Why is such an evil number associated with an inno- cent holiday about candy and cheap scares? To solve this mys- tery, it may be best to look into the origins and true meaning of Halloween. Halloween was first recorded in 43 A.D. by the Celts, who celebrat- ed their new year on November 1st. Samhain, what would later be known as Halloween, was cele- brated on October 31st. Costumes were worn to ward off any linger- ing spirits. If a spirit saw someone’s face, they would follow them until the next new year. Lat- er, in the eighth century, Pope Gregory III declared November 1st as a day to honor all saints and martyrs. The day became known as All Saint’s Day, while the day before was declared All Hallow’s Eve, a day with the same traditions as Samhain. This day slowly evolved into what we now know as Halloween, becoming more child friendly with treats and games as the years passed. How does 666 play into this? In Revelations, 666 is consid- ered the mark of the Beast. Along with the old traditions of Sam- hain, the talk of spirits has come with them as well. Spirits can easily be linked to devil play, hence the relation of 666 to Halloween. Is 666 really such a dangerous number, though? After much research, multiple websites lead to the answer that no, 666 is not as dangerous as we think. In fact, 666 isn’t even the right number. 666 comes from the name Neron Ceasar, the most evil man known to the ancient people. In Hebrew, each letter translates to a number, and when added up, Neron Ceasar’s name equals 666. “The really suggestive hint is that the oldest manuscripts don't agree on the number: some have 616 instead. It's much harder to concoct an explanation that fits both numbers, and only one of the proposed interpretations of the Number of the Beast ac- counts for both: Nero. Remember it was Neron Qeisar in Hebrew. But the final N of Neron is op- tional: the name can also be ren- dered Nero, subtracting the letter Halloween N and its value of 50 to get -- 616” (“The”). All in all, whether it be 666 or 616, the number is re- ally only a bad person’s name written as numbers. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Even though 666 is just a number, people are still con- cerned as to when the 666th Hal- loween will be. Many have said that it is this year. Have they done the math? Let’s review. The first Halloween was recorded in 43 A.D. 43+666=709. Alright, so we missed the very first occur- rence of the 666th Halloween. Big deal. What about Halloween in the Northern United States? The United States became a country in 1776. 1776+666=2442. Well, we won’t be around to witness that one. How about the easiest way to check? 2016-666=1350. After some simple math, it’s easy to see that the rumors floating around about 2016 having the 666th Halloween are false. Don’t be- lieve everything you see on the Internet, and have a happy Hal- loween! ("The Numerology of the Beast." The Numerology of the Beast. N.p., 14 Oct. 2004. Web. 22 Sept. 2016.)

Disclaimer: This article was not written to challenge any religious beliefs. It was written as a historical coverage of the origins of Halloween.

666 is a number that has been associated with Halloween for many years. Why is such an evil number associated with an inno-cent holiday about candy and cheap scares? To solve this mys-tery, it may be best to look into the origins and true meaning of Halloween. Halloween was first recorded in 43 A.D. by the Celts, who celebrat-ed their new year on November 1st. Samhain, what would later be known as Halloween, was cele-brated on October 31st. Costumes were worn to ward off any linger-ing spirits. On a Current Issue... By: Sarah Pierce

United We Stand Sep 2, 2016 By: Sarah Beth Pierce At United States Air Force Academy

NFL Quarterback Refuses to Stand for National Anthem “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” That was the response NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick gave to the media after refusing to stand during the national anthem be-fore one of the 49ers preseason games. He chose not to stand as a way of protesting for the Black Lives Matter Movement. Some people applauded Kaepernick for standing up for what he believes in or perhaps better put “sitting down” for what he believes in. Others were less pleased with him. He was booed as he took the field that evening, and later, videos appeared on the internet of fans burning Kaepernick’s jersey. So is what Colin Kaepernick did justified?

