Over the weekend the men’s and women’s basketball team took on the Mount Royal Cougars in front of a gym packed to the roof with their crazy Augustana fan base. The women had an amazing game. At the half the girls were tied only to pull away in the third quarter. The team was led by senior players Kari Kubinec and Taryn Story with 14 and 22 points respectively. Kelsey Lund presented a force to be reckoned with once again and was awarded player for the game for her 27points and 13 rebounds. The women won the game The women now sit 3rd in the North and are getting set for another playoff run. Over the weekend the men’s team recognized a milestone for one of its senior players, David Chytracek. “We were happy to recognize David’s 100th career ACAC game on Saturday.” said Coach Drabiuk. David accepted a commemorative plaque in front of family, friends and his large Augustana fans base. “It was a great accomplishment and the fans gave him a wonderful tribute. “ The men lost a tough contest 106-77, Shayn Bruney was awarded the player of the game for his 23 points and 10 rebounds. :As a team we were disappointed with the result of the game” said coach Drabiuk and hope to improve in the coming weeks in the hopes of staying in the playoff run. The team is currently sitting in 5th in the north.

Members of the Augustana Biathlon team headed east this week to what was initially supposed to be a race in La Patrie Quebec; just south of Montreal. Due to snow complications the race was moved to the site of this years National Championships; in Valcartier Quebec. The team composed of Ryan Burlingame, Joseph Lirette, Aram Alexanian, and Keely MacCulloch headed east to take part in Youth and Junior Trials for the Biathlon World Championships to be held in Kontiolahti, Finland. The team competed well with both Keely and Ryan in the running for qualification. “It came down to the last day of racing. Keely had an awesome last day with a great standing bout of clean shooting. She was also having a good ski; so all in all she put it all together” in some challenging and windy conditions said coach Hans and Joan Skinstad. Keely finished fourth overall on the last day while Ryan finished 7th in the junior categories. Both Aram and Joseph struggled a little on the skis this week but had a great showing in the range. Joseph had a an impressive 80% shooting average for the week. Senior men competitor Kai Skinstad also headed east to compete as he is making his come back from a year of illness. “He is still finding it difficult to race multiple events but showed promise in his shooting this week” said Joan. Keely is the second Augustana junior women to make the Junior World Champion-ship team since head coach Hand Skinstad took over the reigns. Carly Shiel attended the Championships back in 2010. The games will be held in Kontiolahti, Finland from February 20-26, 2012. Congratulations Keely we will be cheering you on!
Balancing the books… Sleep, eat, classes, group projects, studying, team practice, strength training, travel, com-petition, eat, sleep, repeat… Not all days are like this, but our student-athletes, on average, dedicate 21 hours a week to training and performing in their chosen sport. Add in weekend travel to competitions, athletic therapy, and involvement in community initiatives and there is little to no time re-maining to take on part-time jobs to offset the costs of attending university. Financial assistance is crucial to the continuation of the proud tradition of sporting and academic excellence at Augustana. Invest in our athletes and their dreams will become reality. This weekend had the men’s and women’s teams facing a double header versus the Lethbridge Kodiaks. On Friday night the women played well and were able to take a set off the Kodiaks. “The weekend was good, we played well Friday, and showed a ton of promise through some tough games situations and we were able to hang in there. Satur-day was a little tougher, both teams were very tired and it showed, the mental toughness just is just not there yet. The future is starting to look brighter, but we still have a very long way to go said Head Coach Stephen Leggit. On the men’s side they faced a challenging weekend versus the visiting Kodiaks. “The games were hard fought on both days, back and forth for the first 4 games each set, but then Lethbridge took over in the 5th set each day. Both days we stayed with the #11 ranked team in the country, but in the end they had more offensive weapons, and out-played us just enough to win the fifth sets.” said Head Coach Tom Tigchelaar. The Men hope to keep their playoff hopes alive with games this weekend versus Red Deer Col-lege. Come cheer on the teams on Friday night with the women at 6:00 and the men starting after at approximately at 7:30PM in the Augustana Gymnasium.

