From the Gatsby era to the modern-day speakeasy, this month’s holiday issue reflects the glamour, verve and carefree style of individuality; of

femininity with a bit of edge. It’s all featured in the Huntington Hot List for Holiday 2012, which encourages shoppers to “keep it local” by showcasing all the wonderful goodies our beautiful town has to offer.

Featuring the stately backdrops of the Heckscher Museum and the Founders Room at the Paramount Theater, for this issue of Village Connection Spa Adriana's creative team joined with Marshs of Huntington, Francine’s Fashion Boutique and Zachary's Fine Jewelry to show off the very best in beauty and style.

Huntington’s boutiques are where fashionable Long Islanders find the very best in beauty, style and wonderful food. This season the Hot List shows off jewel-tones and neutrals in intricate, luxe fabrics; longer necklaces; and plunging sheer panels in the back of a dress that tease with vivacious drama. Show your gorgeous skin!

Laura wears a long sleeve black Diane Von Furstenberg dress with beautiful detailed back embellished with beading from Marsh's. Her Black Diamond, Diamond, Spinel & Gray Agate Earrings and Diamond Ring are both available at Zachary’s Fine Jewelry

From the Publisher

It’s hard to believe that we’re approaching the holidays and another new year! As we close out 2012, we look back on a year of great strides at Village Connection.

Even through Sandy, out network became stronger as we reached out through local charities and local businesses to help others in need. We are greatful to have such a strong community and group of affiliates, advertisers and readers that continuously grows everyday.

We are excited about new projects, like our website villageconnectionmagazine.com, which allows us great opportunities to help in our efforts to become a portal for our community. Our social network has grown off the charts and we are learning new ways to harness its potential every day.

We’re looking forward to our anniversary issue in January, where we will celebrate and welcome our 13th year of publishing. 13 has always been a lucky number for me, and I am certain that it will hold true with Village Connection. Please take a minute to check out my new website. Keep in mind that it is evolving every day. Sign up for the digital edition and our newsletter so you can be updated about the exciting new programs starting in January. Also, be sure to get a Village Connection Discount Card at local participants. The card is a “reusable coupon” which can be used at multiple local businesses.

I hope you all have Great holiday season! We look forward to another year of sharing with you all that Long Island has to offer.

In the meantime, See you in the Village...

Jim

Jim’s jacket and shirt are both available at Marsh’s.

Gold Coast Girls

Spa Adriana’s new beauty collection, Gold Coast Girls, is beautifully shown by models graciously provided by The Hart

Agency. It’s all about refined, elegant beauty.Hair features longer lengths and sideswept bangs. Grown-out

fringe is beautifully swept to the side. Braids add touchable texture, in succulent violet reds with black cherry lowlights, or auburns with strawberry highlights. Honey blonde with cinnamons added to underneath layers gives a peek-a-boo effect. Thicker, fuller hair is key this season.

Luxurious petal tones grounded by neutrals are the palette for eyes, lips and cheeks. Be playful; enjoy color-saturated lips or richly contoured eyes – or both.

Cat-shaped contouring elongates the eyes, while feminine colors and soft blending keep the look sophisticated.

For roughly 20 years, Sedoni Gallery has been a flourishing fixture of Huntington’s cozy village. The store’s offerings range from the affordable to the more luxurious, with a diverse selection of everything from designer jewelry, home furnishings, baby accessories, handbags, home décor, and even some original artwork. Over the years, the store has grown to develop a warm family feel, with its entire staff having been there for at least a decade.

Owner Leslie Salant regularly travels to trade shows to bring back unique finds from parts all over the country. Almost every item in the shop is American-made or American-designed.

Shoppers will be enchanted by the discovery of all kinds of distinctive merchandise, such as glassware created from recycled beer bottles, Chinese checkers with marbles made from semi-precious stones, gorgeous hand-blown glass, spa-quality bathrobes, handmade botanical candles, funky multi-strand bracelets, and stunning chandelier earrings in shades of aqua and emerald.

There’s plenty of appeal for the men too, who will stumble

upon various gadgets, sports paraphernalia, wristwatches in bold hues, and cufflinks crafted from authentic baseballs, pucks, and even the bright orange seats of the late Shea Stadium. The store’s website offers a sampling of some of the enticing items that can be found in stock.

A perfect idea for the holidays, Sedoni Gallery offers a “Wish List” service, where shoppers can compile a registry of items that earn their attraction, making the gift-scouting process much simpler for friends and family. But those venturing into the store in search of a present for a loved one should be prepared, because they can almost expect to leave with a little something for themselves, too.

