This means everyhose is tight without leaks, that the fan is in goodworking-order, and internal fluids will provide all

the cool air during thewarmest times.

WhitesA seafaring nation, Portugal boasts an array offish-friendly white wines, especially the simple, tart Vinhos Verdes from the north. The warmersouthern region such as Alentejo produce rich-er, more sun-filled white wines, many of whichare full-bodied and structured enough to agewell in your cellar.

What you’ll PayMost Vinhos Verdes cost just $5 to $8. Just besure that they are from the current vintage andhaven’t been languishing on the shelves. A fewmore expensive versions can actually benefitfrom a few years of age, and they are worth theextra few dollars, as are versions made fromAlvarinho, which tend to ask $10 to $20.Whites from other regions sell for $7 to $15.

Best Food PairingsVinho Verde is ideal for steamed clams or mussels or mild fish like whiting, especially ifit’s been deep-fried. Richer Alvarinho-basedVinho Verde is delicious with crab cakes or richfish like monkfish. White wines from otherregions can substitute for Chardonnay: tryexamples with five or more years of age withpork with clams, a unique Portuguese combination.

Recommendations2004 Soalhiro Alvarinho, Vinho Verde:This bracing, stone-dry Alvarinho has the mineral and acid power to cut through the richest seafood dishes, or even the classicPortuguese preparation of pork and clams.

What’s Bugging You?What’s Bugging You?Tidewater is one of the worst places in the country for subterranean

termites. Don't be fooled! You may have termites and not know it for years. By then, major construction problems can cost you thousands of dollars.

We were hired to protect the Village Hall in West Neck a few years ago and havemade sure no "critters" have invaded the property. Recently however, we have heard frommany homeowners in West Neck about swarming termites. "One of those families was mine,"says Village News Editor Peter Cousin. "My wife came home from shopping and told me therewere flying bugs all over the garage. Upon inspection, I thought they looked like flying ants, which I had seen before. I contacted George Davis at Village Hall for a recommendation. He told me to call Keith Lane at United Pest Control. Theyprovide exterminator services for Village Hall. I called, and Keith came out to view the situation. 'TERMITES', he said. Hetold me they were swarming around the area, and I was not the only home to have them. He was very thorough in his inspection and measurement of my property. When finished, he showed me the price, which I thought was reasonable; BUThe also provided me with a large West Neck discount! That made it much more than reasonable!"

"Keith described the procedure they would follow to rid my home of termites, and he offered me a 5-year extended warrantyafter the first year's warranty for just $99. I mean, really? Each year, United Pest Control will come out to inspect; and ifthe termites should return, United Pest Control will make sure they don't stay!"

Next month, we'll show you actual pictures of the work they did at my home. My wife and I give them five stars for serviceand pricing! If you have termite problems or any bug problems, call them at 838-0118. Tell them Village News sent you.

Have you ever hurt yourself, pulled a muscle, sprained an ankle and said, "I just need to giveit time. It will heal." And as the days and even weeks pass, the injury still hurts or hasn'tgiven you the relief you thought it would, by now?

This is a common problem among us humans. Most of us (usually men) think we're a kind ofsuperhero that will heal quickly and without problems. This couldn't be further from thetruth. Proper care for injuries is necessary, in order to ensure a quick and proper healing.

Often, patients will come to me with pains that have not healed and expect that throughChiropractic, they will somehow, magically become well. No, this is a process: The longer youwait for treatment, the longer it will take sometimes to completely heal.

As I attend networking meetings or seminars, I tell people (especially those who have beenin a recent car accident) to have their Chiropractor check it out and adjust them to insurethat their injuries do not become major problems down the road. The saying that I use personally is, "If you're in a wreck... give me your neck!" Cute? Yes, but serious, just thesame.

If you have an injury that is not healing and youwould like some relief, please call my office for anappointment. We offer Village News readers a discount. 486-4772.
