Maples, oaks, and evergreens line the walk-ways between classroom buildings. A flock of friendly ducks splashes around in our pond. Picnic tables offer a place to unwind between lectures. It’s hard to believe this 105-acre oasis is just a 40-minute drive from downtown Pittsburgh. It’s not just the scenic campus that attracts students. Small class sizes, a close-knit community, award-winning faculty, and access to the Big Ten network are just some of the top reasons students choose to start (or complete) their Penn State education here.

During her final internship presentation at Newark element14 in Chicago, business major Liz Pompe was reminded what it means to be a Penn Stater.
“I introduced myself and said, ‘I go to Penn State Beaver.’ And the company president yelled, ‘WE ARE!’ I responded: ‘PENN STATE!’”
Penn State Beaver prepared Liz on many levels for her marketing internship at the international electronics company. Through her work with THON, the annual dance marathon supporting pediatric cancer research, she learned to effectively manage time, communicate, organize, and delegate, adding to THON’s success. “It’s an incredible feeling to make such an impact,” she says. In the classroom, she learned management and marketing skills, applying them to her internship and beyond.
Liz’s internship assignment was to roll out a new project management system. She was so successful that the Newark element14 hired her to work part-time from home while finishing her degree at Penn State Beaver. And her boss told her: “When you’re ready to look for a full-time job, don’t talk to anyone before you talk to us.”

Basketball is a big part of Tiere Phillps’ life. The Pittsburgh native has been playing since he was in middle school. It’s natural that he’d look for the collegiate “sweet spot”—a place with both an outstanding academic reputation and strong athletics program.
Tiere transferred to Penn State Beaver in 2013 from another Pittsburgh-area university to study administration of justice and join what he calls the “best basketball program in western Pennsylvania.” In his first year, the team placed second in the USCAA National Championship Division II Tournament, finishing the season 22-8.
“Being a student athlete really helps with time management and motivation,” he says. “Plus, you have to make good grades to stay eligible to play,” he adds with a laugh.
The forward has high aspirations, including making the dean’s list and, after graduation, possibly studying for a law degree or a master’s in political science. He’s confident that Penn State Beaver has equipped him to handle the challenges.
His advice for future student athletes? “You have to attack head on. You can’t procrastinate.”

More than Winning
Sure, winning is important, but not more important than good sports-
manship and integrity. As an athlete, you’ll work hard and play hard,
and you’ll develop skills necessary for success after college, like leader-
ship, teamwork, and time management.

Penn State graduates were ranked #1 by corporate recruiters in a
recent Wall Street Journal poll. Why? Because our students are educat-
ed, engaged, and experienced. In the classroom, students aren’t review-
ing outdated case studies. They’re solving real-world problems. Outside
the classroom, students can further sharpen their skills by participating
in undergraduate research and internships. Whether you spend two or
four years at Beaver, the outcome will be the same. You will earn a
respected degree and join one of the most powerful alumni bodies in
the world.

Brodie Schultz credits his four internship offers to his two years at Penn State Beaver before moving to University Park to finish his mechanical engineering degree.
He worked on several team projects during his freshman and sophomore years. “That really helped us see what it was like if you were working in industry,” he says. “We had to go out and talk to the community and really use all the skills that we had learned in the classroom.”
The personalized attention he got from his adviser, James Hendrickson, instructor in engineering, also contributed to his success by helping him choose the right path.
“I could talk to my adviser anytime. I could walk into his office and spend half an hour, and that wasn’t a problem,” Brodie says. “It’s sometimes hard to find somebody like that.”
Brodie chose an internship in Ford Motor Company’s Product Development Center in Dearborn, Mich. “They treated me like a regular engineer, not a student. They never made me feel left out.”

“I COULD TALKTO MY ADVISERANY TIME.”“
”
IF I COULDCHOOSE AGAIN, I WOULD
STILL CHOOSE BEAVER.”
Claire (Wenjiao) Wang knew since high school that she wanted to attend Penn State, but she didn’t know she would have so many options.
The enterprise risk management major from Xi’an, China, had concerns about start-ing at Penn State University Park because of its large size. An admissions counselor explained that through Penn State’s 2+2 program, students can begin their education at a smaller campus before moving on to University Park. Claire decided to start her degree at Penn State Beaver.
She maintains an excellent grade-point average and appreciates working with the faculty. “My professors know my strengths and weaknesses, and help me learn.”
She has joined several organizations, including THON, Lion Ambassadors, and Inter-national Student Association, a group she co-founded—and she’s a resident assistant.
Claire is confident about her decision. “If I could choose again, I would still choose Beaver.”
