From the Podium

R e p o r tDear Colleagues,

It was a pleasure to see many of you in Seattle and to have the opportunity to come together as a body to share and discuss ideas, hear outstanding music performed by exceptional ensembles, and enjoy one an-other’s company. CBDNA is a remarkable organization filled with intelligent, creative, and passionate people, and I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to serve you, the institution, and the students we represent as your new president.

Before sharing some ideas for consideration, I wish to thank Past President Tom Duffy for his very capable leadership and friendship. Tom is a leader one can only hope to emulate: witty, selfless, thoughtful and reflec-tive, inclusive and open to ideas, willing to empower others to develop their ideas, and every decision made with the utmost integrity. The depth and scope of our conference was an extension of Tom’s many great qualities.

Secondly, I wish to thank Tim Salzman, his graduate assistants Vu Nguyen and Erin Bodnar, and the faculty, students and staff at the University of Washington for being our host. Hosting a conference of this magnitude is one of the most valuable contributions one can make to the profession.

Finally, thank you to all of the conductors, performers, and presenters who provided the content for our confer-ence. Only one who has presented at a CBDNA National Conference can truly know the emotional, intellectual, and physical energy it takes to perform for this body!

Thinking ahead, the 2013 National Conference will be held at the University of North Carolina Greensboro from March 20-23. If you were not in Seattle you don’t want to miss the clever video provided by hosts John Locke and Kevin Geraldi. All of the 2013 Conference information (including the video) can be accessed on the website they have set up: www.cbdna2013.org.

For about the past five years I have had a gut feeling that we are at a critical juncture in our profession. Much is changing in our world; more rapidly than one could have imagined a few decades ago, and I am concerned that we remain relevant. I have no doubt about the value

of what we have been doing in CBDNA for the past several generations: namely, developing and promoting a serious artistic repertoire for winds and developing the skills needed by conductors to capably bring those works to life. Much of the energy of CBDNA has been directed in these areas and we will continue to do so. Recently, we have widened our circle to embrace our colleagues who work creatively and tirelessly with ath-letic bands, and this is a significant development. No doubt we will continue to develop in these three areas, but is it enough?

The futurists Alvin and Heidi Toffler have been writing for over 40 years about the structural changes society is undergoing. In The Third Wave (1980) and Power Shift (1990) they described three types of societies cat-egorized by the concept of waves, in which subsequent waves supplant earlier ones. From each wave developed particular kinds of institutions, economic systems, and management structures.

The First Wave society was agricultural, replacing the hunter-gatherers, in which wealth and power was de-rived directly from the land. An organized agricultural community benefitted from the formation of permanent settlements and division of labor, which enabled the development of culture.

The Second Wave was industrial where wealth and power was created through mass production, mass distribution, mass consumption, mass education, and mass media. The Second Wave favored standardization, specialization, and centralized management structures.

The Third Wave is post industrial in which wealth and(continued on page 2)

power are created by access to and control of informa-tion. Individualization and mass customization replace standardization and mass production. While specialists are needed, generalists are valued for being able to un-derstand how all the parts interrelate and for achieving synergy throughout the system. A Third Wave society best functions when information flows freely. Success-ful management structures are ones which allow the organization to be fluid and adaptable to rapid change, where information flows non-linearly, and where indi-viduals are empowered to make decisions at all levels of the organization.

Does anyone doubt we are well into this Third Wave? Through the internet we can access and share any kind of information that can be digitized. Hard copies of every type of media are being replaced by electronic means with easy, immediate access and communication is almost instantaneous with anyone on the planet who is connected by an electronic device. Access to informa-tion has been decentralized. No longer are traditional institutions such as libraries, newspapers, network tele-vision, schools, symphony orchestras, and professional organizations necessary for the general public to have access to information. In fact, individuals can access all kinds of information without it being subjected to the filters of these institutions. Leadership in the Third Wave society can be very challenging! What implications do these changes suggest for CBDNA? The answers can be many, but here are a few that come to mind. First, the power of CBDNA is best realized when its individual members actively participate in the mission of the organization. It is the responsibility of leaders in a Third Wave organization to facilitate the interchange of ideas among its members and individuals are empowered to contribute ideas to the organization. Second, our organization must con-tinually adapt to changing circumstances that include demographic shifts, educational reform, leaner bud-gets, advances in technology, and evolving patterns of communication while remaining true to our values and principles. Third, we must take an active role in shap-ing the future of K-12 music education as our nation’s schools react to full scale societal change.

