48th Engineers’ Dayin commemoration of 155th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Sir. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya

As usual, the Chief Guest, Guests of Honour and other dignitaries garlanded the statues of Sir MV and Dr. KL Rao. Er. VRadha Krishna, MIE, Local Center Committee Member welcomed the members & audience and invited the dignitaries on to thedais. As a customary, lighting the lamp and garlanded the portrait of Sir MV were done by the Chief Guest, Guests of Honourand other dignitaries on the dais. Dr. P Ravindra Babu, FIE, Imm. Past Chairman of this localcenter presented the welcome address while Dr. M Kamaraju, FIE, Chairman of this localcenter presided over the meeting and given his presidential address. Er. D Ramesh Kumar,MIE, Local Center committee member presented the Life & Achievements of Sir MV. Dr. PKodanda Rama Rao, FIE, Local Center Committee Member introduced the Key Note Speaker.

The speaker while delivering his key note address with PPP on this year’s theme :Engineering Challenges for Knowledge Era said that as the population is growing day byday and their needs & desires are expanding, the problem of sustaining civilizations continuousadvancement with improvement in quality of life brings many challenges to engineering fraternity. The important engineeringchallenges which needs immediate attention are…

Sustainable energy: At present, roughly 85% of energy is derived from fossil fuels such as oil, natural gas and coal in theworld which can be depleted over due course of time where as solar energy consumption is well below 1% of total energyconsumption. Solar energy provides 10,000 times as much as all the commercial energy that humans use on the planet.According to the survey conducted in 2014, usage of solar power in the world, Germany Ranked 1st with 35.5 Gigawatts, ChinaRanked 2nd with 18.3 GWs, United States ranked 4th with 12GWs and India ranked 12th with 2.3GWs. This Solar powergeneration requires engineering innovation for capturing the sun’s energy, storing it for use when sun itself is obscured andmaking technology more efficient with developments of Nano Technology.

Carbon Sequestration: International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that India will be in the top three emitters of the world by2030 in terms of total CO2 emitted each year and it is currently ranked sixth. Today, every million molecules of air contain about380 molecules of carbon dioxide which is about 280 molecules in pre industrial times. So developing a system for capturing thecarbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels and sequestering it safely away from the atmosphere is another EngineeringChallenge. According to the IEA, the targets for reduction (1991 to 2030) in CO2 emission are 19% to 34% for China, 13% to17% for India, 30% to 37% for Mexico, 32% to 49% for Brazil, and 12% to 21% for Indonesia. It is estimated that reservoirscapable of containing trillion tons of carbon dioxide are needed by the 21st century. This can be accomplished by sedimentaryrock formation with pores containing salty water and also Ocean Sequestration.

Access to Clean Water: Providing clean water and proper sanitation is one of the greatest human development challengesof the early 21st century. According to the Millennium Development Goals Report 2012, 11 per cent of the global population (783million people) remains without access to an improved source of drinking water and, at the current pace, 605 million people willstill lack coverage in 2015. In India, mostly, water supplies are contaminated by the people discharging toxic contaminants.Household water usually accounts for less than 5% of the total water use where as 80% of the water use is for agriculture andindustry. The greatest challenge is to make desalination of sea water using nano technology approach called nano-osmosis tofilter out salt with the use of tiny tubes of carbon.

Urban Infrastructure: Another challenge is modernizing the fundamental infrastructures that support civilization. It is clearthat India’s annual per capita spending is $50, which is only 14% of China’s $362 and less than 3% of the United Kingdom’s$1772. We need to build the necessary infrastructure and integrated transportation system which contributes to the joy of livingby keeping in mind the parameters such as environmental, energy, cost, speed, aesthetic values and land scape design.

Health Informatics: According to IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics, the availability of new medicines by disease topatients in case of Anti-infectives & Antivirals is 6% in USA, 1% in India, 4% in China and in case of Ancologies, it is 19% inUSA, 2% in India and 6% in China and only 4.2% of India’s GDP is spent on healthcare good and services where as 18% in theUnited States. We need to build a robust health informatics system to detect, track and mitigate both natural health and terrorismemergencies. So Monitoring devices to be introduced in the form of tiny electronic sensor to be embedded either in cloths orbody and in the form of MEMS-WIMS.

WORLD HABITAT DAY

Engineer-better Medicine: One of the important challenges is to develop a better system to diagnose and treat peoplebased on combination of genetic information with clinical data to optimally tailor drugs and doses inturn will reduce the medicalcost, trial and error treatments and cures cancer.

