Computer History Question Nathan Lam 8A I.T.Earlier computer inventions

Abacus- The abacus is an earlier computer technology that is basically the early calculator used very early. Even before calculators were made. It is a wooden rack with lots of beads and has many different combinations to figure out math problems.

Pascaline- The pascaline is a more advanced calculator that uses buttons and switches instead of beads in the abacus. It can only add and subtract.

Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine, and Analytical Engine- This engine is the earliest invention that is closest to the computer. It can do any type of thing a calculator can do. Only the regular though. Not the scientific calculator though.

Herman Hollerith (Punched Card) - This card is for commanding and doing most of all the commands of a computer.

First-Generation Computers (1941-1956)

1. How do first-generation computers differ from earlier computers?

First generation computers are different from other earlier computers because they have real circuit boards and are made form more of metal materials and also larger while the earlier inventions are smaller and also made more of wood and less complex.

V.S.

Colossus- The colossus was the first computer that was able to be programed and also digital.

ENIAC- This was the first electronic general computer that can do commands. Such as solving math problems.

EDVAC- The EDVAC is the next generation of the ENIAC except that it is improved and it can also store memory internally.

UNIVAC- The UNIVAC is a computer that is even better than the EDVAC. It can

run faster and it can also store more memory. The computer is a bunch of computers put together.

Second generation computers (1956-1963)

How do second generation computers differ from first?

The one big difference of the computers is that the second generation computers use a new tube like material called transistors which were cheaper and also better. The other smaller and more recognizable difference is that they are faster and more improved than the ones before.

Third generation computers (1964-1971)

How do third generation computers differ from second?

The difference between the third generation computers and second is that small microchips were made for the computers that increased the speed dramatically and the development of the integrated circuit is finalized. The second gen computers did not have this.

Fourth generation computers (1971-present)

Altair 8800- The Altair 8800 was the first computer that was able to be bought from stores that you didn’t need to build. This computer can do very complicated

calculations.

Apple 1 and Apple 2- The Apple 1 and 2 were both very complex personal computers. Apple 1 had no monitor while Apple 2 had one. The Apple 2 was more of a personal computer than the Apple 1 though. The Apple 2 was mostly used for complex calculations.

Macintosh- The Macintosh is a special computer that was made by Steve jobs. It is considered to be the first successful to use a GUI (Graphic User Interface). It is like The Apple 2 but with higher speed memory and also a mouse.

IBM PC- The IBM PC is the first PC and is a powerful computer for its time. It can do commands and can also do calculations. This computer can also be inserted with multiple CD’s at a time. It was a successful computer

How do fourth generation computers differ from third?

The difference is that the fourth gen computers have monitors and that they are also more personal computers not calculators.

Fifth generation computers (present-beyond)

I Pod/I Pad/ I Phone- These devices made by apple are fast and hold high amounts of memory. They run on i0s and they have and HD screen and have a small motherboard and also are portable. They are new gen computers that are portable.

Android Phones- These phones are like the I Phones except they run on android platforms such as android Kit Kat 4.4.

Google glasses- Google glasses is the new era of technology which is basically glasses which let you surf internet message and much more

PS4- The PS4 is a new type of evolved gaming console that lets you play a various amount of games. You can even connect it with your PSVITA it is made by Sony.

What would new technology look like? New technology would be so futuristic it would have holograms instead of monitors and also new type of fast processors. Everything would be light.
