Name _________________ Hour ____ Date____________ SUMMER OLYMPIC PROJECT Overview: The 2016 Summer Olympics were held August 5 th -23 rd in Rio De Janeiro. You will need to evaluate each project requirement to determine which software (Publisher, Word, or Excel) is the best for the given task. As you complete each assignment, turn in each printed document with the grading rubric. There is a rubric for each document. Make sure you are handing in a final product that is ready for public display. I would highly recommend that you take time to self-edit then ask a peer to review your document for errors as well. Always proofread your work for accuracy and format. Any document you turn in will be allowed a one-time correction with only half the points you lost returned to your grade. 1. Decision Making & Research Choose a summer Olympic event to research. The following link would be a good resource: http://www.olympic.org/rio-2016-summer-olympics . All projects will require information you gather during your research. It is very important to you cite your sources as you complete your research. 2. Event Poster You are in charge of promoting a poster of your event at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Create and design a poster on the Event you chose. Be sure all significant details are included. (Who, What, When, Where). Since the Olympics started August 5 th – you can create a flyer that highlights the winner of an event completed. Inform & Entertain!!!!! Basic Guidelines: To create a professional looking advertisement, use no more than three fonts. Be careful of your font selection. Fonts that are too fancy or script-like can be hard to read and distracting. Use starbursts and/or other call-out graphics to communicate important information. Don’t overcrowd your ad with too many graphic images as they will draw attention from the message. Page 1

Overview: The 2016 Summer Olympics were held August 5th-23rd in Rio De Janeiro. You will need to evaluate each project requirement to determine which software

(Publisher, Word, or Excel) is the best for the given task.

1. Decision Making & ResearchChoose a summer Olympic event to research. The following link would be a good

resource: http://www.olympic.org/rio-2016-summer-olympics.All projects will require information you gather during your research. It is very

important to you cite your sources as you complete your research.

2. Event PosterYou are in charge of promoting a poster of your event at the 2016 Summer

Olympic Games. Create and design a poster on the Event you chose. Be sure all significant details are included. (Who, What, When, Where).

Since the Olympics started August 5th – you can create a flyer that highlights the winner of an event completed. Inform & Entertain!!!!!

Basic Guidelines: To create a professional looking advertisement, use no more than three fonts. Be careful of your font selection. Fonts that are too fancy or script-like can be

hard to read and distracting. Use starbursts and/or other call-out graphics to communicate important

information. Don’t overcrowd your ad with too many graphic images as they will draw

attention from the message. Set the margins to .5 inch on all sides. Be sure your page size is 8.5 x 11. Add a page border. Include an eye-catching headline that captures the attention of prospective

readers. Place the headline at the top of your advertisement. Include the important details where they can be easily seen – date, time,

location, tv channel to watch on, etc., but do not label. Do not type sentences or paragraphs on your flyer – highlight the important

information is a quick, easy to ready style.

Consider including the Olympic logo and other relevant information.Required: Credit for pictures is required, it can be placed below the picture.

3. BrochureCreate and design an informational brochure for your event and athlete.

Name _________________ Hour ____ Date____________Brochures are a great way to share information in a format that is easily mailed or handed out. Brochures usually have only a matter of seconds to capture someone’s interest. Make sure yours has a readable, eye-catching design.

Basic Guidelines: Use a three-panel, two-sided format. When folded in thirds the long way

(landscape), the brochure will be divided into six equal panels (three on each side).

Brochures should not be boring. If your brochure contains miles of text, no one is going to read through it. Make sure that you have filled the brochure with eye-catching graphics so that it is appealing and easy to read. Make sure that the headings are self-explanatory, so even if your brochure is not read in its entirety, its message is still delivered.

Your brochure should prominently display your event name. Consider adding additional text and/or graphic images that will encourage readers to continue reading the entire brochure.

When inserting separate pieces of information, consider inserting the information into separate text boxes. This will make it easier if you decide to move information around during the design process.

It is a good idea to plan the layout and design on paper first. To assist you in this process, fold a blank sheet of paper, holding it landscape, into three equal columns. (Completed together in class.) Label what information will be placed where.

Brochure Content Required: Brochure Setup:

o Landscape (8.5 x 11), two-sided document (templates are a good starting point)

o Use bullets or numbered lists instead of paragraphso Use short, memorable statements

Items to include:o Event information

Olympic History Description of Event Records or statistics (winners, year record(s) set, etc.

o Athlete Spotlight (winner or a favorite athlete in that event)

o Minimum of 3 Photos to enhance project but no more than 5 o Refer to the Research Worksheet (attached) for additional topicso Back Panel – Correctly formatted MLA Works Cited (all research, no

exceptions) Credit for pictures can be placed below the picture. Carefully proofread your work for accuracy and format.
