Rajasthan Tour 7th - 17th November 2017

On 7th November 2017 the College tour group comprising

of 52 students and 7 staff members departed from Margao

railway station by the Goa Sampark Kranti Express. The

group reached Jaipur on 8th November night.

9th November was the first day of sight-seeing, which

started with the Laxmi-Narayan temple popularly known

as Birla Mandir, Jaipur. It was a beautiful place, clean and

tidy, entirely made of marble - both the interior and

exterior, beautiful artwork, well-maintained spic and span campus. A good experience to begin

with. Later the group visited Hawa Mahal and City Palace, followed by Jantar Mantar - a

marvel. The structures which stand show such scientific ingenuity that the exact time can be

determined by the shadow cast on it by the sun’s rays. After lunch, the group proceeded to visit

the Amer Fort - a climb uphill and a beautiful view of the city.

Evening time was for shopping.

On 10th November the team left for Bikaner. The Indian

Council for Agricultural Research has a Research Centre on

Camels in Bikaner. There were varieties of camels - white,

brown, dark, hairy, etc. and camels of different age groups -

new-born, mothers, young ones, etc. Different articles like

ornaments, bags, garments, show-pieces all made of camel

skin, bones, hair and other parts were displayed for sale. The team also tasted tea, coffee, ice-

cream, etc. made of camel milk. Next visit was to the famous Karni Mata Temple. It was a

unique temple with hundreds and thousands of rats moving freely all about the temple including

the sanctum sanctorum. There is a legend associated with this temple - the museum opposite to

the temple explains the association of rats with this temple. The night halt was at Hotel Sagar - a

beautiful heritage hotel.

11th November the team visited the Lalgarh Palace and museum followed by Junagarh Fort - an

ancient Rajputana Fort. Afternoon the team left for Jaisalmer which is called the Golden City (just

as Jaipur is called Pink City) as the buildings and structures in this city are made of golden yellow

stone which is available in plenty in this part of Rajasthan. The stay was at Mahadev Palace Hotel.

On 12th November the team visited the Gadisar Lake and

enjoyed a boat ride and also visited the Nathmaji Ki Haveli,

Patwon Ki Haveli which are huge residential buildings with

marvellous artistic carvings. The team then proceeded to

Sam Sand Dunes - a part of Thar Desert which is 60 to 70

kms away from Pakistan border. Camel Ride, Camel Cart Ride

and a view of the Sunset in the desert were quite enjoyable.

The team also experienced living in the tents, enjoyed

Rajasthani folk music, folk dance and Bonfire. Our students also participated in the Rajashani folk

dance. The night in the tents was a unique experience which most of us enjoyed.

On 13th November early morning at 6 A.M. the team went on a desert safari. This was a unique

experience with bumpy ride in open jeeps in the cold desert wind on the uneven desert surface

which was enjoyed most by students and watched the sunrise in the desert. Later on in Jodhpur

the team visited the Umaid Bhavan Palace and Museum and evening was shopping time. The

stay for the night was in Hotel J S Regency. 14th November the students visited the Mehrangad

Fort - a huge fort standing as witness to the glory of Rajput rulers. In the afternoon left for Mount

Abu and reached late in the evening and stayed at Hotel Grandiose.

15th November at Mount Abu was a cold place being a hill station. There the team visited the

Brahmakumari Head Quarters, Dilwara Jain Temple, Nakki Lake

and later spent time in shopping.

16th November the team left for Udaipur, a beautiful lake city and

visited the Maharana Pratap Smarak - a beautiful Memorial Park

reminding us the life and greatness of Maharana Pratap. Saheliyon

Ki Bari - a beautiful garden full of fountains functioning without

electricity since time immemorial was a park used by princesses and their women companions

only. The team then visited the City Palace and spent time in shopping. The night halt was at

Hotel Amantara Shilpi - a beautiful Resort Hotel where before dinner our students danced to the

retro Music which was provided to them.

17th November The team left Udaipur for Kota Railway Station by bus and boarded the Sampark

Kranti Express and reached Margao on 18th November carrying sweet memories of Rajasthan

Tour.

NSS Annual Special Camp 2017 – 2018 8th - 14th November 2017

The NSS unit of the College organised its Annual Special

Camp at Shree Vimleshwar Devashtan, Rivona from

November 8-14, 2017.

All the NSS volunteers with the NSS Programme Officers

reached the campsite at around 2.30 pm on November 8th.

After reaching the campsite, the NSS volunteers cleaned the

camp premises. The inaugural function was scheduled at

5.00 pm. The Chief Guest for the programme was Shri Suraj Naik, Sarpanch of Rivona

Village Panchayat. In his speech, he spoke about the natural beauty of Rivona village and also

expressed his willingness to provide any help needed.

