STUDENT FRIENDLY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS – BUSINESS STUDIES

GRADE 9Introduction to Information TechnologyCourse Code: BTT 1OAre you ready for the 21st century? Students will work individually and collaboratively to prepare their business communication skills for any future course or career path they choose. Students will learn positive and productive use of social media, how to troubleshoot technology, present with confidence, and how to protect their online footprint, identity and keep their information safe. Through the hands on use of word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software students will learn to create effective reports, graphs, research, multimedia presentations, posters and websites. Pre-requisite: None

GRADE 10

Introduction to Business, Grade 10 – OpenBBI 2OStudents will get to explore all components of business: production, marketing, managing people, accounting, finance/stock market and running their own business. Every component of business will last for a few weeks, allowing students to develop the strong understanding of the fundamentals for each area and apply theories learned to practical situations they would encounter in business. In addition, students will learn how to develop their public speaking, teamwork and leadership skills through interactive class activities.

This is a course where we apply theories learned through a combination of hands-on projects such as:

Amazing BBI Race – Corporation Challenges Venture Week – Students will be running their own business in the school Stock Market Challenge Creating their own advertisements

GRADE 11

Entrepreneurship: The Venture, Grade 11 – College PreparationBDI 3CThis course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan a successful venture that enables them to achieve their goals. You, as students, will create a venture plan for a business of your choice. Through hands-on experiences, you will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs.

Students will also have an opportunity to demonstrate their entrepreneurial characteristics and skills by assisting in the planning and organizing of a school fundraising event.Prerequisite: None

Marketing: Goods, Services and Events, Grade 11 – College PreparationBMI 3CThis course introduces students to the basic concepts of product marketing, which includes strategies involving product design, pricing, promotion and placement.  Students will examine how trends, issues, economic changes, and information technology influence consumer buying habits.  Students will engage in marketing research, analyze marketing strategies for specific products, and produce a marketing plan for a product of their choice.Prerequisite:  None

Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment, Grade 11 - OpenBTA 3OThis course prepares students for the digital environment. Using a hands-on approach, students will further develop information and communication technology skills through the use of common business software applications. The concept and operation of e-business will be explored, and students will design and create an e-business website. The skills developed in this course will prepare students for success in the workplace and/or postsecondary studies.Prerequisite: None

Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11 – University/College PreparationBAF 3MStudents will get to explore the foundations of accounting, with focus on the accounting cycle for a service businesses. Students will develop a basic understanding of how accounting is applied in the workplace through financial analysis and decision making in the management of a business. Students will also have an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned through technology. In short, real business concepts are explored in a student friendly way.

In addition, students will have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned through a hands-on business simulation that takes a close and practical look at how a typical business might run. Everything learned in this course has a direct real world application.Prerequisite: None

GRADE 12

Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12 – University/College PreparationBAT 4MThis course expands on concepts introduced in BAF 3M. Students will learn real world accounting that will benefit them in both post-secondary business programs, as well as their personal lives. This course expands students’ knowledge of sources of financing, further develops accounting methods for assets, and introduces accounting for partnerships and corporations.

Students will also have opportunities to compete in business competitions for cash prices, which will also improve their post-secondary applications. Assessments are varied and include individual and group projects and hands-on simulations. Prerequisite: Grade 11 Financial Accounting Fundamentals - University/College Preparation (BAF 3M0)

International Business Fundamentals, Grade 12 – University/College PreparationBBB 4MThis course provides an overview of the importance of international business and trade in the global economy and explores the factors that influence success in international markets. Students will learn about the techniques and strategies associated with marketing, distribution, effective communication and global business trends. Students will get the opportunity to complete a hands-on project where they simulate running an international business.  This course prepares students for postsecondary programs in business, including international business, marketing, and management.

Students will have the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned through participating in the David Suzuki Export Fair, to see who has the best plan for selling their product in their foreign country of choice.Prerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in Business Studies, English, or Canadian and World studies

Information and Communication Technology: Multimedia Solutions, Grade 12 –College PreparationBTX 4CThrough various team based projects, students will have opportunities to integrate business software applications and multimedia.  Students will develop their understanding of electronic business and e-commerce environments. Students will also discuss computer related issues in ethics and technology.Prerequisite: Grade 11 Information and Communication Technology: The Digital Environment, - Open (BTA 3O)

Business Leadership: Management Fundamentals, Grade 12 – University/College PreparationBOH 4MThis course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyze the role of a leader in business, with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility are also emphasized.

In addition to theory, this course offers hands on learning where students will have the opportunity to plan, organize, and manage an event within the class/school over the course of the semester. Such events have included: Carnival, Graduation Reception, Holiday Buy Out EventPrerequisite: Any university, university/college, or college preparation course in Business Studies, English, or Canadian and World studies

Personal Life Management, Grade 12 – OpenHIP 4OThis course focuses on preparing students for living independently and working successfully with others. Students will learn to manage their personal relationships and resources to meet their basic needs for independent living. They will also learn about their personal, legal, and financial responsibilities and develop and apply interpersonal skills in order to make wise and responsible personal and occupational choices. Students will apply research and inquiry skills while investigating topics related to personal life management. The course emphasizes the achievement of expectations through practical experiences.

This is a course where we apply theories learned through a combination of hands-on projects such as:

Financial Planning Decision making regarding major purchases (consumerism) Planning and creating healthy meals

Analyzing Current Economic Issues, Grade 12 – UniversityCIA 4UIn this course students will explore how human behaviour impacts our economy through choices on spending, purchasing, saving, and our choice of government. Students will examine the role of government and economic policies, stakeholders, and economic institutions. The course will look at various sources to gather financial and economic information, analyse research, and make recommendations. Students will learn the principles of microeconomics (the study of economic parts) and macroeconomics (the study of economics as a whole).Prerequisite: Any university or university/college preparation course in Canadian World Studies, English, or Social Sciences and Humanities.

Entertainment and Sports Marketing, Grade 12 – UniversityIDC 4UThis course builds on business fundamentals explored in the grade 11 programs, with an emphasis on the entertainment and sports industries. Students will examine topics such as: trends in the Entertainment and Sports Marketing industry; profiling the consumer/fan; examining features and benefits of products/events; product placement and event venues; ticket pricing and sales; advertising and cross-promotion strategies; examine the importance of naming rights, sponsorship and endorsements; event planning; and ethical and legal issues.

Through individual and collaborative inquiry students will develop skills that prepare them for a specialty in marketing in post-secondary and for real life business events in the entertainment and sports industry. There is an emphasis on research, communication skills, teamwork skills and event organization and management.Prerequisite: One of the following grade 11 business courses: Marketing: Goods, Services and Events, Grade 11 – College Preparation (BMI 3C0), Entrepreneurship: The Venture, Grade 11 – College Preparation (BDI 3C0), or Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11 – University/College Preparation (BAF 3M)
