ASSIGNMENT INTRODUCTION The ability to access and use information is probably one of the most critical skills required in engineering. This unit will enable learners to understand how to make effective use of textual, numeric and graphical information when working with engineering drawings, technical manuals, reference tables, specifications, charts or electronic displays, in accordance with approved procedures. Learners will consider how best to extract information from engineering drawings and related documents and also how to use drawings and related documentation to establish the work that needs to be done, carry out the work requirements and check their own work output. A good, well-documented product, is generally more useful and more successful than an excellent product that has been poorly documented. But simply creating engineering drawings and recording engineering data is insufficient. To be useful, engineering drawings and related documentation must be stored, reviewed and approved, published and maintained. Document control for engineering drawings comprises document attributes as well as a clearly defined control process.

This unit will enable learners to identify, work within and comply with appropriate organisational policies and procedures for obtaining and using the documentation that applies to given activities. It is expected that learners will be able do this with minimum supervision, taking responsibility for their own actions and the quality and accuracy of the work that they undertake.

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

You are a recently qualified Engineer now working for a Small company that makes products for an Engineering Merchants

You have been asked to prototype an idea for a clamping device.

In this assignment brief you are required to show that you are able to identify and obtain correct drawings, read these drawings and job instruction cards in order to go onto manufacture the clamping device. Complete any necessary production information such as log book write ups or job cards.

At various stages during the manufacture of the clamping device your tutor may ask you various questions in order to make sure that you are able to use Engineering Information effectively, your tutor will make observation records and witness statements in order to verify that you are able to do this.

You are also required to describe the care control procedures in relation to the drawings and documentation you used when manufacturing the clamping device. In order to achieve the merit criteria you must look at the way drawings and other documents are kept ion school and suggest ways in which this could be improved justifying your suggestions.

TASK ONE (P3) Engineering Drawings and Instructions

You are to begin this project by obtaining all the required engineering drawings and work procedures you need to manufacture the product

You will need to access the system, locate the drawings and procedures ensure that they are the latest issue numbers, i.e. if there are three drawings the latest issue will be Iss 3 and then print them. Below is the directory address to find the drawings and procedures,

‘Public drive’_BTEC ENGINEERING_ENGINEERING DRAWINGS_G_CLAMP

Attach the drawings and instruction cards you have obtained to this assignment booklet.

TASK TWO (P1 part) Manufacture

You are to begin by selecting the appropriate material to manufacture the product, you will then be required to correctly complete a materials request form (found on the companies computer system) and pass this onto the materials stores department who will process the request and give you the materials required.

(Top tip, the material details are usually found on the engineering drawings).

Once you have obtained your materials you are then to work through the work procedures and following the engineering drawings you are to manufacture the product to the required company standards as shown on the engineering drawings. You are to complete the materials request form attached to this assignment brief.

Attach any evidence of your process of manufacture, such as photograph, in the space provided.

Your teacher will provide you with observation records at milestone stages during this project provided criteria has been met

TASK THREE (P4) Manufacturing Operations

You are to complete this assignment by completing a log book write up. It is important that you are able to identify the key manufacturing stages in the project and that you identify the Health and safety issues you were presented with during manufacture, for example, when using the pillar drill did you need to wear any PPE (personal protective equipment) such as safety glasses?

Using the template provided complete a job card for at ONE part of the clamping device assembly

Using the log book template sheet attached to this assignment brief, write a log book write up of the key stages of manufacture.

TASK FOUR (P5) Care & Control of Drawings & Documentation

Engineering drawings must always be kept in a controlled environment away from dust, oil and grease, most companies keep drawings in cabinets and usually, where a large number of drawings are kept, a ‘technical library’ is created and a person appointed to be responsible for this. Due to the high volume of drawings, your company now keeps all Engineering drawings on a computer system.

Explain why it is important that relevant care and control procedures are in place and kept where Engineering drawings are used and state how you maintained these procedures in producing the G clamp.

TASK FIVE (M2) Improvements to the care & control of drawings & documentation

Look at how drawings and instruction cards are stored in school, what condition where the drawings in that you used? Using the writing provided, describe any improvements that can be made to improve the condition of drawings and related documentation.
