M arie Curie Cancer Care is inviting all children aged 3-11 to get their hands dirty this autumn by growing their own daffodils for the charity’s Mini Pots of Care fundraising activity. Mini Pots of Care is a creative and

educational project for schools and groups which teaches children about science and nature, as well as the work of Marie Curie Nurses. The children will plant daffodil bulbs in their own mini pots in the autumn and care for them throughout the winter months, to reflect the work of Marie Curie Nurses, who provide free care to patients with terminal cancer and other illnesses in their own homes. In the spring, children celebrate their daffodils in bloom by holding a Mini Pots of Care Fundraising Day when they have fun painting their pots, fundraising and learning about the work of Marie Curie Cancer Care. Housing Needs Survey in Storrington & Sullington

In the next few weeks, every household in the parish of storrington & sullington will be receiving a Housing Needs survey; short questionnaire designed to assess the housing

needs within the parish. being carried out by Action in Rural sussex, a charity working to address issues affecting rural communities, in partnership with Horsham District Council and storrington & sullington Parish Council, assessing both the need for new housing in the village and residents opinions on where any new housing could be built. New housing could include affordable homes, small market homes for first-time buyers or for residents who wish to downsize, bungalows for the elderly, larger homes for growing families or no new homes at all – tell us what you think we need. The results will help the Parish Council formulate its Neighbourhood Development Plan and shape the long term future of the village. The Parish Council believes that it is better to take an active role in planning our future than sitting back and waiting for development to come to us. If you know of someone who used to live locally, has moved away but would like to return then this survey is also for them as they have a local connection and could therefore be eligible for any housing that may be provided in the future. NuiSANcE cALLiNg

Nuisance calls are not funny; to be on the receiving end of one particularly on an on-going basis is irritating at least and very distressing at

worst. with so many sales calls these days and recorded messages haranguing you, the very last thing you need is an actual person playing some sort of sinister juvenile game! Fortunately there are systems in place for this sort of thing. The local police station in steyning has been advised to give out the following information to anyone experiencing problems of this nature; if you are on the receiving end of this type of call, ring 101 to connect you to a sussex police call advisor who will deal with the matter accordingly. It is always dealt with most seriously once reported. local business woman Debby Holmes experienced a spate of nuisance calls in her work place, but took it in her stride suggesting that they are “clearly just bored with nothing better to do!” Unfortunate for Debby to be singled out in this way but great that she didn’t take it seriously, only as a mere irritation; other people could be more distressed. Problems like this are synonymous to small towns and villages but it is harassment and bullying and need not be tolerated on any level – the police are at hand to help, and it is possible to get numbers barred (even if they are withheld) and depending upon your line or mobile provider offering the facility tracked, so do not feel you have to put up with it!

Cobblestone...changes!

with so many exciting changes going on at Cobblestone walk (remember, I told you they were in the pipeline in our last visit!) I’m sure you

have noticed the new look on the outside of Cobblestone walk, with a clear and comprehensive sign showing you who is where in the walk, the new paint work smartly brings it right up to date and yet still in keeping with the traditional look of steyning town. As we know however its whats on the inside that counts and Cobblestone walk has got it going on…

I had to get behind the scenes and have a chat with the charming Eddie woodward, proprieter of the Cobblestone Tea House and manager of Cobblestone walk .

Eddie is incredibly hard working, driven and passionate about what he does. He feels that the changes and Cobblestone face lift were a long overdue necessity, and I agree, it looks sooo much nicer and much more inviting. steyning as we know is a beautiful and picturesque town with all its obvious charms, something that hasn’t escaped his notice, he loves this town and is so keen for it to receive the notoriety it should receive!

Cobblestone has often been overlooked and dismissed but that’s in the past now. Eddie’s enthusiasm for Cobblestone and steyning is genuinely infectious. He is working very hard to get everyone in the walk to work together as a team to bring in the business and success that such a gem in this historic, charming town deserves, and it shows. I always enjoy talking to Eddie, he is such a positive infl uence and I know that Cobblestone, in his hands will be a fantastic success!

IngredientsMakes 3 x 340g jars

• 32 kg washed peeled vegetables (such as caulifl ower, courgette, radish, green beans, cucumbers, onions and green tomatoes)

• 50g fi ne salt

• 25g cornfl our

• 10g turmeric

• 10g mustard powder

• 10g ground ginger

• ½ tbsp yellow mustard seed

• 1 tsp crushed cumin seed

• 1 tsp crushed coriander seed

• 6ooml cider vinegar

• 300g granulated sugar

• 50g honey

Picallili

To Prepare

1. Cut the vegetables into small bite sized pieces, place

into a colander over a large mixing bowl and sprinkle

over the salt. Mix well and leave covered with a tea

towel for 24 hours. Then rinse the vegetables with cold

water and allow to drain thoroughly.

2. Mix the cornfl our, turmeric, ginger, mustard powder

and seeds, cumin and coriander to a smooth paste

with a little bit of the vinegar. Then bring the rest of

the vinegar to the boil with the sugar and honey. Add

the spicy cornfl our paste to the vinegar and whisk

thoroughly, allow to boil for around 3 to 4 minutes.

