Women’s Golf looks AheAd to horizon leAGue ChAmpionship

Cleveland State concluded its regular season over the weekend, placing 10th of 12 teams at the Dolores Black Bowling Green Falcon Invitational. The Vikings now set their sights on the Horizon League Champi-onship which will be played from April 27-29 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., at the Mission Inn Resort. CSU shot rounds of 332 and 344 at Bowling Green over the week-end and were led by junior Ariel Sparrow who carded rounds of 82-80 (162) to finish tied for 19th place. She was joined in 19th place by freshman Colleen Miller who was playing as an individual and fired rounds of 80-82. Sparrow continues to lead the team with an 81.2 scoring average after notching her fourth top-20 finish of the season. As a team, the Vikings are averaging 326.8 per round, putting the Vikings on pace to break the single season scoring record of 333.8, set in 2009-10.

SOFTBALL Cleveland State returns to action this week, playing a single game at Notre Dame at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday (April 19) and a three-game league se-ries at Green Bay on Saturday and Sunday (April 21-22). The Vikings went 3-2 last week, splitting a home doubleheader with St. Francis (Pa.) on Thurs-day (April 12) before taking two of three at Loyola over the weekend. Dara Toman sparked the offense, going 6-for-9 (.667) at the plate, including three homers to give her 18 for the year, equaling Tess Sito’s school re-cord for home runs in a season set in 2010. Sara Shields was 2-1 in the circle with a 2.88 ERA in 17 innings pitched while Megan Bashak had a complete game victory in Saturday’s (April 14) 5-3 win over Loyola.

MEN’S TENNIS Cleveland State will close out the regular sea-son with a pair of Horizon League contests this weekend, hosting Butler on Saturday, April 21 and Wright State on Sunday, April 22. Both matches are set for 3:00 p.m. starts. CSU got back on the winning track last week-end, earning a 6-1 victory at UIC and a 7-0 sweep at Valparaiso. With the two wins CSU now stands at 9-10 on the year and 3-2 in Horizon League action. Yannick Goossens, Matt Kuelker, Nolan Marks, Jorg van der Vloet and Matt Ford each posted two singles wins on the weekend, while the CSU doubles teams swept all six matches. Ford leads CSU with a 17-14 singles mark this season while he is also the only Viking to be unde-feated in league play at 5-0.

WOMEN’S TENNIS The Vikings will close out the regular season with a two-match homestand this weekend, hosting Butler and Wright State. CSU will face the Bulldogs on Saturday, April 21 and the Raiders on Sunday, April 22. Both matches will begin at 11:00 a.m. CSU (13-8, 5-1 HL) split its two contests last week, defeating Valparaiso (7-0) and falling to league-leading UIC (5-2). Kara Sherwood and Alex Power each picked up two singles victories, Sher-wood at No. 3 singles and Power at the No. 6 spot. Following her two wins last weekend, Power enters the week on a seven-match win streak. Power, who is undefeated in league play at 6-0, leads the Vikings with a 23-11 singles record this season, while Nicole Janek ranks second with a 21-11 mark. Sherwood is just two victories shy from becoming the third Viking to post 20 wins this sea-son, currently sitting at 18-13.

MEN’S GOLF Cleveland State competes in its final event of the regular season when the Vikings play in the 54-hole Ball State EY Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (April 21-22). The Vikings were last in action on Friday and Saturday (April 13-14) at the Detroit Titan Invita-tional, placing fifth of 13 teams despite having to play four and count four. Michael Klaric led the Vikings, tying for fifth place at 214 with rounds of 73-68-73. His second round 68 was tied for the lowest round of the day and was Klaric’s low round of the season. Andrew Bailey (75-75-73) and Michael Balcar (73-70-80) tied for 16th place with Balcar’s second round 70 a season-low.

lASt WeekKlaric helped the Vikings finish fifth of 13 teams at the Detroit Titan Invitational over the weekend. Playing with just four players, Klaric led the Vikings, tying for fifth place with rounds of 73-68-73 for a season-low 54-hole total of 214. His second round 68 marked a season low and was also tied for the second lowest round of the day. Klaric ranks second on the team with a 73.9 scoring average and has two top-five finishes this year.