Why did you choose to attend Augustana?
What has been your best moment playing for the Vikings?
Do you have any rituals or superstitions?
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
What are you looking to accomplish in your time at Augustana?
Who has been your biggest influence in your life thus far?
What has been the biggest accomplishment in sport?
What is the best advice you were ever given?
What is your favourite type of music/band?
What is your favourite food to eat before a game?
I chose to come to Augustana as I am from a small community just outside of Camrose, so family and friends were still close.
Also, because it is a smaller campus I felt that I would easily be able to establish a new set of friends, and a new family with my
basketball team.
I would have to say my mother, Corinne. She has been the biggest supporter throughout my journey as a student, athlete, and
as a daughter. She taught me many life lessons and I could not have been where I am without her. Mom, if you are reading
this, I love you!
In my second year, which was last year, we made it into playoffs! It was a tough battle against the Sait Trojans, where we took
it to a three game series. I have never felt more proud as an individual and as a teammate.
I can’t really pick a certain piece of advice as there are multiple pieces to my puzzle. I would say that I learned that when I felt
that I was being critiqued, it was only because I had potential. If your coach, or anyone for that matter, doesn’t say anything,
that’s when you worry.
The best moment would be this January having been able to go to Cuba for the cultural sport exchange. It was such a great
experience that I will cherish forever.
No rituals, but I do have superstitions about the way I wear my hair. Ponytail means business, otherwise I feel like I won’t do
well :P
Well, this year I want to again make playoffs! The games coming up are going to be intense and if we can
stick to the game plan and bring that lockdown D, I’m positive we will succeed.
I love all music really, but my all-time favourites are John Mayer and Enrique. If you ever have tickets to any
concert of theirs, you know who to call.
I LOVE SUSHI! I know it may not be the best thing, but literally I will eat it before and after a game. If
Sobey’s does not have any left, that is when I will resort to spaghetti or a sandwich.
I draw inspiration from my teammates, coaches and my sisters. I am continually motivated by their actions
and each of their differences make me a better person, on and off the court.

Wow, what a crazy weekend. Home games for every team, a concert afterwards, and people all over the place. Despite some tough losses for vol-leyball and men's basketball, it was a memorable time. Here are what were some of the highlights for me. I still get blown away by the fan support every weekend. From students, family, friends, other athletes, and the rest of the community every night they
give our teams an edge during competition. A highlight of that fan support was Dave Shantz and Lee Danderfer donning some boxing gear to get the crowd going during the Friday volleyball
matches. Naz, Adam and Tom from the volleyball team returned the favor the next night during the basketball games against Mount Royal. Great stuff. A congrats is in order to the girls basketball team for taking down the natioanlly ranked Mount Royal Cougars. One of the most exciting girls basketball
games I, and I am sure others, have had the pleasure to watch. Also, nice work hockey team, they now sit third in in the conference with a pair of blowout victories over Briercrest and are looking good in their hunt for the championship.
During both basketball games, the Cougars were clearly not prepared to play in a building like given the way they handled the crowd's participation. Very different environment than their home gym, you have to run over 30 feet out of bounds to find a fan there.
While myself and other volleyball members are still smarting somewhat from the defeats that occurred over the weekend, it is still refreshing to know that we are able to compete against whoever comes into town, a far cry from last year when we struggled to win a set let alone. This next weekend will be another good test.
Despite many great feats of athleticism performed over the weekend the biggest cheer went out to a small girl that took a lap across the court during a time stoppage in the men's basketball game. Even the grumpiest curmudgeon must have cracked a smile.
On a side note. All Star weekend in Ottawa for the National Hockey League. When the skills competition was on I tuned in briefly to watch, but found myself pretty uninterested. The effect was doubled for the actual game the following day. Seeing college athletes compete hard is much more enter-taining than watching professional athletes go through the motions.
Thanks for everyone that came out for the weekend and making it memorable.
