SEASON 2013/14

YEAR IN REVIEW

PRESIDENT’S REPORTIt is with some sadness that I present my President's report for the Chirnside Park Cricket Club for this year as it will be my last. It has been my privilege to be

President for the past 6 years but I feel that it is time to bring in some new ideas and energy to the Presidency. I hope that you will all get behind our new President, Mark Hardy, and keep developing the Chirnside Park Cricket Club.

From the outside, it may seem that the Club had a poor year as our firsts didn’t win a game after only just losing the grand final last year. If that was the only measure of success then it was not good. However, I don’t accept that this is the only measure as there were far more positives than this negative.

These positives are: Our other 3 sides all made the finals with the seconds failing to win the

grand final by the smallest of margins. We had an increase in our junior teams with U14's, U12's, U10's and a

large number of Milo in2cricket children participating. We experimented with having international players. We hosted grand finals and interleague matches which has put us on the

RDCA radar to become one of their venues of choice. Despite the expenses of our internationals, we were still able to turn an

operating profit over the year; and We are on the steering committee of the Council for the development of

the Kimberley Reserve area.

These positives are not achieved without a lot of hard work and I would like to record my appreciation for the work of the committee over the past year.

Particular credit needs to go to Mark Hardy who has put an immense amount of time into all facets of the club. As well as being heavily involved with the juniors, obtaining new sponsors, and being instrumental in obtaining our international players, he has also been a great help in the canteen. On top of this, he has even filled in on the ground when short on numbers. He has certainly made my job as President much easier and I thank him for that.

I would also like to thank Brad Malbon for his work as Secretary around the club over the year. This is a most difficult and at times thankless job but Brad has not complained but just got on with the job. I am sure that having a year under his belt and with some more help from others on the committee, next year should be a fair bit easier for him.

It is also with some sadness that I thank Mick Green for his work as Treasurer over the year. Mick has done an outstanding job as Treasurer over a number of years but he has decided that he has done his bit and that it is time for him to step aside. In my time with him, he has made my job much easier and he has my personal thanks for that. The fact that we again made a small profit for the year is in part thanks to him for keeping us well aware of our position at all times. Another special thanks to James Borcich who continued his role as bar manager extraordinaire. This is also a demanding job which he carried out with his usual quiet efficiency. I think that most appreciated the variations that he introduced to the bar and hope that this continues into the future.

As usual there is an ongoing special thanks to Sally Bennett for her tireless work doing the canteen and afternoon teas. This is really appreciated by players and supporters alike.

As I mention every year, there is a need for more people to help out on the committee, particularly any who are not actively playing as much of the work is needed while the game is in progress or immediately afterwards. I look forward to more people becoming actively involved in running the club.

Also thanks to all the sponsors and others who supported the Club over the season. We look forward to your continuing involvement over the coming years.

Finally, let me thank all CPCC people who have been a part of the club over my time as President and who have helped the club in any way. If you continue to help the new President as you have helped me, I am sure that the Chirnside Park Cricket Club will go from strength to strength.

Peter Ford.

COACH’S REPORTAfter a very successful 2012/13 season with 3 teams making finals and 2 grand finals, I was very optimistic about our chances this year.

With the 1st's, 2nd's and 3rd's all going up a grade, it was going to be an exciting challenge for the club. We had some new players coming to the club, Brady Sharp, Lachlan Dinger, Jack Hollins, Aaron Lloyd and DC returning.

Training numbers were good throughout the year. A special thanks for those players that made the effort to bowl to the 2’s in grand final week.

The 1st eleven had a tough year only getting half a win for the year and a lot of work has to be done pre season next year to turn that around.

Once again Paul got his side to a grand final! In a very close game the boys stumbled at the last hurdle to unfortunately lose for the second year in a row. It was a great second half of the year by the lads, so be very happy with your efforts.

The 3rd's were captained by David Phippard at the start of the season. David left the club, so DC took over the role. For such a talented team they fell well short of where they should have and I hope to see half of that team playing higher grades next season.

The 4th eleven once again led by Mal Grift, had an up and down season. They had some super individual efforts, with a lot of our young guys doing well with the bat. Making the finals, the guys had a day to forget with it being over on day 1.

3 teams making finals was a good effort, but it would have been nice to have won a flag. Hope to see everyone back next season to have another crack at it.