3. switch off the heat and gently fold the vegetables into

the sauce. while it is still warm, pack the pickle into

warm sterilised jar (straight out of the dishwasher is

ideal) and seal immediately. leave for at least 6 weeks

before eating, ready for Christmas!

A great way to preserve homegrown veg & use up green tomatoes that haven’t ripened!

what do you think of when you hear the word ’hospice‘? Death, sadness and grief are

some of the emotions usually associated with a hospice. However, Chestnut Tree House near Arundel in west sussex is a place full of fun, laughter and happiness.

The only children’s hospice in sussex, Chestnut Tree House offers specialist palliative care to children and young people suffering from life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses. life-limiting means that the children are not likely to reach adulthood and includes disorders such as muscular dystrophy, spinal Muscular Atrophy, multiple disabilities, cancer and progressive genetic disorders.

The hospice also provides support for the whole family, offering psychological support, care following bereavement, end of life and respite care, and sibling support.

Our skilled nurses and care support workers provide care at the hospice or in the home. Families can stay in the special family accommodation at Chestnut Tree House or leave their children in the capable hands of the Care Team while they take a few days’ break. There are also activity days and outings during the holidays for the children and their siblings. The house has its own hydrotherapy pool, a multi-sensory room, music and computer rooms, and space for art and play therapy. It is a noisy and buzzing environment where the children have a lot of fun, but there are also quiet areas for contemplation and relaxation.

when a child or young person dies, whether at home, at the hospice or in a hospital, families are offered the use of our bereavement suite, stars. There is a cool room where the child can remain for as long as the family wish.

Chestnut Tree House offers families a home from home environment; it is a place of love, understanding and caring a place of fun, laughter, hope, friendship, and, yes, sometimes sadness.

But most of all, Chestnut Tree House is a place for living! There are so many ways for you to get involved and help…

I’ve been to The lanes in Brighton many times; it is one of the oldest parts of the City and reputed to be haunted, but I’ve

never seen a ghost there. with Halloween fast approaching, I felt it was time to fi nd out where they might be lurking. For me, the best way to do this was to hook up with an expert and join a ghost walk of the lanes.

At The Druids Head in Brighton Place, there was clear signage of where the walk commenced and, not needing to book in advance, myself and my pal Julia (you didn’t think I was brave enough to do this on my own did you?!) duly arrived just before the start time, eagerly anticipating our 70 minute adventure.

with our fellow ghost hunters assembled, we looked around wondering who was to lead the tour. we didn’t have to wait long to fi nd out. From the corner of my eye I spotted a chap with a top hat and fl owing cloak striding past the Pump House towards us. silas, our victorian ghost guide had arrived.

with a ring of his bell, he had our undivided attention and his introduction

to the tour began. That evening we were joined by several members of the public and a group of students. There was lots of nervous chatter as we excitedly followed silas towards Brighton Town Hall.

silas (aka Rob) gave us a brief history of the Town Hall and how there came to be a ghost wandering in the cellars below. I had not realised that there were cellars (actually old police cells) under this building, or that it was a museum that was open to the public on certain days.

we then walked to the Old steine where another story of torture and death many hundreds of years ago was relayed to us. Rob told the stories in such a way that, although quite horrifi c at times, you couldn’t help but laugh.

Rob is the owner of ghost walk of the lanes ghost tours. His background is one of acting and teaching. Putting those skills together makes him an ideal guide. He tailors the walk to the audience. For foreign students he adapts his language. For school parties and families he waters down some of the stories and carries treats for the

young. For us oldies, we get the full blown tales!

Rob started the Company four years ago. He had been running a successful ghost Cruise Company in york, but was keen to up sticks and move to Brighton. He researched much of his material prior to his move which meant that when he arrived in Brighton, his tour was almost ready to go. He contacted the Council who were happy for him to run his tours and the rest, as they say, is history.

In the summer months (June to August) the tours run every evening from The Druids Head at 7.30pm. The rest of the year, the tours run from Tuesday through to saturday (same time, same place). The Company also run private walks which can take place on any day at any time. These appeal to larger groups such as children’s parties, hen nights, corporate outings and school trips. The tours have proved so successful that last year Rob was able to employ two other actors.

many locals who were happy to share their stories and knowledge with him. New information is being discovered all the time and with so much to hand, Rob has been able to publish a book on the subject (The ghosts of Brighton lanes by Rob Marks). This is currently being updated as new discoveries are there to be added. I dangle the carrot of Maria Fitzherbert, the Prince Regent and underground tunnels...

Continuing with our walk, we left the Old steine and poor John Robinson to move to Dr Brighton’s and from there to the Northern lights where we raised a glass of ‘Fisherman’s friend’ to the spirit of the old fisherman who is said to haunt the building.

with a warm glow inside, it was off to Black lion street to hear the tale of an amorous ghost who haunted one of the 3 cottages along the twitten. we then moved to Meeting House lane to see the bricked up doorway

which came with a sad sad tale of a lonely nun.

