Viking Dry ESFR Sprinklers

• Install on wet systems only

• 14.0 (201) K factor

• Single barrel length (36 inch / 0,9 m)

• Offered with a standard 2 inch

(50 mm) grooved connection (grooved coupling not included)

• 1-1/2 inch NPT (40 mm BSP)

Overview –

Viking Dry ESFR Sprinklers

• Each dry ESFR sprinkler

includes two insulating boot

assemblies, one for each side

of ceiling penetration

– Split rubber design allows for boot

to be placed around barrel after

sprinkler installation (slide up and

down barrel flat against ceiling)

– Two halves of metal cover push

together to form seal cover

– Align holes and thread fastening

screws into insulated ceiling

(fasteners are provided)

Design and Installation Criteria

• Same installation criteria and obstruction

• These requirements could increase the installed cost of a traditional protection

scheme, compared to Viking’s dry ESFR sprinklers, by more than 50%

• FM requirements for galvanized schedule 40 pipe in the freezer ceiling sprinkler

system and in-rack sprinkler system will make the cost differential even larger

Service and Maintenance

Considerations

The simplicity of a wet pipe system also lessens the

overall service and maintenance requirements,

lowering the total lifecycle costs for facility owners

Compared to a dry or preaction system …

• No air compressor maintenance required

• No drum drip testing, inspection, and maintenance

• No detection system testing and maintenance

• No valve enclosure and low temperature alarm to inspect

• No quick opening device to test

• No auxiliary drain maintenance

• No need to keep records of trip times and full-flow tests

• No additional strainers, filters, and restricted orifices to inspect

Repair Cost

Considerations

Wet Systems:

1) Replace activated sprinkler heads

2) Clean-up damaged product

Dry and Preaction Systems:

1) Replace all sprinkler heads in system

2) Replace all broken pipe and fittings

3) Remove all system piping from freezer, thaw and reinstall

4) Replace and repair damaged detection system components

5) Inspect, repair, and test air supply system

6) Clean-up damaged product

Summary

• Viking’s dry ESFR sprinklers enable freezers

and cold storage facilities to be protected at a

significantly lower cost than in the past

• Dry ESFR sprinklers must be installed from a

wet pipe system installed in a heated space (“box-in-a-box” construction)

– Industries include food distribution, food

processing, pharmaceuticals, and storage of

certain composite materials

Summary

• Dry ESFR sprinklers provide ease of

maintenance for end users and a lower total

lifecycle cost for their fire protection systems

• Design and installation rules are the same as a

typical K14 ESFR