I would like to thank Rob Clarke for his work at training this year, we can all take a leaf out of his book as he has shown such dedication and commitment for the club over many years. Also, I would like to thank Mark Hardy for his support and tireless work around the club.

This will be my last season as Captain Coach for Chirnside Park. I thank everyone for making me feel welcome over the past couple of seasons. Also, I have appreciated the support of the committee and playing group. I wish the club great success in the future.

ThanksShane Walliker

JUNIOR REPORTThe 2013-2014 season saw the junior component of the Panthers grow considerably, with a new Under 14’s side, an Under 12’s side and an over-flowing Under 10’s side. Firstly I would like to thank the coaches, Mal Grift, Kerry Sheehan and Nathan McFarlane for a fantastic job. I would also like to thank Mark Hardy for the time he put into the development of the Panther Cubs (formerly Milo cricket). Secondly, the parents who contributed their time throughout the year.

Despite none of the competition sides making finals, the growth in the junior players was excellent to see. We have some outstanding young players, highlighted by the fact that three of the Under 14's players had games with the Senior 4th XI team. We also had one of the Under 10's lads step up and join the Under 12’s. Several more will be doing this next season.

Congratulations to Michael Augustine for taking out the RDCA batting average for the Under 14-3 competition, with an average of 99.33. His performance was amazing, with a highest score of 69*, which was made after initially retiring on 40. For the nine games he played, Michael had 6 not outs, including 3 forced retirements, making a total of 298 runs.

As for the future, the club is looking to expand its junior ranks, with 2 non-competition teams in the Under 10’s, and one each for the Under 12's, 14's and 16's competitions. We will be looking for more support from the senior players next year, so please think about how you can help out.

FIRST XI SEASON REPORTAfter falling short last season, I was excited for the challenges ahead of us. With a couple new players in our team, I had high hopes for a successful season.

As in the past, our batting was below par for much of the season, with not too many players averaging in double figures. This is an area that the club desperately needs to improve on.

Our bowling was also average in the second half of the year, leaking too many runs through inconsistent lines. Our fielding was the highlight of the year, Brady Sharp and Groma with the gloves outstanding.

We were competitive in most games, but were unable to win the key moments to get the 8 points. But at no point did we not try our hardest, we just got out classed at times.

It is a shame to see a side with so much talent finish on the bottom of the ladder. But after the South Warrandyte game, our confidence was gone and we never regained it for the rest of the season.

Dan Cousins had a very good year, with bat and ball, winning our team champion. Nath, Groma and Clarkey battled their guts out all year for the side.

I'd like to thank all the players that have played under me in the last 2 seasons. I hope it’s a more successful season next year!!

CheersShane Walliker

SECOND XI SEASON REPORTFor most of the season we were going nowhere in a really frustrating year where it felt like we were one of the better teams in the comp, but we sat near the bottom of the table. The committment level for most of the group just wasn’t there - definitely not at the same level as the previous year. I realise during Summer there are probably 100 better things to do than spending it on the cricket field………………

Watching BJ bowl dirt balls. Listening all day to Shark telling us how he is our best opening batsman (but

averages 2). Listening to Shark beg for a bowl all day (but averages 102). Hearing Harry tell us all how he bats better than Bradman. Watching Hughesy trying to stop a ball from rolling between his legs by not

moving at all. Hearing Woody repeatedly saying sorry – for everything and anything

happening that day. Having to be around Wheelsy (lost it). Having to be close enough to smell Jacko’s cricket bag. Watching Borch (Dan) flop on the ground like a dolphin trying to stop the ball

with his body instead of his hands (still fails to stop the ball). Having to look at Ray’s arse all day as he tries to fit in with the cool kids and

wear his pants around his knees. Watching Briz refusing to chase the ball in the field and then tell the bowlers

to fetch the ball themselves because they bowled trash. Having to field 1 short for an hour on a hot day while Borch (Dan) makes a

brown pickle.

So maybe because of these turn-offs blokes were missing games and we could never get a settled side. But the thought was always there that if we could get our best side on the park we could still win the comp.

After an up and down season it all came down to the final round. An outright win gets us in the finals. I must be honest – I thought we were no chance. But from the first ball of the game we had 10 committed blokes (Harry was committing to a wedding) work hard on giving it their best shot. We got the outright and for the first time all year we were in the 4.