Our flag is far more than just a flag. It represents bravery, courage, and unity. Not only that but it is a representation of all the men and women who have given their lives so we can be free. It is a symbol that EVERY American should take great pride in. Living in America, you can protest whatever you want, whenever you want, but it is just plain wrong to disrespect our flag by choosing to not stand and honor it. Too many brave souls have fought to defend this country to dishonor the flag.

I understand that it is his right as an American to sit during the national anthem, but I along with many other Americans strongly believe that you should never disrespect the American flag. As Americans, we do not have to agree with all of our country’s decisions, but people have fought and died for our right to dislike things that happen here, therefore, out of re-spect for the fallen, you should stand up. The fact that we have the freedom to sit during the national anthem alone shows how great this country is. So Colin Kaepernick next time you want to refuse to stand during the national anthem, think about all the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice to defend that right and at least stand up to honor them.

Colin Kaepernick did more damage than he realized when he chose not to stand. He showed the world that American’s are

divided, and that is extremely disheartening. We won’t always agree on everything, but we must always stay together. After all, we weren’t named the United States of America for being divided. So to everyone who is wondering whether or not it is okay to sit during the national anthem, I have three words for you. UNITED WE STAND!

D.I.Y Costumes By: Brayden Pearson

Artist of the Month By: Maria Rodriguez

Do you ever have that last minute freak out when you forgot to buy a Halloween costume? If so, here are some last minute ideas that could save you from a disaster. These girls to

the bottom left, used a giant plastic bag and placed balloons to look like the jelly beans. The man above covers himself in nametags with names that are not his that he appar-ently “stole.” Not only have you seen a few easy D.I.Y. costumes, but they are made with items that you can find at your own house! Happy trick or treating!

Nebula in a bottle was made by some Art League

members after school to sell for the R.O.K .

A spray paint galaxy by Taylor Hand was also made

to sell at the R.O.K .

Notable Athletes By: Sydney Segroves

4

Golf: Spencer Smith

Football: Tyler Hutchinson

Volleyball: Trey Perryman and

Austin Moss

Cross Country: Nate Mihnovich Soccer: Dora Ramos

“Spencer Smith loves the game of

golf, has mental toughness, and

has good handwork on the golf

course,” Coach Ed explains and

tells us why Spencer was his

choice for this month. Coach Grooms tells us, “Tyler

Hutchinson has the gift of being a

leader. He is one of the quarter-

backs for our team, and with that

you have to have leadership. He

takes the game seriously, but he

puts his school work first.”

A “Notable Athlete” is one who not only excels in his or her sport but also in the classroom. Also, he or she exhibits good character and a cooperative spirit. We asked each coach to make this selection because we feel this has the most meaning for the athletes chosen.

Coach Davis talks about how

much work these two gentleman

do for the girls. “If the volleyball

girls need anything, you will see

them go and do what they are

asked for, and they will do it with-

out complaining. They both work

very hard on their school work

and make sure their work comes

first,” Coach Davis explains.

Coach Brothers tells us, “Dora

works hard during all the practices

and games. You will hear her on

the field talking to the girls about

what they are needing help on.

She may be focused on the field,

but to her, the school work will

always come before soccer.”

“Nate has a really interesting back-

ground, and with that he has

brought leadership to the team.

Nate has set the fastest time for

our school in a 5k. His time was

18.06. We are very proud to have

him on our team and expect him

to keep helping us on the time,”

Coach Neill.

On Friday, September

9, 2016, all the faculty

and students of Commu-

nity High School gath-

ered in the gym for the

first pep rally of the year.

Several sports teams were

announced including

golf, volleyball, soccer,

football, and cross coun-

try. All four classes com-

peted in a really intense

game of flip-the-bottle

with sophomores coming

in first place, seniors in

second, juniors in third,

and freshmen in fourth.

Each class got involved

and were very peppy. The

senior class managed to

get their whole class down

on the floor for the battle

cry competition. In the

end, the sophomores

managed to out

scream the seniors. All

in all, we had a great

first pep rally.

GO, VIKINGS!!!!

Senior Hannah Mitchell and Sophomore

Logan Brothers take a minute from the

pep rally fun to snap a quick picture.

