\IGNETTES FOR STRINGS - String Orchestra with PercussionBy Lloyd Conley
. PROGRAM NOTES.
Vignettes For Strings is a set of four short, connected sketches with titles that derivemore or less from the style of the music:
1. Scherzo - A lively piece in 214, based on a recurringT-bar melody.2. Ballad - Soft and slow in3l4 time, involving brief melodic segments in all parts.3. Interlude - A short introduction (in 414) to the layered rnelodies in the tinal segment.4 Rondo - As each layer is added, development grows, leading to a coda-like finale.
. PERFORMANCE SUGGESTIONS .
Scherzo should be light and tast with care given to balancing the active snare drum part(light sticks will help). Hold the fennata at 63 until the chime tone has fully decayedbefore going on, a portend of the coming change of mood.
Ballad should be played with rhythrnic freedom. Give careful attention to flowingconnections between sustained tones and moving parts, there are many.
Interlude provides a short, tranquil, quartet-format introduction to the four layeredmelodies used in the final section. It may be played soli (as written), by a srnall group,by full orchestra, or even ornitted entirely (in which case add a fennata to measure 101).
Rondo requires balancing each added layer (at ll8l126ll35). The short intersperseddevelopmental sections, as well as the last eight measures, should be strong and forceful.
Tempi are only suggested; play at a speed that puts you at your musical best. There is aconsiderable amount of divisi work in the violins; balance the parts carefully.
With the exception of snare drum, none of the percussion parts are difficult and ifnecessary could be handled by string players. Four players are suggested to cover theparts although careful planning may enable it work with three....except in the Rondo..
