-Paul Bunyan

Swiss Village recently c o m p l e t e d t h e renovation of the old library into a space for a quiet intimate Chapel. As Christians we

understand that we can reach out to God at any time and in anyplace. Yet experientially there are some places that are more conducive to worship. The creation of this chapel is intended to be such a place. Residents gathered in the hall outside the Chapel on February 12th for a dedication and ribbon cutting. Rev. Jerry Flueckiger led a devotional and offered a prayer of commitment. Anna V. Liechty assisted with the ribbon cutting. Thanks also to George Buhler, Dave Bauman,

and Paul Zerby for their contributions of creative workmanship. The Chapel provides residents and families a private space that allows for a more reflective personal experience than a large open area. It is intended to be a place for personal prayer, meditation and devotional reading, but also enough space for small groups. Persons should feel free to close the door if they desire privacy. We trust that God’s Spirit can use this Chapel as a place for healing and hope to all who seek him.

This month we had a packed house for cooking w i t h E s t h e r R a y , only for the residents to find out that Esther Ray had been replaced by the maintenance staff. How could this be good? The m a i n t e n a n c e s t a f f demonstrated how to make Gooey Louie Sandwiches and served them with chips. Everyone loved them. We will see who is cooking next month.

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES — Teri Sank

Can you name t h e o n l y President that did not get married? More on that in a moment. Last month we had m a n y celebrations and fun games. We had a Valentine’s Day party in which we played games like, “Name the Famous couple,” “Unscrambled Hearts,” and many more. We sang many favorite love songs, like “Let me call you sweetheart”. We finished with a special Valentine’s Day treat. We also had a pizza party for all the February birthdays. We had Pizza King Pizza, peaches and red velvet cake. It was yummy!! There was also a celebration for Presidents Day. We learned a little more about each President and their families. Did you know to the answer to the question? It’s President James Buchanan.

February may be the shortest month of the year, but we managed to pack it very full of fun activities. We celebrated Valentine’s Day and President’s Day with food and fun and trivia. Cookies or cherry pie, anyone? Music was a highlight of the month as well. Jane Summer came to play the violin, and the Stuckey Family brought a Saturday afternoon of music for our residents to enjoy. Chester Longenberger and Fred Walker delighted us with programs of even more memory stirring songs. And how we enjoyed the foods… cherry cheesecake, oreo-stuffed chocolate chip cookies, banana splits, plus our monthly McDonald’s luncheon and a flavorful resident-planned special luncheon.

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES — Cole Rupp

The highlight for Blumengarten this month has been the new baby grand piano that is now in the lower Blumengarten area! The residents have truly enjoyed hearing music before meals. We have had several guests come in and play for the residents as well. The piano music quickly gathers a crowd. We continue to have great fun with dominoes and other board games.

We are just past the halfway point in our Winter Wellness Journey. It is entitled “Back Home Again in Indiana.” We have 25 people doing the study of Indiana each week and/or doing some cardiovascular exercise of their choice (walking, biking, Nustepping or swimming). We have also handed out pedometers and many people enjoy seeing how many steps they take in a

day. You can get a lot of steps, just inside the walls of Swiss Village. We celebrated the halfway point with a party and enjoyed some traditional Indiana foods. The menu included hamburgers with “all the fixings”, strawberries and corn on the cob. At the conclusion of our journey all residents participating will be invited to take an actual trip with us.

Our brain is truly amazing. Ever heard the term “use it or lose it”? This statement is scientifically proven to be true when it relates to the brain. It is estimated that the human brain produces 70,000 thoughts on an average day. As we age, our brains produce less

of certain chemicals that help the brain function. You can improve your brain function with games, exercise, good food, and socializing. Making the right choices for your lifestyle can directly influence your brain function today and in the future.

Therapy — Tara Farlow

During their classroom party. The three year old room has been learning about Valentine’s Day. They made heart collages and practiced forming hearts in shaving cream. The 4 & 5’s have spent the month talking about Health and Nutrition. They learned what food is healthy for them and what is not.

including the joy of knowing that you are helping out those in need. Gifts of many sizes can be done on a Charitable Gift Annuity to match your giving interest. If you want to learn more about this option and how it will work for you, please feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to sit down and discuss more specifics. We want to thank everyone who gave to the "Share Some Heart" campaign last month. Through your generous donations we were able to help to support those in need through our Samaritan's Endowment Fund. We truly appreciate all of the support that you provide for the residents here at Swiss Village.

Did you know that there is a way to donate so that you can help residents of Swiss Village, while offering you tax benefits now and for years to come? It’s called a Charitable Gift Annuity and here’s how it works. John & Jane Doe who are 68 years old decide that they would like to give $25,000 to Swiss Village’s Samaritan’s Endowment Fund to help residents in need. Since this is a Charitable Gift Annuity they will be able to take a $5,034 tax deduction which may save them $1,661. They will also get a payout every 6 months of $1,100 for life with over $900 of their payout being tax free for 21 years! The percentage of return you will receive will vary depending on your age. Through this option there are many benefits provided to you,