Most Americans slack off from their daily workout routine and clean eating around the holidays. Many people gain between 9 and 14 pounds from Thanksgiving through New Years. As a fitness expert I am continuously designing new and creative ways to help my clients stick with their workouts and clean eating program during the holiday season.

The following are tips to help you stay on track: 1. Write down the days and times you workout on your calender and treat it as any other appointment you have that day. 2. The day of a holiday celebration make sure you eat small healthy meals every 4 hours to keep your metabolism high and your

appetite low so when you're at the event you will eat less of the unhealthy foods.

3. Pile your plate with healthy choices and only a small palm-size amount of the unhealthy choices. You will become full and if you eat the unhealthy choice last will feel satisfied with the taste.

4. Drink water all day long and at the event. If you are drinking an alcoholic beverage have a large glass of water before you have another alcoholic beverage. Do this throughout the evening and you will drink half of the amount you would without the water.

5. Keep your holiday outfit sitting out on your dresser. Try it on every few days to see how you feel in it. If you've made poor nutrition choices that day, then it is a good day to try on those clothes as you will probably feel like it doesn’t look as good as it does on days you eat clean and exercise.

6. Write down your fitness goals and re-evaluate them weekly. Even if your goal is to maintain your weight and not gain weight over the holidays, you want to achieve it, and working out and eating well is the answer.

And before I go I want to share some very exciting news with you!! To keep our clients accountable at this time of year, Huntington Fit Body Bootcamp is doing a 12 week Transformation Contest where the winner can win a 43 inch Flat Screen TV. The owner of Village Connection Magazine, Jim Savalli, has agreed to participate in the contest!! Jim and

I have met and discussed his goals and he is officially getting started to achieve optimal health and to get into the best shape of his life. So let’s all wish Jim well as his journey is just beginning. We will keep you posted with stories in the upcoming editions of the magazine each month, with updates on what he is doing and the progress he is making. Be well and happy holidays!

Bob Little is a long-time resident of the Northport area who greatly enjoys delving into the community’s fascinating history and writing his column for the Northport Historical Society.

northport history • bob little

In 1901 the African American community in Northport initiated a movement to secure a place of worship. The officials of the African Methodist Episcopal mission started raising funds with a clambake. They proceeded to bake and book sales and in 1907 organized a concert at the Union Opera House. Unfortunately, their efforts raised only enough funds to buy land on Railroad Avenue (Church Street today) and lay a foundation for the building.

The congregation met at the site each Sunday to hold its services outdoors. The building committee tried several times unsuccessfully to obtain loans for the construction of a church. In 1908, William Codling, a prominent Northport realtor and devoted member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church offered them a loan of $500.

The cornerstone was laid in 1908, and upon the completion of the sanctuary, a day of praise and thanksgiving was held to dedicate this holy ground. The Praise service conducted by Reverend T.F. Sales from New York City began at 10:30 a.m. followed by sermons by preachers from Huntington, Woodbury, and Setauket. At 12:30 p.m. all shared a “love feast” before the dedication itself began at 2:30. Communion followed at 4:30 after which there was more preaching culminating in a prayer meeting at 7 o’clock and a final address at 7:40 by Reverend William Edwards, the pastor of the new church.

The fellowship of the Allen A.M.E. Church formed a friendly,

devoted, but small congregation. One member once noted that the music for services consisted of solos and duets. “If we had a choir,” he said, “there wouldn’t have been anybody in the pews.” This small congregation was not able to support a full time pastor so Reverend Edwards worked as a confidential clerk and stenographer at a law office near his home in Mineola and commuted to Northport on

the weekends. To meet the basic expenses of running the church, the congregation held various fundraisers in the Village. One of the most popular was a chowder sale at Jensen’s Market on Main Street. The upkeep of the building and grounds posed another financial burden. Fortunately, one congregant, Henry Lewis, a retired sailor, took upon himself the care of the church. Through their efforts, the congregation repaid the $500 loan and held a mortgage-burning celebration on May 7, 1922.

