LED lighting – serious businessWelcome to the Spring 2010 edition of Views and solutions, our twice-yearly publication featuring our latest innovative solutions in luminaires, lamps and lighting electronics, including controls.
This edition of Views and solutions focuses wholly on the LED lighting revolution, which is fundamentally changing the dynamics of the lighting business. LED lighting is helping Philips transform people’s lives wherever light is needed – at home and at work, indoors or outside, when they shop, when they travel, when they do business, when they are entertained.
As the world leader in lighting, we are continuing to expand the depth and scope of our range of LED lighting solutions. On the following pages, you’ll find out how we are applying our expertise in LED to simply enhance life with light through new and exciting solutions for every application.
LEDs in offices – ready for take-off!Everything is in place. 2010 is set to be a tremendously exciting year for office lighting. We are now at the defining point where we will see the transition from conventional to LED lighting really gathering momentum.
Philips is driving this transition with the first-ever complete portfolio of LED lighting solutions – lamps, luminaires and controls – for both general and task lighting in offices. Everyone – from boardroom to back-office – can benefit from the energy efficiency, extreme adaptability and now also high visual comfort of LED lighting solutions.
Specifically designed to meet the needs of people in offices, this new portfolio makes a serious statement about innovation, design and sustainability. For visionary architects and interior designers everywhere, now’s the time to seize the moment and help shape the office of the future.

Higher levels of creative freedomAs the global market leader in lighting, Philips is at the cutting edge of innovation and design. Nowhere is this cutting edge more incisive and inspiring than with LED technology. That’s because the very nature of LEDs offers so much scope for new thinking and new ideas.
LEDs are highly compact, which means higher levels of creative freedom in luminaire design. And since LEDs are electronic devices, they can be precisely controlled with digital intelligence to create the exact lighting effect required for the users’ needs, preferences or mood.
Not surprisingly, all this creative freedom has spawned a new wave of office lighting solutions. For example, our DayWave concept, with its graceful curves, adds more than a touch of elegance to any office. New concepts such as DaySign and DayZone further extend the possibilities, while the ToBeTouched range of controls brings consumer-style ease of use to the workplace.
Views and Solutions – Spring 2010 5
Green-light thinkingOur new complete portfolio of LED office lighting is modern, stylish and innovative. It has also given the green-light to sustainability and an explicit ‘GO’ to energy saving.
Our retrofit MASTER LED lamps, designed to replace halogen and GLS bulbs, offer energy savings of as much as 80%. Further savings are possible with our LED luminaires, which are up to 50% more energy-efficient than fluorescent solutions. Used together with lighting controls, LED-based solutions are setting new standards in watts consumed per square meter.
In addition, LEDs eliminate the usage of hazardous substances, such as mercury. Also, the materials used last longer – up to three times longer. LEDs typically have an operational lifetime of 50,000 hours, compared with 15,000 hours for fluorescent lighting. This means that LED light points installed in a new building can often last the entire lifetime of the office – creating even more savings in terms of maintenance.
Philips’ new LED luminaire portfolio anticipates future office lighting norms – green-light thinking all the way!

SchoolVision – light for better learningWe all want our children to have the benefit of a healthy, stimulating learning environment – a classroom where they can feel at ease and concentrate, so they get the most out of every schoolday. At the same time, we know education budgets are under unprecedented strain.
Our new SchoolVision concept offers the ideal solution. This innovative, energy-efficient classroom lighting system improves learning conditions, and thus the learning process, so that teacher and pupils achieve better results.
Views and Solutions – Spring 2010 17
How does it work? The teacher selects one of four dedicated classroom scenes – Energy, Focus, Calm, Normal – via a touchpad. The lighting ambience is tailored to the activity at hand and/or the time of day. Each lighting scene offers visual comfort, with no shadows or glare.
This pioneering solution, with seamless changes in the brightness and warmth of the light, was independently tested by the Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf (university clinical center for child and youth psychosomatic research) as part of a year-long scientific experiment in schools across Hamburg, Germany. The results were impressive:
• Concentration: 45% fewer errors made• Reading: 35% more words read• Restlessness: 77% decrease
Energy-efficient solutionAs well as improving learning performance, SchoolVision can also ease the school’s financial burden. Daylight sensors adjust the lighting according to the incident sunlight, and presence detectors shut off the lights when the classroom is empty, enabling considerable energy savings.

OccuSwitch Wireless – the simple way to save energyWe all want to save energy with our lighting systems, but adding lighting controls in an existing building can be costly.
OccuSwitch Wireless is extremely easy to install and delivers cost-effective lighting control. Compatible with most luminaire/lamp types, it simply switches the lights off when an area is vacated, enabling significant savings.OccuSwitch Wireless consists of a thin, battery-powered sensor mounted on the ceiling and a separate actuator, which can be easily installed almost anywhere in the electrical installation. In an installation with connector systems, the optional cables make fitting even simpler: just unplug the luminaire and insert the actuator.

eW Blast Powercore – energy-efficient, high-intensity white LED floodlighteW Blast Powercore is an LED floodlight providing a high-intensity wash of neutral or warm white light at a significantly lower power draw than comparable non-LED fixtures. It is ideal for applications as diverse as highlighting architectural features, general site illumination, and lighting signage and retail spaces. A frosted glass lens for a soft-edge beam and a clear lens for extended light projection support a diversity of white lighting applications.
With incorporated Powercore technology, this cost-effective solution, offers rapid, efficient and accurate control of power output to the fixture directly from line voltage, eliminating the need for external power supplies.
