Triangulation Stations!

A lab in pinpointing the precise location of an event

Procedure:There are 10 different locations in the room that are marked 1-10. You will find a short question / situation at each location. You will be given about 15 minutes to create the puzzle for the other to solve. You should do the following. In your space, figure out where the 4 (in one case only 3!) things should go. For the item that solves the puzzle (the thing the other groups will be looking for, you are to place the correct word in this location. Please place other words nearby or in deceiving locations so it is not obvious which word is the correct answer to the secret location being described in the short problem.

After you have set up your problem, you will then go to each station created by another student and locate the correct word at the hidden spot. Record your words in the space below.

Once you are finished, unscramble what you have written down.

A correct response will be worth bonus points. Good luck!

My correct responses to each location:

1.‘X’ marks the spot!

We have intercepted the diaries of three infamous, bloodthirsty, looting pirates. They say a huge treasure was stolen and buried near their hideout. Find the

treasure!

1. Pirate Bill buried the treasure exactly four feet away from the palm tree.

2. Pirate Gertrude wrote that the treasure was hidden two feet away from the campfire.

3. Pirate Tyrone had written that the treasure was 3 feet, six inches away from the skull and crossbones.

Palm tree, campfire, skull & crossbones, treasure

2. The Deadly Bite!

Dr. Archie Ologist was out in the jungle searching for the pirates buried treasure when he was bitten by a black mamba! He managed to make it back to his lab,

but he would certainly die within minutes if he did not find the antidote. He told his three research assistants that he needed the green, red, and blue potions mixed together to make the antidote. His research assistants were none too

bright, however. They found the potions, but forgot where Dr. Archie Ologist lab was! Well, the doctor was thinking in advance! He wrote the distance to the lab

on each potion container.

1. Tom Mato found the red potion. It had a 15” marked on the label.

2. Assistant Nick Roses-Gangreen found the green potion. It had an 8” marked on the label.

3. Assistant Lou Berry found the blue potion. It had a 20” marked on the label.

Where was the doctor’s headquarters?

Red, blue, green potions, HQ

3.The Alliterate Affluent

Patty the Penguin planned a party. Planned at the party, Patty played a prank on the pests present. A piercing, perilous pop, produced by Patty, perturbed the party-goers. Pests of all prototypes and persuasions parted the party pronto. Police promptly pursued Patty for perturbing the public. Police pondered the

place of the party…

The police found the following critters and found out that…

1. Sidney, the snail, slid seventeen inches from the shindig.

2. Francis, the frog, frolicked fifteen inches from the festivity.

3. Bernie the Bird batted about thirteen inches from the bash.

Where was the party?

Bat, frog, bird, party

4.

Ant Baseball

Over the last three years, the neighborhood ants have had lots of baseball games. They decided to put together a baseball record book of events. One of the

records was longest ball ever hit. Harmon, Herman, and Hank decided to see who could hit the ball the farthest. All of the ants were told to hit the ball from the

stamp they were using for home plate.

1. Herman hit the ball in the direction of the soup can. The soup can was 2 feet, 8 inches away.

2. Harmon hit the ball toward the Twinkie wrapper which was exactly three feet away.

3. Hank hit the ball toward the marble. The marble was 2 feet, 5 inches away.

One day the wind picked up and blew dust everywhere, covering their home plate! Based on the information above, can you locate home plate, so the games

can begin again?

Stamp, marble, soup can, Twinkie

5. Ring Thief

Ferdinand really wants to get married, but recently the ring was stolen! One day, he received a ransom note for the ring which read, “If you ever want to see your ring again, I will need 2496 Cheerios! Divide them up equally and deliver them to

these three locations!” The hints for the locations were also given.

1. Place the first load 9 inches away from the stone.

2. The second delivery should be made 14 inches away from the mushroom.

3. The last delivery, I would like made 4 feet away from the tree stump!

After consideration, the police arrested the Bartholomew, the Bumble Bee for stealing the ring. They recognized that all three deliveries were going to the same

location – the bee’s home.

Where is the Bart’s home?

Honeycomb, stone, mushroom, stump

6. GPS Debacle!

A GPS system requires 3 satellites in order to operate correctly. A phone call was made by a kidnapper and the cell phone location was traced using GPS system.

Unfortunately, the third satellite was not working at the time, and only two satellites picked up the kidnappers signal. The police decided to split their forces

into two groups and send half of the cops to one location and the other half to the other location. Here is the information they received from the satellites.

1. Satellite number one recorded the cell phone signal and estimated that the phone was 5 feet, 9 inches away.

2. Satellite number one recorded the cell phone signal and estimated that the phone was 3 feet, 11 inches away.

Where are the possible locations of the kidnapper’s whereabouts? (you will need to get two words here!)

Satellite #1, Satellite #2, Kidnapper

7. The Great Escape

Three animals escaped from one of the town’s many zoos, but they do not know which zoo the animals escaped from! They do know that the animals escaped precisely at 10:00 pm. Look at the following information and identify the zoo

from which the animals came so they can quickly be returned!

1. The cheetah was captured at 10:04. A cheetah can run 1 foot, six inches every minute. Assume the cheetah ran continuously since the time of escape and that it

ran in a straight line.

2. The gorilla can run one-sixth the speed of the cheetah.

3. The aardvark is twice as fast as the gorilla.

Where is the zoo?

1. One galaxy has travelled 88 cm since it was created out of the singularity.

3. There is a third galaxy that has travelled 182 cm since it was created out of the singularity.

1. Limo #1 could only travel 30 cm per minute.

10. Lead-foot Lucy

On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, Lucy was pulled over for driving too fast. Each time the police officer asked her what she was doing and her responses can be found below. After the third day, the officer gave her a citation to appear in court. She failed to show up in court! Based on the information below, can you

find out where Lead-foot Lucy worked?

1. Recorded speed was 3 inches per minute, time spotted and pulled over 3:20. Lucy said, “I left work precisely at 3:00.”

2. Recorded speed was 6 inches per minute, time spotted and pulled over 3:13. Lucy said, “I left work precisely at 3:08.”

3. Recorded speed was 2.5 inches per minute, time spotted and pulled over 3:15. Lucy said, “I left work precisely at 3:03.”
