Well- the referendum has passed us by, and the result is known. What remains to be seen is how the decision will work out in the longer term. As I write this article against a deadline a week in advance of the actual vote I am still praying, thinking, and reading my way through the massive amount of literature and information. Benchmarking this against my experience in Ireland and the impact of the EU on a very impoverished nation in the 1970’s, my deep interest in history and my Christian faith is not easy. Europe was broken beyond description by war, and the EU was created to help pave the way towards a society where the horrors of two consecutive wars would not have to be faced for a 3rd time. As a child and young teenager in a Dublin beset by violence and a country separated by religious and political division, this seemed a pretty good reason for Ireland to be part of something that just might encourage nations to be ‘good neighbours’ opening the doors for whole nations to offer respect, mercy and love to the stranger, even to an enemy. And we have enjoyed relative peace on European soil for the years between. We have witnessed the breaking down of the Berlin Wall and reunification of East and West Germany, and the Peace Accord signed in 1997 has brought great and powerful positive change to Northern Ireland and by default all of us. Did you know Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley were nicknamed the chuckle brothers? And none of us who knew the violence ever believed we might see a day when these two sworn enemies worked side by side for a brighter future.

Archbishop Justin Welby in a pre-referendum article wrote these words

The vision for our future cannot be only about ourselves. We are most human when we exist for others.

That decision has now been made and half the voting population of the country will be disappointed in the outcome one way or another ! What remains before us is what we make of the future whether we are in or out. It is true to say that the original EU vision is very hard to see in the EU as it exists now – perhaps the vote could be a catalyst for radical overhaul and rethinking of how the EU functions? ‘OUT’ could also mean out with what isn’t fair, just or working for those who have the least. It is also true to say that should we now be OUT of the EU the economic prosperity of the country could be difficult in the short and medium term – so how do we ensure and secure some kind of hope for the least well off who will inevitably struggle? Might an Out vote result in more people being ‘IN’ – involved, invested in, included? And might some of these be immigrants, bringing skills we need, commitment to becoming British, adding to our wealth of culture , education, medicine, the arts, supporting our transport systems, hospitals, road and building projects and industry as generations of immigrants have done before them? I am waiting with hope to see if post referendum we can once more come together as a united people, to continue to foster and encourage the best of British attitudes and culture , rooted so deeply in our Christian heritage. Whatever the outcome we need modern day prophets to see the possibilities offered by change and put the welfare of others before self interest. The true outcome for the referendum will be what we as human beings make of it and how we approach the winning or the loosing. A win for one side of the debate does not have to be an automatic loose for others if generosity of spirit and willingness to move forward together prevail.

We are considering producing a 2017 calendar with photographs of beautiful and/or interesting views in our respective villages south of the A4. We would also be interested in talking with anyone who would volunteer to liaise on the production of such a calendar for us. CABBAGE SUNDAY SUNDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER

AT AVEBURY CLUB STARTING 12.30

Cabbage Sunday is an auction which raises funds for local charities which this year are Wiltshire Air Ambulance, St Julia’s Hospice, Devizes and Kennet Community Transport

The items are not all of particularly high value so there will be something to suit all pockets and ages.

Your support on the day is invaluable but we also need your help with donations. Hopefully these will include garden produce; preserves, pickles, wines; unwanted gifts, toys/games and the ever popular homemade cakes.

Donations towards the “booze hamper” would be most welcome.

So bring the family along for a good time and help raise money for local charities.

Hot Dogs and Burgers for sale with drinks available from the Club.

Contact: Nigel Fielder 01672 539317 or Steve and Thelma Fulford on 01672 539308 with your kind donations.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE DAY

Stand up and be counted! Put yourself and the support you lend to your local community on the new Wiltshire Roadmap for Dementia. Are you a volunteer driver? Do you pop into your neighbour’s just to see if they’re ok? Do you walk a friend’s dog? Do you run a small business such a mobile hairdresser that goes the extra mile to support customers with

special needs? If you are one of those unsung heroes of our

communities, please step forward and let us know. Anyone who helps out informally, or who runs a group or business that might be helpful for people living with dementia, is invited to be included. The roadmap aims to recognise all the very local support that is outside the officially provided services.

The roadmap is being created by a team from local charities Alzheimer’s Support, Alzheimer’s Society, AgeUk Wiltshire, Healthwatch Wiltshire and Wiltshire Council.

It’s free to be included. To get on the map please email [email protected] or call 01225 776481.