The gathering was welcomed by NSS PO Dr.Vishal Chari who emphasised NSS as one of the most

important platforms for the college youth to serve the community. Mrs Vaishali Gaonkar who

was the Guest of Honour stressed that the change in the nation lies in the hands of today's youth

and they should realise it. The Vote of thanks was

proposed by NSS Programme Officer Ms. Preksha

Chopdekar. The inaugural function was also attended by

NSS Programme Officers Mrs.Smita Marathe & Ms

Deepa Talawar and the NSS volunteers.

After tea and snacks, a meeting was scheduled for the

NSS volunteers in the evening wherein 5 groups were

formed. The groups and the individuals were given

orientation about their duties and responsibilities and assigned tasks pertaining to each group.

The second day of the camp (9th November 2017) started with

the morning walk followed by assembly. At around 9.00 am all

the NSS volunteers cleaned the temple premises. The afternoon

session was organised under the guidance of NSS Programme

Officer Smita Marathe, where Mr. David Sweeney presented a

talk on the topic Women Empowerment and also on other

social issues.

In the evening the NSS volunteers participated in cultural activities.

The third day of the camp (10th November 2017) started with the morning walk followed by

assembly. Later the NSS volunteers went for fieldwork which included cleaning of premises of

Govt. Primary School. NSS volunteers cleaned the school playground and painted the sports

facilities at the school.

In the afternoon, talk on Public Speaking by Mr Ketan

Jadhav was organised. Evening session included cultural

activities by NSS volunteers.

The fourth day of the camp (11th November 2017) started as

usual with the morning walk & assembly. On this day the

NSS unit had organised ‘Ayurveda Medical Camp’ for the

villagers between 9 am to 1 pm at the campsite. Expert

Ayurveda doctors from Kamakshi Arogyadham, Ayurvedic

College & Hospital, Shiroda treated as many as 32 patients. Free medicines were also distributed

to the patients after the consultations.

In the afternoon session, there was a talk about What

constitutes Sexual Harassment by Mrs. Sidhi Parodkar.

The evening session included cultural activities by NSS

volunteers.

On the fifth day (12th November 2017) after the morning

walk & assembly, volunteers were sent for fieldwork. During

the afternoon session volunteers were taken for a “Nature Walk” where they were shown ancient

caves, springs & lakes of Rivona Village. Evening session included cultural activities by NSS

volunteers.

The sixth day of the camp (13th November 2017) started with the morning walk and assembly

after which the volunteers headed for cleaning of temple premises.

For the afternoon session, there was a talk by Prof. Adarsh Handa on the topic Organ

Donation. After that, there was a talk by Mrs. Samantha Noronha on the “Highlights of the

Indian Constitution” followed by Quiz competition for the volunteers.

In the evening there were cultural activities followed by the Valedictory function. The chief guest

for the function was Goa University NSS Coordinator Shri. Sanjeev Shirodkar. The Guest of

Honour was Vice Principal Dr Sanjay Dessai. The gathering was welcomed by was Chief NSS

Programme Officers Dr Sarath Chandran and Dr Vishal Chari proposed the vote of thanks. The

day ended with a campfire at the night.

The seventh day of the camp (14th November 2017) started with the assembly after which the

volunteers were made to clean the rooms, halls, kitchen and the surrounding of the campsite,

before leaving the site.

Awareness Programme on Legal Rights of Women 13th November 2017

In furtherance of an initiative by the National Commission of Women towards a nationwide

competition to create awareness about the legal rights of women,

the College organized a college-level competition on 13th

November 2017.

Ms. Samantha Noronha, Asst. Prof. in Law delivered an

enlightening talk on The Constitution of India mainly the

Preamble, Fundamental

Rights, Directive Principles of

State Policy, Fundamental

duties, including Articles 32 and 226 thereof. Following the

lecture, she conducted a quiz competition on the same topic in

which38 students participated. The competition was in two parts:

the first part was in a multiple choice question format and for the second part students wrote a

short note summarizing the lecture.

Study tour of BBA (FS) 13th - 18th November 2017

The BBA(FS) Department of the College organized a

Study tour to Mumbai from 13th to 18th November, 2017.

43 students were accompanied by 7 Faculty members for

the study tour.

In Mumbai, the first visit was to India’s oldest and biggest

stock exchange, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) where

students attended a seminar conducted by Mr. Aditya

Srinivas, Chief Operating Officer at BSE Brokers

Forum. The session covered topics such as functions of BSE, macroeconomic parameters

affecting the Indian economy and comparison of the world economy with the Indian economy.

The students were shown a trading screen and also explained how the Indices increase and

decrease and their impact.

On the evening of 14th, the team visited the financial market regulator, Securities Exchange

Board of India (SEBI), where the students were briefed about the various investment options

available for investors, SEBI’s role as securities market regulator and investor grievance handling.

Towards the end of the session, students were given a test to judge their financial market

knowledge.

