Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.

But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay

Musical Connection“Blowing in the Wind”
Bob Dylan
How many roads must a man walk downBefore they call him a man
How many seas must a white dove sailBefore she sleeps in the sand
How many times must the cannonballs flyBefore they are forever banned
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the windThe answer is blowing in the wind
How many years must a mountain existBefore it is washed to the sea
How many years can some people existBefore they're allowed to be free
How many times can a man turn his headAnd pretend that he just doesn't see
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the windThe answer is blowing in the wind
How many times must a man look upBefore he can see the sky
How many ears must one man haveBefore he can hear people cry
How many deaths will it take till he knowsThat too many people have died
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the windThe answer is blowing in the wind

Unsent LetterDirections: Write a letter from the point of view of one of the characters in The Outsiders. You may choose who the letter will be addressed to, but your letter must coincide with the plot of the novel. There should not be incongruence between what is described in the story (characterization, setting, mood, etc.) and the letter written. You must show an understanding of your character by adapting to his or her language and style. Please use the example below as an example.
(This letter was found in Dally’s pocket after he was shot by the policemen.)
Hey Greasers,Well it’s hard to know what to say at a time like this. I just found out that Johnny died. I couldn’t believe it. Not our Johnny. It seems like I can handle anything, even going to jail again, but I can’t believe he’s gone. He was stupid. That’s what it was. He shouldn’t have let those little kids get to him. He should have looked out for number one. Heroes get hurt. Heroes even die. That’s Johnny’s reward for being so brave. And those left behind are the ones who wish they’d never met the so-called hero. I don’t care anyway. It doesn’t matter. So Johnny’s dead, so what? I can get along fine without him. I don’t need anyone. Not even you guys. Sure, we’re

pals, but everyone knows that can’t last forever. I’ve seen people killed lots of times and it never bothered me. That’s life; get used to it. What’s the point in life anyway? We all know we’re never going to get a break. Sure, we might beat the Socs one day, but they’ll still always be the ones with the nice cars and hot chicks. We’re losers and no one cares whether we live or die. That’s what Johnny found out today. I know you guys might hate me for saying this, but you’re better off in prison than dying in a hospital bed for nothing. Don’t be stupid. I don’t even know why I’m writing this letter…. It doesn’t matter. Nothing matters. Nothing matters now that Johnny’s gone. Man I need a cigarette… I think I might start bawling. Shoot.