Secure cyberspace: Personal privacy and national security in the 21st century play a major role. Electronic computing andcommunication pose some of the most complex challenges engineering has ever faced. So the engineers are challenged todevelop better security such as biometric and iris technologies to block access from outside attackers.

Globalization: Integration of economies, societies and cultures through communication, transportation and trade in bringingrapid change in technology across the globe because of which we are moving for storage capacities from giga to tera to peta toexa, which means that a notebook of worth $1000 may have a data processing speed and memory equivalent to human brain.

All the above challenges can be addressed in the modern era if the engineer is equipped with right knowledge and skillsleading to design and development of solutions for real world problems, considering the society and environment into accountand attitude to work in multi cultural teams with thirst for life long learning.

As usual, this year also the Vijayawada Local Center Committee selected the following Awards for the following personalities

a. Eminent Member of IEI, Vijayawada Local Center AwardEr. M Lingeswara Rao, FIE, Former Chairman of this local center.

05th October, 2015 : The Vijayawada Local Center of IEI and Lingaya’s Institute of Management & Technology, Vijayawada organizedjointly the World Habitat Day – 2015 at Lingaya’s Institute Premises and the program culminated successfully.

A one day symposium on WORLD HABITAT DAY was conducted by Department of CIVIL Engineering which was attended by students fromdifferent colleges of Krishna and Guntur districts. Dr. S Ramesh, P.hD., Head, Department of Architecture, School of Planning and Architecture,(SPA) Vijayawada was the Chief Guest while Dr. Abdul Razak Mohamed, P.hD., Head, Department of Planning, School of Planning andArchitecture, (SPA) Vijayawada was the Guest of Honour and gave PPT presentations citing world wide examples of utilization of public spacesand necessity of innovation in making world a better habitable place. Dr. M Kamaraju, FIE, Chairman, The Institution of Engineers (India),Vijayawada Center presided over the meeting and inspired the budding engineering by his inspiring talk while Dr. Sai Babu, Principal ofLingaya’s Institute enlightened the students of the importance of Habitat day. Meeting was attended by host of CIVIL & Architecture studentsfrom different parts of the state.

Prizes were given to the winners of different events (Poster Presentation, Model Making, Paper Pre-sentation, Quiz Competition, Design Competition) by Prof. D Ramesh Kumar, MIE, CEO of Sigma 9Design group, Vijayawada and also delivered the talk on the above occasion on this year’s theme : PUB-LIC SPACES FOR ALL.

The speaker while delivering his talk on the theme said that each year on World Habitat Day, we reflecton the state of human settlements and on what we want the cities of the future to look like. This year’s

observance follows the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for SustainableDevelopment – an inspiring new framework that will guide our efforts to end poverty and ensure prosperityfor all on a healthy planet.

The new Sustainable Development Goals – which include SDG11 to “make cities and human settle-ments inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable” – represent a broad international consensus that recog-nizes sustainable urban development as a transformational approach. As part of an integrated agenda, cities and human settlements have an important role to play across the entire spectrum of the 2030 Agenda.

The theme of World Habitat Day 2015 is “Public Spaces for All”. Frequently overlooked and underval-

ued, public spaces are increasingly being recognized as the vibrant, beating hearts of the world’s towns and cities, which are today home tohalf of humanity. Public spaces are crucial for poor and vulnerable citizens. Improving access to them, and making them safe for women and

girls, increases equity, promotes inclusion and combats discrimination, High quality.

Public spaces encourage people to communicate and collaborate with each other and to participate in public life. Public spaces can alsoprovide basic services, enhance connectivity, spawn economic activity and raise property values while generating municipal revenue. Butsuccessful public spaces do not just happen; they require careful collaboration among local authorities, local inhabitants and other actors.

The Habitat III Conference, to be held in Quito in October 2016, offers an opportunity to point the way toward solutions to the challenges ofrapid urbanization. I look forward to working with all partners to make Habitat III a success – and to enable people everywhere to enjoy publicspaces where we are equal, where our cultures and histories are reflected, and where we can shape a future that is safe and sustainable for all.The Management of Lingaya’s Institue honoured the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Speaker, Chairman and Hon. Secretary of IEI, VJLC withshawl & Memento. The meeting was attended by Er. Rajling Gadde, Chairman, Lingaya's Institute, Prof.N.
