Swiss Village
August 2012 • Issue 529
May 31 marked the end of another fiscal year. On this page and the following you will find graphs that visually depict fiscal developments at Swiss Village over the past 44 years. It was last year that Swiss Village opened Westenfeld, a 14 bed rehabilitation unit for short term stays. This is the newest level of care, committed to intensive rehab. Originally this unit was scheduled to open in June, but due to unforeseen delays it was not opened till August. As a result we
experienced a drop in healthcare census that impacted revenues. At the same time we experienced a reduction in our Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates. To adjust to this reality, cost saving initiatives were instituted to reduce expenses. We continue to experience lower than acceptable census in congregate independent-living. A contributing factor is the turbulent economy. However, we believe that the age of the units is also a cause. To improve the
marketability of Zurich & Lucerne Haus renovations are currently underway. These efforts will continue in the months ahead. Plans are to have an open-house event this fall after completing renovations in Lucerne Haus. We continue to work at taking care of our aging buildings. Part of the renovation work scheduled for Zurich Haus includes repairs to the sinking floor created by soil shifting. The foundation and building structure is stable, but the floor has dropped causing interior

wall cracks. Also, this summer the southeast section of Langfeld will receive new carpeting in the corridors causing a bit of inconvenience for a few days. In addition we anticipate small renovation projects along with redecorating to be occurring in several existing areas during the coming year. Again we want to thank the residents, donors and staff for your support during this past fiscal year. Much continues to happen to make Swiss Village a great place to live and work. The Board of Directors, administration and staff are committed to continuing Swiss Village’s tradition of excellence.

The knee is the largest joint in the body. It gives you flexibility and stability for standing, walking, crouching, running, jumping and turning. With so many moving parts in the knee, it is vulnerable to injury. Give your knees a break with these measures: Strengthen leg muscles. Strong quadriceps and hamstring muscles will protect your knees from injury.
Stretch before any workout. Stretch your quadriceps and hamstring muscles before exercising to reduce pressure on your knees.
Maintain a healthy weight. Every step you take places about three times your body weight on your knees.
Wear shoes with proper arch support. Stay away from flip-flops and other shoes that provide poor arch support.
“Another way to extend the life of your natural knees is to choose low-impact activities like swimming, walking, bicycling, golfing and water aerobics.” According to Rober Malinzak, M.D. orthopaedic surgeon. If you already have knee problems, talk with your doctor about receiving physical therapy. Therapy can work with you on exercises that help your knees without increasing the risk
for injury and further damage.

The weather did cool off enough for us to have a picnic lunch outside with the Kinder Haus Daycare children, the M a i n t e n a n c e department and Greg Schmidt from the Kitchen. Steve Sommer and Josh Zimmerman got the table and chairs ready for us to have a place to sit. Several of the ladies helped prepare the homemade potato salad. Peeling the potatoes and chopping the celery and onions just the right size. Randy Reynolds & Paul Zerby helped by grilling up the hamburgers on the grill. Greg helped out with getting everything else from the kitchen outside. The kitchen provided baked beans and watermelon. There were lots of smiles and empty
The sizzling month of July proved to be a challenge for outdoor activities! A few things had to be cancelled due to extreme heat, but we still kept very busy all month, adjusting our plans as necessary when the temperature climbed too high. One highlight of the month was a visit from Judy Dye who came to show us many beautiful quilted projects she has made. A large group of residents enjoyed seeing the lovely pieces, and remembered sewing and crafting that they themselves had done. We had two wonderful afternoons of music with Fred Walker and Chester Longenberger. And, our birthday party was an adventurous time with the summer group of school-age children from Kinder Haus.

One of our residents, Mr. Everett Taylor has joined an elite club! He has been a member of the Mason's for 75 yrs! Now he was not 3 when he joined but to be a member of something, anything for 75 years is an amazing feat! Thank you for your dedication to the Mason's! Willie Luginbill shared her talents and skills with us on baking home made cinnamon rolls! Not the frozen, put in the oven kind but the rising of the dough not once but twice kind! And they tasted amazing! We did decide that everything is better with real butter! This July, like we should be every month, we are thankful for our country and the freedoms we have. So many of our men served in the armed forces and we are so proud of them. Thank you for your dedication! The weather is always a topic of conversation around here and many have been remembering the dust bowls of the 1930's. We are very thankful for the rain we have received!
RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES — Teri Sank
We went to Ivanhoe’s in Upland for lunch one hot day where everyone enjoyed a sandwich and ice cream sundaes. We also ventured during the month to Hobby Lobby, Target Stores and Joann Fabrics. The Edelweiss Men’s Chorus, the Jay Fox Polka Band and Francie Bond, a Gospel singer, entertained us during the month of July. We played inside games such as progressive euchre, floor shuffleboard, cornhole toss and putt putt golf to beat the heat. Rootbeer floats were served one very hot steamy afternoon.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be
comforted.” – Jesus
Our hearts are troubled with the passing of Nick Taylor. It feels a bit like the story when the disciples found themselves in a boat and the rough waters and wind were tossing them up and down and side to side. The disciples were troubled, maybe even fearful. Yet when they invited Jesus to join them in the boat, the seas calmed and they were taken safely home. The Swiss Village family extends our condolences to the Taylor Family. It is our prayer that they will know Jesus’ presence during these days and that indeed they will be comforted by His love.
Swiss Village Residents and Guest enjoyed a special performance of the Jay Fox Polka Band on Friday of Swiss Days. With over 42 years of experience, Jay Fox tours regularly with his Bavarian Band to the Midwest and South. Jay and Patrice Fox regale audiences with the accordion, vocals, yodeling, cowbells, and schuhplatting.

KINDER HAUS BIG WHEEL RACE CHAMPS

All participants received a special treat bag that included coupons for Pizza Hut, East of Chicago Pizza, McDonalds and the White Cottage. The top three winners in each age group received monetary prizes.

Summer is winding down for our school age kids and they will soon be going back to school. Can you believe they start school on August 14th already? They have been having a good time here at Kinder Haus for the summer. They have been responsible for helping water the flowers in the courtyard. They have been tracking the temperature and the amount of water they used each day. One day they used 44 gallons of water! One highlight of

“The exercise program has improved my walking, balance, muscle tone and energy. I like the way the instructors explain the way certain exercises affect certain muscles. It is a good and fun program.” Howard Flueckiger, South Campus Wellness Class Participant
In November 2011, Howard and Eleanor started exercising at least two days a week in the strength and balance 10:15 classes. They were initially assessed. will and testament gives you the opportunity to determine how you r a s s e t s a r e distributed. You can specify how your property is allotted among family members. Just as importantly you can specify charitable not-for-prof it organizations as beneficiaries. Your will provides you an opportunity to leave a gift that will be used to help others! Swiss Village has established the Samaritan’s Endowment to help persons who are in need of care but who do not have the financial means to pay for that care. By designating the Samaritan’s Endowment as a beneficiary in your estate plan, you can help others who are less fortunate. Use your will as an opportunity to help others!
Costly Procrastination
Dying without a will can be very costly. Costly in terms of dollars and also in terms of lost opportunity. When there are no named beneficiaries the government gets to decide how your property is distributed. Did you know that the failure to do good estate planning can result in the government taking a big bite out of your estate? Dying without a will is known as dying intestate. Under intestate succession laws the state determines how your assets will be distributed. If there are no heirs that fit the state’s succession criteria, the assets could become the property of the state. The plans set forth in your last