As we intermittently stopped for Rob to enthral us with his tales, we were able not only to immerse ourselves with the ghostly stories but also to admire the architecture of the lanes buildings. Having never really had time to stop and look, I was amazed at the beautiful buildings in this area of Brighton – not all of which are haunted!

Our last stop was just near The Cricketers pub where it is said a man thought to be Jack the Ripper frequented. Then we were off back to the Druids Head for a final tale and warm wishes from Rob that we all sleep well that night...

I have not shared too much information from the tales told as I could never do them as much justice as Rob. There really are some fascinating stories and I will never look at The lanes in the same light again. I can’t wait to take my family and share my new found knowledge. Or let Rob do it for me on another walk!

This month we popped in to meet sayeed at the Moti Mahal, Horsham’s fi nest Indian Restaurant, which opened its doors in september.

The Moti Mahal Indian Restaurant offers guests a fabulous choice of Indian Cuisine ranging from classic and traditional recipes to more contemporary and signature dishes. Using only the fi nest, fresh and authentic ingredients, their menu refl ects the many regions and various cooking styles of India.

As well as dining in the restaurant, customers can also enjoy authentic Indian cuisine at home as the restaurant is becoming recognised as a leading Indian Takeaway in Horsham boasting a rich variety of starters, main dishes, specials and side orders as well as a comprehensive list of set meals, all available for delivery to Horsham and the surrounding area.

A stylish bar for pre-dinner drinks makes this the ideal place for meeting friends, family or colleagues – a spacious car parking area is available for customers to use.

After years of experience in the catering industry, sayeed stands at the head of the restaurant, offering a daring new take on Indian food. He is confi dent on delivering ‘a totally different and unique dining out experience’. “First impressions always last,” says sayeed. “As soon as you come in you’ll experience something different.

“The worst thing in a restaurant is when you’re eating and you can feel someone looking over your shoulder, ready to clear your plates. That’s not how we do it here. we let you enjoy the meal, the succulent fl avours the chefs have worked hard on.”

The team of professional chefs are trained by ‘India’s equivalent of gordon Ramsay’ – Kirthi singh. They’ve designed a bold menu around the ethos of presentation and taste, not quantity. It’s Indian food, but not as we know it!

The King Prawn Delight starter, comes elegantly placed on hand-carved vegetables. It’s a dish bursting with zest, and is just one of a great selection of starters such as garlic Chicken and Junga Pehri Pehri, all reasonably priced.

“The ingredients we use are so important,” continued sayeed. “we don’t use colouring; we’re looking at locally sourced products as well. I want to work with the fi sh shop in Horsham Car fax, to talk about getting in monkfi sh.”

Flavour is powerful, but not overwhelming, and portions are delicately balanced.

“It’s about offering something authentic, and of course, all the traditional favourites will be on offer – all you have to do is ask! But I want to create a menu that is not overcrowded.”

The team have some quirky ideas for additions to the restaurant in the near future which are sure to put it on the local map, these include plans for shisha pipes – designed for smoking fl avoured tobacco. Karaoke Thursdays include a disco after 10pm.

But the key to the Moti Mahal’s success will be the customers says sayeed, “The feedback of our customers is vital. Any improvements we can make, we will, and over time we will have a menu which the customers have tailor made.

“when a customer loves the food, there’s just no better feeling.”

During and after the Paralympics there has been a strong focus on the effects of bullying.

This will no doubt be re-enforced during National Bullying week in November (12-17).

As a practicing Hypnotherapist, I come across the effects of bullying day after day. The effects on children are widely publicised and there is impetus building to make positive changes. I deal with clients of all ages and including senior citizens who still suffer the effects of bullying; decades after they experienced it. Even when discussing the events surrounding it, clients can relive painful emotional experiences, just as they experienced them at the time; particularly if they are re-enforced by events or an over-bearing colleague(s) or family member(s).

There can also be secondary effects, from OCD to confi dence and performance issues. These can severely impair the sufferer’s ability to get the most out of life and in extreme cases, contribute to making life intolerable.

One of the major impacts is on self-esteem. Bullying tends to have the effect of creating the belief that the sufferer is not good or worthy enough. For example, early in my career, I was asked to help a teenager, who had no friends and believed that she wasn’t worthy of having any. This was a girl with no obvious issues. However, during the course of treatment, it became apparent that the root of her problem was connected to the bullying she had experienced between the ages of 14 and 18. I suspect that this had occurred because she was both attractive and intelligent; a combination often envied by peers.

As with other clients, part of the treatment involves helping the client to change her perceptions about herself and those who had bullied her. we were able to remove the self-limiting beliefs that had led to her low self esteem. Added to other ego-strengthening techniques, clients are able to change their perceptions, so that the bullying no longer affects their behaviour and beliefs.

Anger and frustration can also be by-products of bullying. These are treatable by using Hypnotherapy by helping the client respond to events in a calmer and more controlled manner.

My training helps me to avoid making judgements about others, but with the effects that I regularly see, I feel strongly about this topic. Bullying is a scourge and every effort should be made to eradicate it, so that individuals do not have to endure years of misery, thanks to mindless and weak individuals who get their kicks out of picking on weaknesses in others.
