The General Audience of Pope Benedict XVI
on Wednesday December 5, 2012
Dear Brothers and Sisters, In this Year of Faith, we begin the Advent season by reflecting on the grandeur of God’s plan for our
salvation. The great hymn which begins Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians praises the merciful love with which God “chose us in Christ, before the
foundation of the world” (Eph1:4) to become his adopted sons and daughters. God’s plan is to unite all things in Christ, bringing all creation to fullness
in him. He has made this plan known to us through an economy of revelation which culminates in the incarnation of the Son and the outpouring of the
Holy Spirit. God’s self-revelation in Christ corresponds to our deepest human hopes and aspirations, and it invites us to respond by offering God the obedience of faith. As our free assent of
mind and will to divine revelation, faith calls us to conversion and brings a new way of seeing the reality of our lives and the world around us. During
this Advent, may we contemplate ever more fully the beauty of God’s loving plan, and strive to be living signs of his saving presence in our world.

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God”. (Luke 3:1-6)

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
Of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturday December 8th
“In order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne
by God’s grace. Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, ‘full of grace’ through God, was redeemed from the
moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854. The most Blessed Virgin
Mary was, from the moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Saviour of the
human race, preserved Immune from all stain of original sin.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church #490-491). The Church teaches that because Mary was chosen to bear the Son of God within her womb,
she herself was free from the stain of sin from the moment of her conception. Mary is the perfect Advent model for us. Let us pray that, in imitation
of her faithfulness, we too may say “yes” to God’s invitation to bring Christ to the world.
During the Second Sunday of Advent we light two
candles on our Advent Wreath. The first candle on
our Advent Wreath represents hope and the second
candle signifies Peace.
As we light this candle, we pray:
Stir up our hearts, O Lord,
to prepare the paths of your Only-begotten Son:
that we may worthily serve you
with hearts purified by His coming:
Who lives and reigns with God the Father in the
unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen
Your 2013 Collection Envelopes will be ready for pickup at the Church next weekend. The numbers have been reassigned and all boxes are in alphabetical order. Please look for the last name carefully to ensure you take yours home with you. If your name is not found and would like to get one please inform Fr.Paul or call the office. We encourage every family to use church envelops for all their contributions. It will help us maintain accounts and give you tax receipts.
Preparing Our Church for Christmas
Volunteers are needed to help decorate the church for Christmas. If you are interested,
please contact the parish office to let us know. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Who can become a Eucharistic Minister? Eucharistic Ministers should be Catholics who are in Communion with the Church; meaning, they are confirmed and if married, married in the catholic church and practicing the Catholic Faith. Holy Communion ministers are to assist the priest to distribute Holy Communion at weekend Masses and to take Holy Communion to the sick or the homebound. They also help the pastor to set up for Mass on Sundays and special occasions. They are role models for children at the altar.
Advent Reconciliation on Sunday Dec.23rd, 6.30pm. Other priests
are also available to help us. Please plan to celebrate.
What are the ‘O Antiphons’ by Fr. W. Saunders
The “O Antiphons” refer to the seven antiphons that
are recited (or chanted) preceding the Magnificat
during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. They
cover the special period of Advent preparation known
as the Octave before Christmas, Dec. 17-23, with
Dec. 24 being Christmas Eve and Vespers for that
evening being for the Christmas Vigil. In some fashion
the “O Antiphons” have been part of our liturgical
tradition since the very early Church. The importance of “O Antiphons” is twofold: Each one
highlights a title for the Messiah: O Sapientia (O
Wisdom), O Adonai (O Lord), O Radix Jesse (O Root
of Jesse), O Clavis David (O Key of David), O
Oriens (O Rising Sun), O Rex Gentium (O King of the
Nations), and O Emmanuel. Also, each one refers to
the prophecy of Isaiah of the coming of the Messiah.
Let’s now look at each antiphon with just a sample of
Isaiah’s related prophecies. (to be continued)