The events of the following decades led to many of the younger members of the fellowship moving to new communities. The membership dwindled to a point that the church was dissolved in the early 1960’s. In 1967, the building was sold for use as a private residence. The church building still stands with its exterior unchanged and the cornerstone in place. In 2010, the Town of Huntington placed a marker noting the building’s historic past.

outdoor living • charles h. gamarekian

En plein air, a French expression which means "in the open air", is principally used to describe the act of painting outdoors, which is also called peinture sur le motif ("painting on the ground"). The term is largely associated with the Impressionist artists of the late 1800s, a time when artists began to paint subject matter not normally seen — real people doing real, everyday things — and they came out of their studios into the open air to create their works. Impressionist painters such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir advocated en plein air painting, and much of their work was done outdoors. Unlike any other painting technique, it challenges artists to concentrate completely on the information in front of them.

In my career as a paver manufacturer and industry spokesperson spanning over three decades, I have come to recognize the talents of landscape designers and professional landscape contractors as artists in their own rights. Just as the works of the famous painters of

the 1800s reflected everyday occurrences, the designs of these modern day master craftsmen of outdoor spaces take into consideration the day-to-day lifestyles of their homeowner-customers with driveway and patio designs to full-spectrum outdoor living environments. They incorporate specially conceived color palettes and pattern designs, textures, natural and electrical landscape lighting effects and other ambient considerations along with installation techniques that encompass both natural and architectural surroundings into hardscape masterpieces. It is an open canvas for those who recognize that the creativity is limitless.

Many fine art experts agree that master painter and sculptor Pablo Picasso considered color secondary in his work. His works had more to do with twisting forms and rearranging shapes. Today’s landscape architects and contractors rely on unique patterns in monochromatic and multi-color, patterns. Their creative approaches are often revealed in border and banding treatments and unrestricted, random placements in addition to circle and fan patterns, which all can be integrated into the overall motif. Textures also

play a part in painting techniques and mimicking natural stone in interlocking paver systems. Engaging a contractor to design and build a paver patio, pool deck, walkway or driveway should be done with the same caution as you

would when commissioning a custom painting. Check not only the credentials of the company, but also the brand of pavers the contractor recommends because the quality of the materials used can impact on the long life and sustainable beauty of the final job. Remember that you are about to make a substantial investment that when accomplished correctly can provide a special pride of ownership and actually increase the appraised value of your home.

Hardscape Design, The Art Form

Charles H. Gamarekian is the Chairman/CEO of Cambridge Pavers Inc., manufacturers of Cambridge Pavingstones with ArmorTec®, Cambridge Wallstones and a full line of products for outdoor living. He is one of the founders and a current board

member of the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI). Organized in 1993, ICPI is the North American trade association representing the interlocking concrete paver industry and considered by peer associations around the world as the leader in

development and dissemination of technical information for design professionals and contractors. Mr. Gamarekian is recognized worldwide as an expert in his field and is a frequent speaker on the proper installation of pavingstones, wallstones and many

outdoor living products.

We’ve all seen the mayhem that Christmas trees can cause when not properly secured to your vehicle, but what other mayhem can they cause? If you were one of the many that got their Christmas tree recently, odds are that it’s getting dryer. Here are some important safety precautions to keep you and your family safe throughout the rest of the Holiday Season:

Water it.Logical, we know. However, in the day to day routine, you may not remember to water your Christmas tree. Prolong its life by checking

the water and making sure that you’re not letting your tree dry out.Artificial Tree? Check the box! It’s important that you make sure that if you own an artificial tree, that you check the box for “flame retardant” --- and understand the

difference between that and flame resistance. Fire retardant trees have been chemically treated to resist burning when a flame is present. Check your light cords. The cords holding your Holiday lights together tend to crack and fray over the years. It’s generally recommended that you replace your

tree lights every few years to avoid fire hazards that can be caused by fraying cords. If it’s been a few years since you have replaced your lights, this year may be the year to replace them.

Keep pets away from your tree.Animals are notorious for chewing cords, so it’s particularly important that you keep them away from the tree and make sure that they

are not left unattended to chew or claw cords.Unplug it whenever you leave (or go to bed).As your tree begins to dry out, it’s important that you consider replacing it, trashing it, or at a minimum unplugging it any time you won’t

be around to watch it. The potential consequences that can result from a Christmas tree fire are not worth the risk

Home for the Holidays with Jo-Ann Corretti

Page 51: Village Connection Magazine - December 2012

village connection • december 2012 • 51

Elise Pearlman, an arts and leisure journalist, has been reviewing photography and art exhibits, theater and restaurants for nine years. Her work has appeared in Newsday,

Dan’s Papers and Long Island Pulse Magazine as well as local newspapers. She cre-ates the popular ‘There’s No Place Like Northport’ calendar with her husband. She can

be reached at [email protected].