I firmly believe that investing our energy in the sup-port and evolution of K-12 music education is the most powerful determinant to securing the future for college bands. Effective music education before college is critical to achieving much of what we discuss: society valuing what we do, adults continuing to seek musical opportunities, concert attendance, economic support of benchmark arts organizations, achieving diversity among our membership, and having students who con-tinue to play in our bands. It will be a high priority to create the support systems from our organization to

facilitate the necessary dialogue, sharing of ideas, and accumulation of information that will assist us in be-coming more effective leaders, advocates and mentors in our schools.

In the next edition of the CBDNA Report I will present some important information from the NEA’s Survey of Public Participation in the Arts that shows a steady decline in childhood arts education since 1982; most profoundly for African American and Hispanic students, and a correlating decline in adult attendance at “bench-mark” arts events. I will also outline the charges to the Music Education, Athletic Band, and Gender and Eth-nicity Committees and provide some context for how the missions of these committees relate to one another.

I encourage you to visit the CBDNA website and view the content found under the Music Education menu tab. Contained are some links to various websites and articles with ideas that may be contrary to some of our customary viewpoints, as well as some practical articles that can be used in music education methods courses or in the public schools. There is an outstanding Statement on Music Education that was developed by the Athletic Band Committee, located under the Athletic Band menu tab. Reading the content from these areas of our website will facilitate the discussions we hope to have about music education and our role in its future.

There is a natural tendency to hold onto what we know and perpetuate what we understand without consider-ing alternatives. Doing so in a rapidly changing envi-ronment puts us in peril of becoming obsolete. With change comes opportunity to create something more meaningful. Clearly what is needed most is your involvement in the discussion, your sharing of innovative ideas, your will-ingness to experiment and report your results, and your willingness to take risk. While the CBDNA President has been provided the pulpit to express ideas, this must be a multi-directional discussion. These are challenging new times and it will take the collective intellect of our membership to fully understand where we are, where we may be headed, and how we can shape our future.

Best wishes for the remainder of the school year.

Commissions and PremieresDaydreams by Takuma Itoh

Beyond the Veil by Jesse JonesConcerto for Cello and Wind Ensemble by

Steven Bryant

Since 2005, Cynthia Johnston Turner, Director of Wind Ensembles at Cornell University, has been commission-ing DMA composers at Cornell who study with Roberto Sierra and Steven Stucky, to write music that “re-defines the sound of a wind ensemble.” Among those pieces has been Xi Wang’s Concerto for Piano, Percussion and Wind Ensemble (2006), Christopher Starks’ Augenblick (2007) for Electronics and Wind Ensemble, Zachery Wadsworth’s Symphony of Glances (2008), and Ryan Gallagher’s Exorcism (2007) for death metal drummer and wind ensemble. Two new pieces join the project—Takuma Itoh’s Daydreams and Jesse Jones’ Beyond the Veil, both composed this year. On March 13, 2011, the Cornell Wind Ensemble premiered Daydreams. It is approximately 15 minutes in length.

Itoh writes, “In Daydreams, I wanted to create an atmo-sphere of going in and out of a timeless suspension. To create this feeling, I used indeterminate (ad libitum) no-tation alongside a more conventional, metered notation. At time, the indeterminate figures create a suspended at-mosphere while at others they propel the music forward with a rapid flurry of notes. The piece gradually builds until the climactic moment when the sounds literally engulf the listeners: a group of musicians who were on stage in the beginning of the piece are now playing from the balconies, creating a reverberant, “surround-sound” effect for the audience.” One audience member reported, “I couldn’t believe the sound. I loved how it totally enveloped the space.”

3 - COMMISSIONS AND PREMIERES SPRING 2011

Beyond the Veil for 3 (Amplified) Sopranos and Wind Ensemble will be premiered on April 30, 2011, along with Steven Bryant’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Ensemble, co-commissioned by Cornell and cello soloist, Caroline Stinson. Several of these works will be released on compact disc in the near future.

