hoRShaM district council, in partnership with horsham Unlimited and many other local partners and organisations, is pleased to

announce the details of the horsham time Well Spent 2013 event programme.

a number of exciting events are planned for the horsham district during 2013 and horsham district council is working with a large number of local business and community partners to both put these together and to benefit from their association. Kicking off the event programme on thursday 24 and Saturday 26 January is New Year, New You, an exciting new beauty, health and wellbeing event in horsham town centre. february wouldn’t be the same without the Rotary charity Pancake Races and Mascots egg & Spoon Races on tuesday 19 february with the annual Microbiz taking place on Saturday 9 March.at the end of March and beginning of april, the popular horsham Piazza italia will once again be heading to horsham over the easter weekend and the Scouts will be holding their hugely popular annual St George’s day Parade in the town on Sunday 21 april.

Local produce and mixed markets, full of a range of local produce and arts and crafts, are also run all year round on thursdays and Saturdays in the carfax in horsham town centre by horsham Markets on behalf of the council.

as the demand for real ale shows no sign of slowing down there will be a record number of beers, nearly 240, on sale at the 23rd Sussex Beer and cider festival which will be open from the 28th february – 2nd March at hove town hall. an excellent selection of ciders, perries, country wines and bottled beers from Britain and abroad will be

available. the downstairs Locale bar will only be selling beers from Sussex breweries. the festival sessions with ticket prices are:-

If the answer is ‘fish’, what is the question? What to eat on a freezing January night in Shoreham, while trying to remember which one’s ant and which one’s dec.

We dropped by the crown and anchor, Shoreham’s best-looking high Street pub, to try our hand at two things – the new fish menu and the return of their quiz night, hosted by local quiz legend Mark Stack.

it’s the most modern-looking pub in a town full of more traditional locals, but it’s a sympathetic job – plenty of dark wood and candlelit corners for hiding away with a book and a pint, while the balcony and huge picture windows at the back are ideal for bigger gangs of diners and drinkers – not to mention great views of the river during the day. You could take mates for a session, treat visitors to a bit of seaside sunshine, or chew the fat with the locals in the upstairs bar.

it’s busy when we visit – but in a good way. if a pub as large as the crown and anchor can be packing them in for dinner on a freezing tuesday night, it’s a good omen for the food, the atmosphere and the service. Massive as it is, the crown and anchor doesn’t lack personality – the pub’s a kind of ramshackle collection of rooms, balconies, bars and views that feels like a gang of smaller pubs have all got together for a night out and are thoroughly enjoying it.

the fish menu is a short, simple list of classics, with a good nod towards local produce. the Sussex Smokie – smoked haddock, wine, cream and herbs baked in breadcrumbs – makes an excellent starter, with plenty of savoury depth and bite. the chowder is a calmer, more

comforting dish, with delicate flavours from mussels and haddock smoothed with cream and potato.

Mains are equally robust – the fish pie is a trawlerman’s portion of smoked fish, generously topped with mashed potato and cheese, with an equally enormous helping of four different veg. if you’re after something that requires less commitment, a poached salmon salad with oriental dressing was satisfyingly healthy, but with the salmon flavour given an extra punch with chilli and lime from the dressing.

the food and answering four rounds of quiz questions took every last intellectual effort we had. But we did it for you.

four rounds, covering celebrity, family fortunes, music, politics and general knowledge – all ably abetted by Mike, and what can only be described as a very detailed PowerPoint presentation. it’s friendly, with plenty of banter, and lots of breaks for a trip to the bar or to scribble food notes and argue that it’s not your fault you said victoria Beckham when you meant halle Berry.

as our chances of winning looked ever more remote, we consoled ourselves with a local cheeseboard and a sticky toffee pudding – both excellent. We watched, in growing disappointment, as our team name fell from the top of the results faster than we could blame each other for not knowing any galaxies beginning with ‘a’ – ending in a semi-respectable 6th place.

No chance of us going home with the quiz wine accumulator – currently standing at 17 bottles. But we went home happy anyway. think you could do better?

i was really rather excited about meeting hannah, founder of the tea Set. i had heard such lovely things

about her and her unique local business that i couldn’t wait to find out more.

With an ever increasing workload and young family to look after, hannah is a busy lady but she kindly found time for a cuppa and chat with me one friday morning.

there were many questions i wanted to ask but didn’t want to get muddled so the logical place to start was at the beginning – how did the idea of the tea Set evolve?

hannah explained that she had always had a love of china tea sets and had begun to collect them as a child. When her own wedding was being planned it felt only natural to use her collection as well as sourcing more items to be able to cater for all the guests. She added to her already impressive collection by scouring car boot sales and charity shops, along with receiving gifts from friends and family.

When her big day was over, she was concerned about the amount of china she now had. it was too much to keep just for her. But then she had an idea – of sharing it with others and thus the idea of the tea Set was born. at the time hannah had 120 tea sets but this has now grown to 300. “i’m full to the brim!” she said happily.

With an arts background and lots of ideas, hannah was keen to offer her customers not just the tea set, but other delights to increase the full vintage tea time experience. She was soon styling events and baking delicious bespoke cakes for each occasion. Waiters and waitresses were on hand to help guests, and they were all decked out in vintage 40’s and 50’s outfits to add to the feel of the day.

