My proudest achievement is figuring out what I loved to do and making that my profession. I took a chance deciding to go back to school for interior design. I have never looked back.

START A NEW CAREER

We are a small school in a big city, educating designers to succeed around the globe. Students come from all over the world to study here because we do everything in our power to set them up for professional success. With hundreds of design courses to choose from, a faculty of working designers and architects, access to internships and design destinations throughout the city, NYSID has it all.

And, we have been doing this for a long time—100 years! The New York School of Interior Design was founded in 1916, when the profession of interior design was just beginning to take shape. The industry has changed dramatically throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, and we have been right there leading the way in education as the profession has adapted and grown.

This is an exciting and fast-growing field and we are proud to be educating the next generation of interior designers. Join us and be one of them.

Welcome

“Because of our size, NYSID is the sort of place where we are all on a first-name basis. Our student/ faculty ratio is 10 to 1, and yet the range of classes that we offer is utterly astounding. There is no other educational institution in this country doing what we do.”

—DAVID SPROULS, PRESIDENT

Interior design is all about how we experience spaces. It’s a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal. Comfortable homes, functional workplaces, beautiful public spaces—that’s interior design at work.

The best interior designers make it look easy, crafting spaces that anticipate our needs and appeal to our emotions, but in reality a broad set of skills and technical knowledge is required. Interior design has changed dramatically since the early 20th century when it was just beginning to emerge as a profession.

Today, interior designers work with contractors, architects, engineers, craftsmen, furniture dealers, and business and home owners. To become a successful interior designer, you need a well-rounded education and the skills to work within many disciplines (architecture; graphic design; decorative arts; and textile, furniture, and lighting design). Interior designers are expected to have working knowledge of:

• Textiles, materials, color, space planning, sustainability, and more

• Software applications for 2D and 3D computer-aided design (CAD) and building information modeling (BIM)

• Structural requirements, health and safety issues, and building codes

WHAT IS INTERIOR DESIGN TODAY?

Career OptionsWithin the field of interior design, there are a wealth of career options. You can start your own practice, work for a small or large firm, or specialize in a particular skill (such as lighting) or a specific area (such as hospitality). The possibilities are endless—and they’re expanding every day.

Interior design is a smart career path. As investment in construction and renovation increases, interior design revenue is expected to grow 14% in 2015, and overall employment is expected to grow 13% over the next decade.

Residential interior design is about the spaces we live in; it can cover projects large and small, from planning entire homes to designing a single room.

Commercial interior design centers on public spaces like hotels, restaurants, retail stores, offices, and hospitals.

ABOUT NYSID

Faculty

The New York School of Interior Design is a great learning institution because of its faculty. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds and bring practical and theoretical experience from their professional lives.

Our faculty members are practicing designers at many of the top design firms in the country: Gensler, HOK, Perkins + Will, Rockwell Group, and Robert A.M. Stern Architects to name a few. Many are also principals of their own firms—for instance, Kati Curtis of Kati Curtis Design, Stefan Steil of Steilish, and Warren Ashworth of his self-titled architecture firm.

“We instructors support students in all sorts of ways—from special tutorials to extra class time to academic advising. I have office hours, but nobody really pays attention to them—students are always welcome to drop by.”

New York is home of world-renowned cultural institutions: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and many more. There are also essential design resources, such as the New York Design Center (3), the Decoration & Design Building (4), and the Architects & Designers Building (5), all of which have a variety of showrooms that students get to visit often.

There’s no place like New York City. It’s at the heart of the design world, and the New York School of Interior Design is in the thick of it, with two Manhattan facilities—our main headquarters on the Upper East Side on 70th Street (1) and our Graduate Center at 28th Street & Park Avenue South (2).

ABOUT NYSID

Study Abroad

Every year, NYSID faculty members lead small groups of students overseas and share their insider’s knowledge of local design. Destinations have included such cities as Beijing, Istanbul, London, Paris, Rome, Shanghai, and Vienna. In addition to visiting well-known destinations, students have access to private spaces and get behind-the-scenes tours of design firms, historic homes, and artists’ studios.

In the Global Studio Initiative, NYSID students have the opportunity to collaborate with design students from other countries. Most recently, this workshop took students to Ning’er County in China’s Yunnan Province for a two-week design charrette with students from Peking University. Together, they came up with designs for a dormitory for Ning’er High School and an exhibition hall that was destroyed in the 2007 earthquake that struck the region.

“I really loved the study abroad programs. They fostered a firsthand understanding of the concepts we learned in the classroom and they broadened my understanding of both architecture and the global design market in a way that only actual travel can do.”

ALUMNI PROFILE

KATIE BARONS, MFA, 2011

Katie is currently a designer at Gensler, the largest architecture and design firm in the world.

“While studying interior design in undergraduate school in upstate New York, I had multiple mentoring and tutoring experiences that led me to pursue a master’s in interior design. After researching NYSID’s top-ranked graduate program and visiting the campus, I knew I wanted to attend and study in the nation’s design capital.”

“Not only did the MFA program provide me with the credentials to be a professor, I also received a valuable education with rich and rewarding design experiences. I even had the opportunity to study abroad in London. I was fortunate to start my design career immediately after graduation, and for the past two years I have enjoyed working on corporate interiors for Gensler.”