“And the spirit stick goes to… THE SOPHOMORES!”

Trump vs. Clinton

6

By: Nathan Smith and Gracie Miles

Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton?

A great president once said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” This year’s presidential election may be the most vitally important election in U.S. history. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton both have very opposing views. Most people don’t want to vote at all because they dislike or disagree with both candidates. In reality, the majority of citizens will vote against a candidate rather than voting for one. In other words, they will vote for the lesser of two evils. We interviewed a few students to get their opinion on the sub-ject. When asked which candidate she would vote for and why, Logan Brothers responds, “Donald J. Trump. Hillary is crooked; she is not fit to lead the United States. Trump’s views align a little more with my beliefs.” We then asked Jes-sica Hesson who she would vote for and she states, “I would vote for Hillary Clinton. Mainly because Bernie Sanders is no longer in the race. I was raised in a democratic family and have always had very liberal views. Although Hillary Clinton is not my favorite, I think that she would do a better job than Trump.” One who would like to remain anony-mous comments, “Whichever one I vote for, I am going to vote him for an idiot. It is like Dolly Parton said, ‘They’re both nuts.’”

In a recent poll, 88% of

our student body voted for

Donald Trump while 12%

voted for Hillary Clinton.

Of the 36 seniors eligible

to vote this November, on-

ly 26 say they will be

participating.

Sometimes It’s the Simple Things in Life By: Nurse Jill

It is a good idea to always

wash your hands before you are

going to eat something, after

you use the restroom, before

cooking, before and after giving

first aid, after blowing your

nose, if your hands are visibly

dirty, or just if you think about it

throughout the day. You should

also wash your hands if you have

been touching dirty things, such

as pencils, door knobs, money,

cell phones, computers, gaming

devices, sports equipment, etc.

If you don’t have access to a sink

with soap and water, use a hand

sanitizer such as Germ-X.

It doesn’t sound too com-

plicated, right? We just have to

remember to not only wash our

hands but wash them effectively.

Let’s all take the time to do a

very simple thing so that we can

stay healthy and enjoy all the

things that this season has to

offer. Happy fall!

Fall is officially here,

and with the changing sea-

sons comes all kinds of sim-

ple things for us to enjoy:

football, television season

premieres, the leaves

changing colors, less hu-

midity, campfires, etc. Fall

also typically marks the be-

ginning of cold and flu sea-

son. Many people find

themselves asking what

they can do to keep from

getting sick. Of course, it’s

highly recommended that

everyone gets a flu shot to

help prevent the flu specifi-

cally. But what about all the

other germs out there that

can make us sick? We have

all been taught for years

about keeping our hands

away from our face (this in-

cludes rubbing your eyes,

picking your nose, putting

your fingers in your mouth,

and scratching your ears).

We know that we need to

keep all cuts and scrapes

covered until they are

healed. We have also

learned how to cover our

coughs and sneezes with

either our elbows or a tis-

sue. We should also be sure

to stay at home if we are sick

so that we don’t spread it to

other people. However, even

though all of these are really

good things to do, research

has proven that the number

one way to keep yourself

from catching germs and get-

ting sick is very simple: effec-

tive handwashing.

Most people admit to

washing their hands often

during the day, but is it done

effectively? Here are some

tips:

Wash with warm water and

plenty of soap

Scrub every surface of your

hands (top and palms, in

between fingers, under fin-

gernails, and wrists) – scrub

for at least 20 seconds (the

time it takes to sing the

“Alphabet Song” or the

“Happy Birthday” song

twice)

Rinse every bit of soap off

your hands

Use a paper towel to cut off

the water

Dry your hands with a clean

paper towel

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has one common goal and that is to find a cure for children who are fighting cancer and other life-threatening diseases. According to the website Kids Vs. Cancer, “Each year around 13,500 children are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S.; that’s more than a class-room of kids a day.” St. Jude is one of the state’s projects for TASC (Tennessee Association of Student Councils). Our stu-dent council decided to start a fundraiser to raise money for kids fighting cancer at St. Jude.

