In Reader’s Workshop, we will read several new stories. We will enjoy a variety of mentor texts, some Laura Numeroff books (author of the month), as well as our leveled books. We have finished up our nonfiction reading unit and the students did a great job “reading to learn.” We will continue to read some nonfiction articles, passages, and books throughout the next marking period.

In our next reading unit, we will revisit characters and making inferences about them based on the text. Students will use facts from a story and prior knowledge to draw conclusions about characters. We will also be working on reading with fluency and expression. Students will be given various opportunities to read aloud to other students to practice with their “story teller’s voice.”

In Phonics, students will build and read words with oa and ow.

For our grammar point for the week, students will learn how to read and write compound words.

In Writer’s Workshop, we finished our individual “How to” books. Students are created a title page, a materials page, an introduction, and wrote and illustrated the steps. We will continue to explore non-fiction books to prepare for our “All About” writing unit. We will begin our All About unit by creating a class book about plants.

In math, we will continue with Chapter 9 on Measurement. Students will measure objects using various nonstandard units. Students will also learn to tell time to the hour and half hour. Students need to be able to identify the difference between the minute hand and hour hand.

In Science, in celebration of Earth Day, we will also talk about the environment and how we can take care of the earth. After reading the book, Dear Mother Earth, the students will write a letter to Mother Earth telling her how they will help protect the earth.

Have a restful and enjoyable spring break!