Avebury Parish Council Headlines from Avebury Parish Council’s

meeting on 7 June 2016 Membership: We decided to co-opt Terence O’Connor to the Parish Council and we look forward to welcoming him to our next meeting. Terence and his family live in the High Street. Planning application: We supported an application for external lighting at the Waggon and Horses subject to the applicant reviewing the likely effects of light pollution and the need to enhance ‘dark skies’. Consultation on extending the 30 mph limit on the Swindon Road: We will be writ ing to support of our application to extend the 30mph limit 200m northwards on the Swindon Road. A4 improvements at Beckhampton and West Kennett: We have heard that a quotation for fees for the second stage of the feasibility study will be obtained once Highways has removed its current backlog of work in two or three months’ time. Parking in Trusloe: We will be discussing a planning report provided by Aster’s consultants at our next meeting and hope to have a meeting with Centurion Western in the near future. Sportsfield lease renewal: We decided to set up a small Task and Finish Group of Parish Council and ACSReC members to consider terms for the renewal of the Sportsfield lease and to make recommendations to the Parish Council. Mains water supply to Pavilion: Contractors have laid a new main water pipe to the Pavilion and have completed plumbing inside the building. Thames Water is due to connect our new pipe-work to their 6” main in the near future and the Pavilion will then have a mains water supply. National Trust Update: We have been pleased to set up a standing item on our agenda for regular dialogue between the National Trust and the Parish Council. Mrs Jan Tomlin (General Manager, Wiltshire Landscape) said the Trust has decided to run two community meetings a year, alternating between daytime and evenings. The next one will be on Tuesday 25 October in the day time. She also reported that: The Trust is organising a bus on the morning of 10 August for

local people interested in archaeology to visit the excavation at Durrington Walls near Stonehenge. Please contact Katherine Ryan at the Trust on 538 011 for tickets.

Following works to an archway, the Coach House in the High Street should be open for Solstice but it will then be closed again for refurbishment later in the year.

Box blight has devastated the box plants in the Manor Garden.

The Trust has plans to replace the freestanding sign outside the Manor with an oak framed sign on the wall.

The Manor House boiler system needs to be replaced at great expense.

The Trust is working closely on ideas for Avebury Day with the AD committee.

Avebury Day will be on 10 September and letters have been sent to residents in the Parish inviting them to the residents' lunch. Contact [email protected] for tickets. Parking permits for Solstice: The Parish Council will have issued permits to people who normally park their cars on the highway by the time this edition of UKN comes out. Community Litter Pick on 28 May: 10 large bin bags were filled and we thanked Zandria Service for initiating the event. Date of next meeting: 7:30pm on Tuesday 5 July 2016 at the Social Centre.

Open Farm Sunday

Thank You!

On Sunday 5th June we joined nearly 400 farms across the country and opened our gates

at Manor Farm, Avebury Trusloe to visitors. With the weather on our side, we welcomed over 1400 people to the farm. There were many volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly. It was a huge success of which we wanted to thank all who attended and supported us. A big thank you must go to Suzie Swanton of North Farm, West Overton, who gave many hours of her time in the preparations for the event and on the day. We could not have done it without you!

Visitors experienced a range of activities from tractor and trailer rides, sheep shearing, educational activities, farm machinery display, assault course, local produce markets, and an awful lot more! We were raising money via donations and a raffle for The Marlborough Downs Space for Nature Project, encouraging and promoting conservation amongst a group of over 20 farmers in the local area.

Next year’s event will be held on Sunday 11th June 2017 at a location to be confirmed.

Winterbourne Monkton and Berwick Bassett Queen’s 90th Birthday Tea.

Villagers of Berwick Bassett and Winterbourne Monkton assembled last Sunday afternoon to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday. Thanks to the generosity of a number of local donors the almost 70 guests celebrated in an imposing and patriotically decorated marquee. Major David Harris proposed the loyal toast which was washed down with liberal quantities of excellent fizz. A sumptuous tea was provided by the ladies (and some gentlemen as well…!) of the two villages, presenting a mouth-watering array of strawberry scones and so many different cakes that all but a few teenagers were quite unable to sample them all.

As if there weren’t enough cakes for tea, the highlight of the afternoon was a bake-off competition which attracted a large number of high calory and ornately decorated birthday cakes,

To everyones’ amazement, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood (aka Rev Maria Shepherdson and Mark Saunders) arrived to judge the bake-off. Initially they were challenged gastronomically by the number of entries, including a a royal corgi cake for dogs. This was sniffed cautiously by our distinguished judges who then passed on hurriedly to the more inviting entries. Wooden spoon prizes were awarded to the category winners, and our famous guests departed for their next engagement.

