IPS Case Study —Electrical ComponentsAging and Obsolescence of electrical components, such as control switches, relays, breakers, solenoid valves, and electronic modules continues to become a major concern in the United States. To avoid costly down time, AREVA can work with your Procurement and System Engineering organization to identify critical-to-generation components that are no longer available and have no spares in stock.
Our engineers can identify the critical characteristics for the obsolete components and recommend suitable replacements from our Nuclear Parts Center as well as other suppliers. We also have the in-house capability to re-engineer electronic modules, if needed. Our Commercial Grade Dedication engineers can qualify the recommended replacement components, and our new Technical Center allows us to do our own qualification testing in-house, saving time and money.
We can perform a technical evaluation for the recommended component with suitable documentation to be used in a modification package by your engineering team, or we can offer a full modification option using our experienced in-house engineering organization using your forms and procedures under our QA program.
AREVA can offer cradle-to-grave solutions forour electrical and mechanical component obsolescence challenges.

Continuous Monitoring of Core PerformancePlant operators need fixed incore detector systems with the ability to enhance reactor operation through continuous, real-time monitoring of actual core conditions in B&W, Westinghouse, and Combustion Engineering pressurized water reactors. AREVA’s simple, reliable monitoring system provides 24-hour monitoring and on-line assessment of actual core safety limits with a real-time display. This increases the overall guidance available to operators and improves the ability to navigate transient conditions and to detect and diagnose core anomalies.
Compared to movable incore detector systems, which acquire only periodic “snapshot” power distributions, fixed incore detector systems, with full-time monitoring, can expand the allowable operating window and improve reactor operating margin. The continuous monitoring feature of AREVA’s fixed incore system allows utilities to safely operate closer to reactor limits, providing a 10- to 15-percent increase in operating margin in some plants. In contrast, movable incore detector systems, with fuel performance measurement approximately once per month, rely on forecast conditions to determine core operating limits, resulting in unnecessarily restrictive limits.
High Reliability and Less Maintenance AREVA’s fixed incore detectors are highly reliable due to their inherently simple design with no moving parts or need for an external power supply. The fixed incore system eliminates movable components such as the channel selectors, drive units and manual isolation valves, along with associated mechanical and electrical problems. Less maintenance means reduced cost and reduced radiation exposure to maintenance personnel.
Customized Core Monitoring Solutions AREVA can configure fixed incore detector assemblies to a utility’s specifications. Plus, the assemblies can be positioned in the reactor core through the existing instrumentation guide tubes. The basic fixed incore detector assemblies contain rhodium emitters. A computer work station and specialized AREVA software eliminate the need for many of the collateral hardware, software and electronic devices required for movable incore detector systems.

Rhodium Incore Detector Assembly A typical fixed rhodium detector assembly consists of an outer inconel sheath containing five to seven rhodium detectors (depending on the application) and a thermocouple. The rhodium emitters are approximately 16 inches long and are positioned within the assembly so that their emitters are between fuel spacer grids.
The rhodium detector system delivers a full-core power map approximately every six minutes.

From the moment of start-up, this plant was plagued by an oil leak issue. Thirty-three years later, one new stator, a redesigned oil lift system and a brand new oil enclosure — designed, fabricated and installed by AREVA — and the leak was fi xed. Top that off with a level one coating of safety-related paint performed at the P&MSC, and concerns about meeting Appendix R Fire Protection requirements — gone.