In the World of Spirits (2011) by Bruce Broughton

In the World of Spirits was inspired by a paragraph found in Empire of the Summer Moon, a book by S.C. Gwynne about the rise and fall of the Comanches. In it, the author describes the life of the Plains Indian as ìa world. . . of pure magic, of beaver ceremonies and eagle dances, of spirits that inhabited springs, trees, rock, turtles, and crows; a place where people danced all night and sang bear medicine songs, where wolf medicine made a person invulnerable to bullets, dream visions dictated tribal policy, and ghosts were alive in the wind. . . in the mystical cycles of the seasons, living in that random, terrifying, bloody, and intensely alive place where nature and divinity became one.

In the World of Spirits is not a depiction of a specific spirit world, but instead a representation to some degree of the energy in the world of the spirit. It is the world of motion, of action, of feeling, of terror, of excitement. In short, it is the engine that drives the physical world and in which all things move and live.

Musically, the piece relies upon two main themes. The first one, which features a short burst of repeated notes followed by many leaping phrases, is initially hinted at in the flutes after a short introduction, and then presented in its entirety soon afterwards with the flutes and oboes. The second theme is much more declamatory and pompous, stated often with brass, chimes and trilling woodwinds. These two themes interact to create the basic fast/slow/fast rhapsodic structure of the piece.

Although there is no story or program to the piece, In the World of Spirits is an attempt at a sort of visual music, music that stimulates by its musical associations various visual and dramatic images for the listener, i.e., ballet without the dancers or a movie without the screen.

In the World of Spirits was commissioned by and is dedicated to Dr. Scott A. Stewart and the Emory Wind Ensemble.

that creates such magic, for both the performer and the listener, but there is no denying the incredible power of a shared musical experience.

This setting (based on “O Magnum Mysterium”) was commissioned by Scott Stewart, Emory University Wind Ensemble, and Scott Weiss, University of South Carolina Bands. The premiere took place at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on April 20, 2011.

ResourcesTHE BEST WE CAN BE: The Story of the Ithaca High School Band, 1955-67 by Frank L. Battisti and R. Bruce Musgrave.Meredith Music Publications, 2010. $34.95.

The Best We Can Be is the story of the Ithaca High School Band from 1955-67. During this period the Band set stan-dards for performance on the football field and in the con-cert hall, commissioned and premiered numerous seminal works for band, annually played under pre-eminent guest conductors, established residency programs for composers, produced multi-arts festivals, and redefined the aesthetic premise underlying the whole idea of performance-based music education. The program was a model of artistic and educational excellence.

On CampusCHEYNEY UNIVERSITY

The Cheyney University Bands Program has had a wonder-ful season of supporting the University and surrounding community. During the Fall 2011 season the multi-faceted band program, which consists of a jazz ensemble, wind ensemble, jazz combo, pep band, and marching band has participated in over 32 events. Highlights include: Concerned Blackmen 2nd Annual Battle of The Bands in Lancaster, PA; The 41st Annual African American Day Parade in Harlem New York; 15th Annual Collegiate Band Festival in Allentown, PA; The Ed Bradley gala Performance featuring Bill Cosby; the US Color Guard Troop Re-enactment Civil War Parade in Harrisburg, Pa; The Music in Our Schools Month, March 28-29; Quincy Hilliard Celebration; and the Philadelphia International Festival of Arts.

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITYThe 36th annual Symposium for New Band Music, spon-sored by the Virginia chapter of CBDNA, was held Feb-ruary 11-12, 2011 at Longwood University in Farmville. Three composers were selected through a national call to attend the symposium and conduct their new works in open rehearsal sessions over the two-day period. A final recording session was then held on the final afternoon.

Selected composers/conductors and their works were Amelia by Arthur Gottschalk of Houston, Texas and Rice University, Foolish Fire by Greg Simon of Boulder, Colorado and Metropolitan State University and the University of Colorado, and Sum-mer Concerto by Rodney Waschka II of Burlington, North Carolina and North Carolina State University. Waschka’s work is an alto saxophone concerto, and the soloist was Charles Kinzer, chair of the music department and professor of saxophone at Long-wood University.

The performing group for the symposium was the Virginia Intercollegiate Band, a 50-member en-semble comprised of students from James Madison University, Liberty University, Longwood Univer-sity, and Virginia Tech.