Monday, August 22 was the first day student council started “Vikings Sail for St. Jude.” The goal was for our school to raise $1,000 by Au-gust 26. Student Council planned to raise that money by playing a daily annoying song at lunch, ordering t-shirts, and hosting a kickball tournament for the students.

“We would absolutely do it again,” Mrs. Lem-mons exclaimed, “Community came to-gether with such a giving spirit! I hope the staff and students of CHS realize what a difference they made by their generosity.” Student Council Presi-

dent Hannah Mitchell added, “It was our first time since I’ve been in high school doing something this big. I was so excited to lead and be part of such a great event for a good cause. We raised $2,400 for St. Jude, and I hope the kickball tournament is some-thing that becomes a CHS tradi-tion.”

Sailing for St. Jude

Ralston’s Ramblings

We will soon be send-ing out our first quarter report cards. Are you ready for your grades? I hope everyone has had a strong start and es-tablished a strong foun-dation for your classes. If you don't feel good about

your foundation, what have you done about it? Don't sit on the side with your arms crossed and pout. Your teachers want to see you succeed. Talk with your teachers. Ar-range time before or after school to work with them. Mrs. Rhonda Leverette has a lab open before and after school to help.

Being a learner is not a passive job for the student. Take charge and challenge yourself to do your best. Take every task as an opportunity to better yourself. Eve-ry homework, every quiz, every test and every project. Many of students take great pride in having the highest score in Pokemon Go or WarCraft or whatever the newest app or game is. Take great pride in having a high ACT score, a high test average, or whatever opportunity you have. A high score is what is relative for you. My wife and I challenge our sons to "do your best." Likewise, ask yourself, "Am I doing my best?" If not, fix it! Be a part of the best school.............period!!!!

and coworkers to receive this award, and it just goes to show

the quality of character we have here at Community. Officer Farrell has definitely earned

this award.” You can find Officer Farrell at almost any school event, proving that he loves

Community and everyone involved with the school. Next time you see him, take a minute

to stop and say thanks and congrats on his special award.

Letters to the Editors

Here are a few things that

you walk past every school

day, and you might not even

realize it. Do you have any

idea what these objects

could be? The answers are

on page 21.

Dear Viking Voice Staff,

Good Friday!!!

Just wanted to say “Great Job Viking

Voice”! Keep up the good work. You are

all making us proud!

Do teachers have weird habits? By: Sydney Segroves

No, teachers do not have weird (or

interesting) habits. The stereotypical

teacher is just mean and not human.

They spend all their time at school

and grading papers, practicing to be

mean. Just kidding; they have weird

and interesting habits, many of them.

The habits are there, you just may

not know them outside of school. All

the way up to the nicest teachers, they

all have weird habits.

The first weird habit is a pre-game

burrito. Coach Davis explains that he

always has to have his pre-game burri-

to.

Next we have bear

wrestling, and this is a

weird habit Mr. McClain

has.

Is it Mrs. Lawell or “Dr. Pimple

Popper?” Mrs. Lawell watches “Dr.

Pimple Popper” before she goes to

bed! That should make for a good

night’s sleep.

Breaking into a dance isn’t a weird

thing to do, unless you do it at any

random time and place.

Mr. Bowling breaks into a

dance anytime and any

place. He explains that

he will catch himself

dancing in the middle

of class while teaching.

“ Mr. Brown who are you talking

to?” Oh, it’s no one, just his dog Wal-

ly! Come to think of it, don’t most of

us talk to our dog? Yeah, not that

weird. But it would

be interesting to

hear what is said...

No Need to Fear...Viking Voice Is Here! By: Sydney Segroves

No matter how strong you be-

lieve you are, you will always fear

something. Many people say they

don’t fear anything. Yet, almost

everyone fears something; they

just may not want to show it.

Baby dolls are little girls’ play

toys, and they

make them happy.

For Brooke Taylor,

baby dolls are her

biggest fear.