A great, and very (ful-)filling time was had by all, and we would like to thank all our sponsors for their support, and all our fellow villagers for the cakes and help, and of course for coming!

NEWS FROM THE TOWER Ringing Times: July 3rd &10th 9.30am to 10.00am July 24th 5.30pm to 6.00pm Practice Nights: Tuesdays 7.30 pm - 9.00 pm. Peal Attempt: Saturday, 23rd July starting at 3.30pm. There was a successful quarter peal on Saturday, 21st May. The unusual method was called Aileen’s Little Bob Major. On the same day, the band went on to ring a quarter peal of Kent Triples at Calne another of St. Helena Bob Triples at Marlborough, for the feast day of St. Helena and finally Hereward Bob Major at Bishops Cannings. The bells were rung for Camilla Hues and Michael Kipling, who were married at Avebury on 11th June, 2016. We wish them a very happy life together. Ringers and organists are in great demand at this time of the year and many rush from one church to another to ring or play for weddings. Brides are often late which makes it very difficult. Fortunately Milly had perfect timing, which enabled the organist to be at Yatesbury to play for the Branch meeting service, led by Revd Philip Bromiley, which followed the Striking Competition. New rules for the competition meant that each team had to ring the same set tests. Bromham came first with the least number of faults. The competition was judged by the new Guild President, Judith Williamson. There will be a full PEAL ATTEMPT on 23rd July starting at 3.30 pm.

NaDonal Trust News Welcome to the first of our regular updates in the Upper Kennet News. Firstly, a massive thank you to everyone who came to the meeting between residents and National Trust staff on the 19th May, and to Rev’d Maria Shepherdson who kindly opened the doors of St James’s to welcome us all. It has become clear that we need to change the way that we communicate with those living in Avebury Parish, by sharing news with residents directly. To this end, and as suggested at the meeting, we will be putting regular articles in the Upper Kennet News, along with newsletters which will come straight through your letterboxes four times a year. Following the really positive feedback from the meeting in May we will also be inviting you to similar meetings twice a year, for a chat, face to face, over coffee and cake. And of course, you are always welcome to contact the team directly at any time. With such a large, diverse and complex portfolio of special sites to look after, the team are constantly busy and haven’t perhaps always shared enough about how much we do to conserve our sites, and also to support the local community. There isn’t enough space here to cover as much as we would like to, but here are some points that may be of interest (in no particular order) and we will address more as time goes on. Avebury Visit-Makers: You might

have noticed more volunteers in the henge lately. Research & feedback shows that most visitors to Avebury do not want to see signs and notices everywhere but instead enjoy the fact that they are free to experience Avebury in their own individual way. Therefore, instead of signs, we have introduced friendly, knowledgeable volunteers, the ‘Visit-Makers’, who are there to answer visitors’ queries and offer information and assistance where needed. We are always looking for more volunteers so if you have some time to spare please do get in touch.

Litter-picking: Naturally, in a World Heritage Site where thousands of people come every year to see the stone circle, litter is a constant battle for everyone. Our teams have been supported in the past by the Avebury Guardians, and we were absolutely delighted to hear that a team of Avebury residents undertook their first litter pick a few weeks ago. It’s even more fantastic news that they

are hoping to make it a regular event - this will be a massive support for our Rangers in staying on top of litter issues and will help to ensure the village looks wonderful for everyone.

Free entry for residents: Don’t forget that residents of Avebury Parish have free entry to the Alexander Keiller Museum and Avebury Manor and Garden, just bring along proof of your address when you come to visit.

30th Anniversary of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites World Heritage Site: As part of the celebrations for this significant event we launched the Stonehenge and Avebury Walking Challenge, which challenges people to walk 50km over 8 walks in the WHS, to be undertaken throughout 2016. The aim is to encourage people to look beyond the stones, to explore the wider landscape and understand a little better why these sites are internationally significant. You can find out more on our website shown below.

Our activities programme: We have developed a programme of small scale visitor activities, focussing on the changing seasons and local traditions. The aim is to have something going on regularly and spread visitor numbers more evenly throughout the year. Most of the activities will be based in the farm yard or Manor to minimise the impact on the village and the monument. In the next couple of months for example, our visitors can expect storytelling events for children, yoga in the Manor Garden and a harvest market in the farm yard. Again, you can find our events on our website. We also aim to encourage more people to explore the beautiful area around Avebury and our wider Wiltshire Landscape portfolio.

