India’s first Maker Faire will be held in Ahmedabad in 2012, with a grant from the Motwani Jadeja Foundation, based in Silicon Valley, USA. Maker Faire Ahmedabad is a two-day family friendly festi-val to celebrate the DIY mindset. As the Indian economy flexes its global muscle, this event provides a platform for designers, engi-neers, artists, scientists, hackers and tinkerers to showcase their work and their expertise. It will also connect these makers to each other and to the international Maker community. The goal is to make visible the projects and ideas we don’t encounter every day and present them in an interactive, show-and-tell format for peo-ple of all ages. With emphasis on sharing rather than selling, this lively learning festival will inspire everyone to become a Maker.

Ahmedabad Mini Maker Faire is independently organized and operated under license from O’Reilly Media, Inc.

AHMEDABAD MINI MAKER FAIRE

AHMEDABADAhmedabad is the largest city in Gujarat -- one of India’s most vibrant states. It has long been known for its beautiful textiles, and more recently, it has served as a technological and educational hub for Western India. Ahmedabad is home to the Gandhi Ashram as well as to the National Institute of Design, the Indian Institute of Management, and the Indian Space Research Organization.

MAKER FAIRE HISTORYIn 2006, Make Magazine & O’Reilly Media created the first Maker Faire in California’s Silicon Valley. The exhibits ranged from paper airplane workshops to interactive fire-breathing sculptures. The fair has now grown to feature 700+ Makers, attracts over 100,000 visi-tors, and has sparked a global Maker movement. Maker Faires have sprung up across the United States and in other countries, including Africa, China and the UK.

Maker Faire Ahmedabad is currently accepting applications for the inaugural event. Like any fair, this event might include traditional forms of making, but it is primarily designed to be forward-looking and exploring new forms and technologies. Below are a few examples (listed in alphabetic order).

• Affordable Design• Biology & Chemistry Projects• Electric or Human Powered Vehicles• Electronics• Future Tech• Green Tech• Kites• Kinetic Sculpture• Music Performance

• Radios• Robotics• Rockets• Shelter (Tents, Domes)• Student Projects• Textile Arts and Crafts• Unique Tools • Vintage Computers• 3D Printers

SEEKING MAKERS

MAKER MOVEMENTThe Maker movement is born out of the belief that “everyone is a maker and our world is what we make it.” It is part of the larger Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset that moves people to re-imagine and recycle objects to create new designs, and thereby inspire innovation. The mission of Maker Faire events is to inform, connect and entertain Makers, and aspiring Makers of all ages and back-grounds through the public gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, hobbyists, science clubs, students, and authors.