That last game gave us a great boost into finals where we played some great finals cricket. It wasn’t pretty at times (as my teammates love to point out – a lot), but we fought hard as a team and as individuals and played as good a cricket as we’ve played for the last 2 years.

In the Semi Final we fought back hard from bad positions on both days to win in great style. There were some great performances from Woody & Glenny, but as a team we had an attitude that weekend where we weren’t going to accept losing. In the Prelim we crushed a side that we were clearly better than and we knew it. Normally knowing it is our downfall, but we kept that hard working attitude from the

Page 15: chirnsideparkcc.vic.cricket.com.auchirnsideparkcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/898/files... · Web viewIt is with some sadness that I present my President's report for the Chirnside Park

week before which allowed us to pull their pants down on their home deck. Special mention to Cameo, Glenny & Woody on playing crucial roles in the win.

Although the result of the Grand Final was shattering, we played that Sunday as hard as we could and left nothing on the sidelines. We bowled and fielded better than any day all year and I’m very proud of everyone who represented our club that weekend.

If we can somehow channel even close to the same committed attitude into and during next season we may just get that medal that has eluded us the last couple of years.

I should single out and congratulate our very own Bradman (Troy Harris) on a great season. He has taken out the comp bowling average – even though he has probably told you all about it by now. He also won our vote count, and took a handy 7/14 in the last round to help us into the finals. Not a bad year mate.

If I could single out one other player for special mention it would have to be Woody. It was his first crack at 2nd XI cricket and he made it look easy at times. He is a great kid to have in the team and has a bright future at the club.

Big thanks to Mum & Mark Hardy for helping with our arvo teas and drinks all season long. We are always getting complimented on how good our cordial is so great job.

Now I realise that I have very little respect amongst my teammates so I won’t thank you for your support, all I’ll say is f*#k you – you guys cost me a dangler!

Hope you all have a good night, and maybe come out later tonight to see Wheelsy try and grab a granny next door.

Cheers

THIRD XI SEASON REPORT

Page 20: chirnsideparkcc.vic.cricket.com.auchirnsideparkcc.vic.cricket.com.au/files/898/files... · Web viewIt is with some sadness that I present my President's report for the Chirnside Park

It was another solid year for the 3rd XI but unfortunately we could not get the job done at the important time of the year. I was lucky enough to take over the captaincy from Phipps after the Christmas break in which we only lost one game for the remainder of the home and away season, but fell short in the first final. It would be fair to say we very much under achieved with the calibre of players we had in for the season.

I would like to make special mention to Ryan Groma who won the bowling award, closely backed up by Big Show. Both of these guys had stellar seasons not only with the ball but also with the bat. Also well done to Ryan on his hat-trick - this was definitely the highlight for the season.

Congratulations also to Brant Groma who won the batting award. Brant had a very consistent season with the bat and thoroughly deserves his award. I would also like to thank Brant for taking over the captaincy in my absence during the finals.

Well done to Karlos for keeping the majority of the year, he did a great job behind the stumps.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Shane for coaching the club and for his ongoing support to the 3rd XI. Also a big thank you to the committee for their hard work put in throughout the season, in particular Mark Hardy, for all his efforts in a number of roles he put his hand up for.

I would also like to make mention of the 2nd XI for making the grand final. This was a massive effort and I congratulate them on this achievement.

Finally I would like to thank every single player that played in the 3rd XI this year. Fair to say we had a great time and I look forward to seeing you all next season to go one better.

Go Panthers

FOURTH XI SEASON REPORTThe one word to sum up our season is "fun".

We made the finals because our top order performed brilliantly after Xmas, namely Beau Wilson and Nathan Shaw. Our bowling was also consistent, led by Jonesy (the bowling machine) by always trying to pitch the ball up!

Well done to Jonesy for winning his first bowling average.

We consistently bowled 8 bowlers per game and over the course of the season everyone had a day out.

The 2 aspects that I'm proud of our team is the way our juniors are made to feel so welcome by everyone and the spirit of the game is always upheld towards the opposition. Because of this I'm sure we'll have another fun and successful year next season.

As for our finals campaign, Nathan Shaw summed it up best on the day with "This is a bad dream isn't it? Can we start again?!!". Well we will next season and I've enjoyed Captaining a varied and decent bunch of blokes.

Many thanks also to Mark Hardy and Sally Bennett on home match days to make playing at Chirnside Park the envy of I Grade!

I'm already missing cricket season! Can't wait until October!