National Trust Wiltshire Landscape: You may not be aware that the team who look after Avebury, also look after eleven other National Trust sites. The day to day maintenance of these sites is undertaken by a small team of Rangers, supported by teams of fabulous volunteers, working across all our outdoor sites. Just five rangers (Paul Rowland,

Peter Oliver, Keith Steggall, Lorretta Waters and Emily Tabernor, under the guidance of Hilary Makins, Countryside Manager) spread themselves all across Wiltshire looking after these beautiful places. So if you don’t see any rangers in the henge, it’s because they are attending to one of their other sites, litter picking, repairing fences, managing habitats and working with the tenant farmers to promote nature conservation. The sites and their rangers are:

• Avebury (Peter, Lorretta & Emily) • Stonehenge Landscape (Keith &

Paul) • Figsbury Ring (Lorretta) • Cley Hill (Paul) • Sutton Lane Meadows (Paul) • Lockeridge Dene and Piggledene

(Peter) • Calstone and Cherhill Downs (Keith) • White Barrow (Keith) • Pepperbox Hill (Peter) • The Coombes, Hinton Parva (Keith) • Philipps House and Dinton Park

(Paul) • Little Clarendon (Keith)

They are all special and beautiful places and well worth a visit. Each site has its own website, managed by the Avebury team. For an overview go to www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wiltshire-landscape Finally, please do come and visit us at

Kennet Valley School www.kennetvalley.wilts.sch.uk

We are delighted that the hard work of the Lockeridge village campaigners to reduce the speed to 20mph has

been successful. Our school will continue to play a part in this initiative to slow traffic down and are very grateful for the new hanging pots for our railings donated following the recent village planting event. The children have enojoyed making windmills for the grass verge to act as a traffic calming feature and this activity was used to underpin the messages around the importance of road safety.

Sport – A small group of our most sporty year 5&6 pupils represented our school brilliantly at the local primary schools Quad Kids athletics competition held at the athletics track at Marlborough College. This was based around four events - 75m, 600m, standing long jump and vortex throwing. They all took this challenge very seriously, working hard to prepare during the Wednesday afternoon PE sessions at Kennet Valley Hall as well as at home. They performed very well against some tough competition and mostly year 6 pupils. Every one of our team demonstrated great determination and team spirit. I am proud to report they came in a very well-deserved 6th position out of 15 teams. Our best ever school result at this competition!

We are hoping to be able to have a sunny sports day on 28th June, where we are planning fun events and traditional races. This year as a result of our PE lessons at the Kennet Valley Hall we will be including some longer distance running.

Music – Kennet Valley’s Got Talent! This year we will be celebrating our children’s musical talents over a week of special celebration sharing assemblies every morning. This will include a vast array of talents learnt both in and out of school across all age groups.

Jemima Osborne (7yrs) has started learning the cello and she’s off to a great start – very well done Jemima!

Our senior pupils have an opera workshop to look forward to shortly. This will be a new and exciting opportunity for this class!

Special Achievements Olivia Mercer, Francesca Hutton, Amber Boyer, Tom Gittins and Jake Tutin competed in the Penguins Swimming Club Gala over two days this month and all achieved some personal bests in their races and were a great encouragement to each other. Well done to our top swimmers and also our ex-pupils who broke their records and were well positioned in the final results.

Tilly in year 5 continues to achieve amazingly success including 9 medals in a recent dance and drama competition as well being chosen to play a part in a new Landover advert! Tilly attends a music and drama group in Swindon.

New pupils – we are pleased to welcome some new families to school boosting our numbers to 101. We have many new families joining our school over the coming months alongside our September reception children who will be visiting us for several days in July to aid their transition to school. Our reception class is a happy place to be and the new starters have all coped very well at school this year and made some super progress in all aspects of learning - socially, emotionally and in line with the curriculum.

The Friends – The children had fun coming to school dressed up as kings, queens, princes and princesses, knights and corgis on 10th June to celebrate the Queen’s birthday! We all enjoyed an afternoon tea party with family, friends and villagers. Our older pupils organised some games / stalls to help raise money for school funds. As always, a great selection of homemade cakes sold very quickly! Thank you to those of you who came to join us and helped our school play an active role in village life.

The Friends will be serving teas and running some stalls at the Avebury Fun Day in September, both to support this local event and to help raise funds for school. These will be used to fund a redesign and fitting of a new kitchen area to aid cookery lessons for the children at school.