Now in her 5th year, hannah’s empire is still growing. She has recently employed Liz who helps her in the office. She has a number of staff to cater at events and she also has one or two extra strings to her bow.

a beautiful ice cream bike is able to be hired to brighten up any event. With a box full of goodies, children and adults alike can buy a cooling ice cream. this works well at summer fetes and fairs as well as brightening up parties and weddings. hog roasts, salads and sandwiches are on offer so functions can be fully catered by hannah and her team. No one goes away hungry!

hannah was keen to stress the informality of the tea Set. the events that she caters lean towards weddings

and parties in barns and marques rather than in town centre hotels. everyone is down to earth and there to ensure people are having a great time. each booking is personal to hannah and a bespoke service is offered.

has done in the past. in addition to weddings and parties, the tea Set has provided cakes for London fashion Week and the Qe2 launch party. they have also worked with Wayne hemmingway at the 1st vintage festival at Goodwood running a pop-up tea Shop.

Roger Walters from Pink floyd is a fan and asked hannah to cater for his son’s wedding. But an unstar-struck hannah didn’t even realise Roger was in a band and, as the guys set up to play, she innocently exclaimed ‘oh – what sort of music do you play?’!

aside from the beautiful vintage catering, hannah also runs Styles Shoots. Scenes are set up on a nearby farm and photographers, established and new, are invited to go and photograph the sets. a whole day is planned for the photographers and it has become an excellent way to network. Scenes that have recently been created include Peter Pan, Jane austin and Burlesque.

any photos used on hannah’s wedding blog have a link to the Photographer’s site. it is a growing business with more and more photographers attending each event.

hannah has also recently ventured into floristry. She has created some beautiful bouquets and displays using seasonal, local flowers. any event can be supplied, and you do not have to be using hannah’s tea sets or catering skills.

how satisfying it must be to have turned a hobby into a business and for that business to be such a success. i applaud hannah and am sure that in the coming years her business ventures will continue to flourish.

having enjoyed chris’s monthly column, on meeting him we had discussed the possibility of my

visiting him for a hypnotherapy session but i had reservations. hypnotherapy is often mistaken for hocus pocus, watch on a chain wielding hypnotists with a menacing look in their eye… it’s not, and i know that for a fact! chris as the hypnotherapist is merely acting as a catalyst to unlock the problem, and re route the way you are thinking. the mind is a very clever and complex machine and if we are bothered by something, the next time we are in that same situation it can conjure up the same feeling you had at the time – the trigger.

chris began our session with a chat about my life so he could make an assessment and we could get to work. When it was time for the treatment i lay back on the chair and relaxed, chris talked me through a relaxation technique which led me to feel as though asleep but i could still hear him, it’s a very extraordinary state of relaxation (not a flicker of being out of control which is another misconception with hypnotherapy.) We then went through

several periods of time in my life and replayed them, which can at times for the patient be an emotional experience as you can be revisiting painful and upsetting situations. i did feel emotional and a little tearful at times, but at the end a great sense of relief and release.

We discussed my timeline, which in session is different for everyone, and the only way i can describe my experience is this – as though all my memories are in a long line of metal filing cabinets, and as recollected i opened the drawer and was as though looking down onto it... in session i made constructive comments to the me back then, in the past and in the situation, and we replayed it. this re routes the experience so that it is no longer a well trodden path of negative emotion. chris also got me to think of a friend, described five things i thought they liked about me, and then affirmed my values of that friend, then we looked at why, if i valued Sarah’s opinion so highly, and she holds my friendship in high esteem, why would i not believe the good qualities in myself that she sees? this was a really good one for me and my self esteem. We really got into the nitty

gritty and rewired thought processes that can be festering in your mind for a long time and genuinely affecting life, the way you think, deal with situations and relationships.

i have come away from my session with handouts to remind me of the eft (emotional freedom technique) self help techniques we used, these can be very helpful in a situation of high anxiety, there is no identified boundary as to what it can be used for, emotional issues or feelings including feelings of pain or when you feel that big ball of worry and distress.

Going to visit chris was a great experience, and i highly recommend him as a practitioner. for me it was slightly emotional and upsetting, yes, but i came away feeling very positive. hypnotherapy is about trust and you must feel able to relax and open up honestly for a positive outcome. there is so much more i could write and share with you both about my experience and hypnotherapy treatments but i haven’t got the space! Please go and see chris for yourself, i did genuinely come out feeling incredibly empowered by Me! the only thing we have to fear is fear itself, it’s true you know.

Becky’s Craft Crochet Headband/Ear warmer!!

FoR THe baNd

Make a chain of 12, this will determine the width of the band so adjust to suit.

Skip 2 and treble into each stitch until the end, turn and repeat until the band is 5cm less the head circumference measured wherever you would like the band to sit.

Finish, cut and leave a long tail to join ends together.

FoR THe FloWeR

Make a chain that is approximately 25cm long for a medium sized flower, as shown in the picture.

Single crochet from the second in the chain all the way to the end.

Chain 3 then turn, skip 2 stitches and sc into third.

*Chain 3, skip 2 stitches and sc into third, repeat from * until you reach the end. If you are left with an odd number just sc into the last stitch, this should have created a series of loops.

Turn and chain 3. Double crochet 3 times into the first loop, then slip stitch into that same loop. This will have created the first petal.

Slip stitch into the next loop, chain 3, double crochet 3 times into the loop, slip stitch. Repeat to the end until you have a row of petals.

Finish, cut and leave a 12 inch tail. Weave the short tail along the bottom edge of the single crochet.

To finish the flower begin rolling up the petal from the end with the long tail, pinching at the single crochet edge and stitching together every so often to secure, leaving the petals free at the top

saturday 9th March 2013 sees karen and Martin celebrate

their 1st anniversary with a Fundraising open day.

Monies raised will go to The Alzheimer’s Society; the leading

support and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. This organisation formed in 1979 aims

to improve the lives of those living with and affected by dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Society now helps support around 30,000 people every week and with growing numbers of

people being diagnosed, Karen and Martin want to help raise money and awareness of this condition.