Tyler Hutchinson’s

biggest fear is Hillary

becoming president;

his other fear is

Trump getting

us blown up.

Hannah Redd’s big-

gest fear is what our

country is going to be-

come.

Sarah Mayo

is fearing

crooked Hil-

lary.

Alyssa Freeman

has a common fear:

falling asleep and

not waking up.

What is your

biggest fear?

What Crooked Hillary

looks like to Sarah.

“I will be your president!” vol-

unteered Tyler. That’s the state

spirit!

I may still be asleep.

“Tyler is becoming presi-

dent. Help us now!” ex-

claimed Hannah.

Interesting Facts By: Zachary Lohn

Trending Now By: Gracie Miles

R.I.P Harambe. Harambe the gorilla has been trending all over social media the past few weeks. All over Twitter, Ha-rambe has been making his debut in memes or his own hashtags. Even our own students have taken a liking to the gorilla. Are you on the Harambe bandwagon?

There are many things about our school that you don’t know. For instance, if you were asked who our first principal was, the person asking the question would get very few true an-swers. The answer to this question is Har-ry Harrison Kroll. He was principal here from 1925-

1926. What he did after that would be less known. Kroll became a pro-fessor at UT Martin and taught English Composition and Litera-ture. He wrote a series of papers that were submitted to the school which were then published for

future reference. But he also wrote a screenplay that featured Bette Davis called The Cabin in the Cotton. According to Assistant Principal

Dr. Keith Williams, this was Bet-te Davis’ first major role in

a movie. Dr. Williams also stated, “This is a story that needs to be continu-ously passed along. This is

something fascinating that everyone needs to be told.” There is also another interesting fact about our school among many others. Last year everyone was talking

about it being the 50th year of the gym, but no one was talking about the school itself. Community Schools turned 90 last year, but this was overshadowed by the

gym’s popularity. The Community School itself was founded in 1925, and it’s name derived from the combi-nation of other schools in the

area. Our school was formed to keep school crowding at a mini-mum. Our crest says we were founded in 1925, but it is viewed so often that people overlook the year. This might be why there was-n’t much attention to the school itself turning 90. To learn more interesting facts, check out Com-munity High’s website under “Archive.”

high school gym dis-

plays the year.

appears.

NASRO — What does that stand for? By: Brayden Pearson

A familiar face in our school has received one of the highest

awards in her field. Our own school resource officer, Officer

Harvey, has earned the title of National Resource Officer

Practitioner from the National Association of School Re-

source Officers (NASRO)! This accreditation shows her care

and compassion for her communi-

ty and concern for being the best

she can be for our school. “This

has been a goal of mine for the

last five years,” com- mented Har-

vey. When asked about the pro-

cess, Harvey said she had to

complete a three- day, advanced

course, attend a na- tional confer-

ence in Orlando, and have 160

hours of specialized training. She

added that the paperwork took approximately four hours to

complete! Thank you, Officer Harvey, for your commitment

to excellence, and congratulations on your accomplishment!

King of the Swing By: Grayson Garrette and Macie Lemmons

The late Hall of Fame golfer Ar-nold Palmer once said, “Success in golf depends less on strength of body and more on strength of mind and character.” The Community Vikings and Viqueens golf teams have had a very successful season. The Vikings finished the season 11-6, and the Viqueens finished the season 5-7.

“It has been an amazing golf season. I am very proud of the way the team improved throughout the year,” explains Coach Edwards. “Unfortunately, neither the Vikings nor Viqueens advanced as a team to the region; however, Spencer Smith, Grayson Garrette, and Han-nah Goodwin advanced to the re-gion as individuals. It was an out-standing season for Community golf, and we hope to have an even better season next year.”

Each player’s season average:

Hannah Goodwin – 47

Macie Lemmons – 64

Grayson Garrette – 41

Spencer Smith – 43

Jackson Wisener – 50

Brayden Stephenson – 51

Stone Ralston – 51

Gunner Sakich – 53

Zachary Lohn – 58

Branson Trott - 63