Next month - there is lo ts to look forward to including a Friends led BBQ & overnight camp, Healthy Living Week, Sports Week, another Popcorn Club (film night) and a whole school trip to Bristol Zoo. Term ends on 21st July.

Retirement – I am sure many of you will know Jenny Haines. Jenny is retiring after 42 years of commitment and dedication to the pupils, parents & staff, working for the school under its many titles. Jenny also attended East Kennet CofE School herself in her younger days. She will be greatly missed by everyone and we wish her well in the future..

Marlborough and District Embroiderers Guild

Jane O’Brien started her working life as an interior designer. She became interested in damask, a fabric which she explained originated from the city of Damascus at the end of the Silk Route. It is distinctive as it is reversible with a matt and shiny weave.

Instead of showing samples of old fabrics Jane’s presentation showed the story of damask through a series of classical paintings. She also mentioned Waddeston Manor as being an interesting house to visit for examples of damask wall papers and furnishings.

Jane concluded by showing us how she had incorporated damask into her work using images of old masters, text and damask in collage.

The next meeting of Marlborough & District Embroiderers Guild will be on Monday 4 July at the Kennet Valley Hall, Lockeridge when the speaker will be Lisa Earley and her talk will be entitled “The Nature of Mending Project & Paul Nash Piece (purchased by HQ)”. The doors will open at 13.30 for a 14.00 start. All are welcome and if you require further information please ring 01672 861658 or visit our website: marlboroughembroiderers.org for further information.

Kennet Valley 60+ June 9th saw the Club set off for the outing

to Weymouth, a good time was had by all and the weather was kind which always helps. The next outing is on 8th September which will be to The Isle of White.

The June meeting was the annual summer tea party which was held at the Hall, there was a wonderful array of food all donated by the members, a big thank you must go to Eileen and Kay for all their efforts and of course to their able helpers. Prior to the tea Dennis Lavis officiated with a quiz during which there was lively banter and a degree of competitiveness.

After the tea some of the remaining cakes were auctioned and the bid of the day went to Di Thrift who fought off stiff competition to secure a delicious homemade sponge cake, I hope it got home safely!

The next meeting will be on June 21st when

we will be visited by the mobility store, I

understand that we may be able to try out the

various aids so crash helmets at the ready,

see you then.

The Alton Talks for Autumn 2016

in aid of Alton Barnes St Mary’s Church and the

Coronation Hall to be held in the

Coronation Hall, Alton Barnes

Thursday 1 September, 7.30pm: “On a Glass Lightly” Maggie Faultless will speak about the remarkable renaissance of glass-engraving in the mid-twentieth century, largely the work of Sir Laurence Whistler and his son Simon, both of whom lived in Alton Barnes. The slides will present examples from the finest stipple work on hand-blown goblets, to the largest church window by Simon Whistler, the east window in the church at West Lavington, not far from Alton.

Thursday 13 October, 7.30pm: “The Vale of Pewsey Project: the 2016 season of archaeological investigation” Dr Jim Leary, Director of Archaeology

Field School, University of Reading will give an overview of this year’s season of archaeological investigations close to the River Avon at Marden, Wilsford and Charlton as part of the ongoing Vale of Pewsey Project, a collaborative research programme linking the Stonehenge landscape to the south with Avebury to the north. In addition to continuing excavations at Marden and Wilsford, fieldwork in 2016 will include environmental sampling and the investigation of the River Avon.

Thursday 3 November, 7.30pm: “Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa: recent research” Our speaker, Dr Robert Bewley is Project Director of the Endangered Archaeology in the Middle East and North Africa (EAMENA) Project, based in the University of Oxford. The project aim is to record, by examining aerial photography and satellite images, threatened archaeological sites and landscapes and to make information about them available. Dr Bewley was formerly Head of Aerial Survey at English Heritage; he is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the Institute of Archaeology, London and has specialist expertise as a field

archaeologist and in aerial photography. He will show, with images, how the internationally significant archaeological heritage of the Middle East and North Africa is vulnerable to such threats as agricultural practices, urban expansion, warfare and looting. He will also demonstrate how the EAMENA Project is mapping, evaluating and monitoring such sites so that they may be effectively protected in future. This work is especially important in, for example, Syria, Libya, Iraq and Yemen, where access on the ground is currently either impossible or severely restricted.

Tickets: £8 for each talk; £21 for all three talks Please send an SAE with a cheque made out to “Alton Barnes Coronation Hall”, to: Alton Talks 2016, 1 The Old Smithy, Alton Priors, Marlborough SN8 4JX. Tel. 01672 851859.