At this time of year there is a joyous renewal of the human spirit across Long Island, with each town boasting its own unique holiday ambiance. It is precisely this air of enchantment that award-winning artist Jo-Ann Corretti has been capturing in her holiday paintings and Christmas cards for decades.

“I love painting Christmas scenes because they resonate with happiness,” said Jo-Ann who enjoys immortalizing landmarks decked out for the season in Northport, Cold Spring Harbor, East Northport and beyond.

This year Jo-Ann is proudly debuting a new holiday card, and fans will see that she has outdone herself.

“This is the card that people have been asking for,” Jo-Ann said of her panoramic image of Northport at Christmas which brings together beloved elements celebrated in previous work.

“You’ll see the two children with a sled, the village park, Santa, the gazebo, and the snowman,” Jo-Ann said. To add an additional

dash of holiday magic, Jo-Ann will be sprinkling some crystal dust on small holiday prints which are then framed in gold. There’s also a sparkly image of Northport’s architecturally distinctive Main Street that is perfect for gift-giving.

“I will also have framed 8 x 10 inch prints of my 2012 Christmas scene,” said Jo-Ann, who will be exhibiting at the DECA Holiday Craft Fair at Northport High School, 154 Laurel Hill Road, Northport on December 8 and 9 from 10 am to 5 pm. For those who enjoy giving personalized seasonal gifts, Jo-Ann specializes in commissioned pieces, including house portraits. To see more of her work, visit joanncorretti.com.

HUNTINGTON VILLAGE, NY – November 29, 2012 – Huntington Village is humming with shoppers busy gathering gifts for everyone on their holiday lists. The streets are singing, too, with holiday music piped in over speakers strung all along New York Avenue, Main Street and Wall Street, getting everyone into the spirit of the season.

This year, the music will be even richer thanks to a new sound system funded by the Huntington Business Improvement District (BID). Keeping it local, the BID worked with hometown business Wamco Electric as well as resident Mike Guido, who designed and assembled the new sound system.

“The holiday music sets the mood and provides a welcoming, fun atmosphere for everyone in the Village,” said John Vater, who some call “The Music Man of Huntington Village” because he first orchestrated the holiday tunes 28 years ago and still runs it today.

It was 1984 when Vater, co-founder of Aveda lifestyle salon and spa Spa Adriana, shared songs of the season with New York Avenue by pointing music speakers out his studio window. Soon after, Vater and his good friend Jack Paladino, owner of Christophers, strung a pair of speakers across both sides of the street to improve the sound. Huntington Village continues this tradition nearly three decades later.

The music now has a richer, cleaner sound thanks to the updated equipment. The entire system and wiring has been upgraded with new speakers, amplifiers and a mixing board replacing the 12-year-old system. There are plans to add more zones throughout the Village as funding becomes available.

The music is playing from Black Friday until Jan 6th. So sing along with your holiday favorites as you shop the great stores of Huntington Village and keep it local for the holidays!

Elise Pearlman, an arts and leisure journalist, has been reviewing photography and art exhibits, theater and restaurants for nine years. Her work has appeared in Newsday, Dan’s Papers and Long Island Pulse Magazine as well as local newspapers. She creates the popular

‘There’s No Place Like Northport’ calendar with her husband. She can be reached at [email protected].

Snowflakes, each of which boasts a unique lacy crystalline structure, are among nature’s most beautiful and fascinating creations. The wintry waltz of these diminutive flakes transforms familiar surroundings with its startling whiteness, leaving behind dreamy wonderlands. There is a poetry about winter and photographer Rich Iaboni celebrates it with outstanding images. In “Winter’s Kiss,” the roundabout

in Northport Village Park, lightly dusted with snow, becomes the focal point of a vignette reminiscent of a black and white photograph. In “Out on a Whim,” a photograph taken at Fuch’s Pond in Northport, the silvery latticework of ice-encrusted branches of trees, and their

reflection in the water, ignites the imagination. In “Winter’s Filigree,” newly fallen snow transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary, with a gazebo near Northport Harbor’s commercial dock resembling a sugary confection.

Rich, a photographer for all seasons, is known for his vibrantly colored images and tantalizing composition. He will exhibiting at the DECA Holiday Craft Fair, which will be held on Saturday, December 8 and Sunday, December 9 from 10 am to 5 pm at Northport High

School, 154 Laurel Hill Road, Northport. Rich is also currently probing the parameters of high dynamic range photography which is unparalleled in terms of detail and dimensionality. To appreciate the full range of his artistry, visit his booth or go to iaboniphotoimages.com.