On 15th November, the visit was to National Stock Exchange (NSE) where Mr. Vijay

Bhambwani, CEO – BSPL India.com, Professional Trader addressed the students on the

history of stock market trading, role of NSE in forward and future option market and the

performance of the market over the time. Furthermore

the students were informed the importance of NSE

Certifications. The resource person encouraged the

students to join the NSE Academy as the course

curriculum would assist the students to have an

established career.

On 16th November, the visit was to Multi Commodity

Exchange of India (MCX), where the session was conducted by Mr Satyajit Chattopadhyaye-

Assistant Vice President, Training and Education Department. The session commenced with

introduction to the MCX exchange and the history of the commodities market. The session also

emphasized the overall working of the commodities market, the external forces that drive the

commodities market, along with recent developments in the commodities market.

The sessions at different financial institutions, industry expert interactions, practical exposure of

live trading screen and industry expert advises and experts’ experience sharing have enabled the

students to widen their knowledge. Overall it was a good learning experience for the students.

Workshop on Research Methodology 5th - 11th December 2017

The Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi, Department of Economics, Goa University, Goa

and Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, Margao, Goa, jointly organised a National

Level Workshop on Research Methodology in Social Sciences from 5-11 December, 2017.

More than 300 applications were received of which a total of 60 candidates were selected. The

workshop was truly national in character as the participants

represented more than 15 states. The workshop also witnessed

the participation of candidates representing 18 subjects.

Almost all participants were research scholars who have

registered for Ph.D and are working towards the completion.

The function was inaugurated on 5th December 2017 at

the hands of the Honourable Vice Chancellor of Goa

University, Prof. Varun Sahni. Prof. P.K.Sudarsan, Head of the Department of Economics, Goa

University and Coordinator of the Workshop welcomed the gathering. Dr. Amarenda Pani,

Director(Research), Association of Indian Universities (AIU) introduced the workshop to the

participants. The Vice Chancellor in his presidential address highlighted the importance of Social

Science Research and also made a presentation on ‘Social Science Research Methodology’. Dr.Usha

Rai Negi, Assistant Director Research, AIU, was also present at the inaugural function.

Dr Sony Pellisery from National Law School of India University, Bangalore, spoke on the topics:

Introduction to Social Sciences Research and Qualitative Research in Social Sciences. He said that

social sciences have context dependability which increases complexity and requires a nuanced

understanding.

Dr. Gopakumar, Librarian, Goa University, conducted two practical sessions on e-resources for social

sciences research. He introduced the participants to the software Mendeley wherein one can create a

free account and get access to literature on the topic of study. He showed the technique of citing

while writing and writing references and bibliography using these tools. Dr. Bino Paul, Professor and

Dean, TISS, Mumbai, spoke on the topic: Integrating Quantitative and Qualitative Methods in Social

Science Research. He explained the various types of study that can be undertaken in social sciences:

latitudinal, cross section and longitudinal studies. Dr. Neeraj Hatekar, Professor and Director,

Mumbai School of Economics, Mumbai University, conducted four sessions on Quantitative Methods

for Social Sciences. With simple illustrations and examples, Prof. Hatekar explained the basics of

quantitative techniques for the theory of statistical inference such as mean, variance, standard

deviation, etc. He also introduced sampling, hypothesis testing, normal distribution and tests like

one tailed test and two tailed test.

Dr. Nandakumar Mekoth, Professor, Dept. of

Management Studies, Goa University, conducted

practical sessions on Qualitative and Quantitative

Analysis using SPSS. Using the data base he provided,

participants learnt how to do data entry in SPSS, and

analyse data for basic hypothesis testing, factor

analysis, correlation and regression.

Dr. Pranab Mukhopadhyay, Professor, Dept. of

Economics, Goa University, conducted two sessions on Secondary Data for Social Science Research in

India – Sources and Uses. He spoke about international data bases such as World Bank Open Data

which has data of around 190 countries, UN data and Global Tobacco Surveillance System Data (GTSS

Data). Important sources of secondary data in India include CMIE, NSSO, IHDS, NFHS and NCRB. Dr.

Tapaswi, Former Librarian, NIO, Goa and Officer on Special Duty, IQAC, Goa University, spoke on

Plagiarism – What It Is, How to Avoid It and Penalties in India. He focused on citations and how

ensuring that works of other researchers have to be cited correctly and gave practical tips on how to

avoid plagiarism.

Dr. Jayaram, Retired Professor in Sociology, TISS, Mumbai, and Former Director, ISEC, Bangalore,

covered the Philosophical Underpinnings of Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches to the Study of

Social Phenomena and also spoke on the Elements of Academic Writing. He also spoke about

ontology, epistemology, logic and method and research as knowledge transaction. Dr. P.K. Sudarsan,

Professor and Head, Dept. of Economics, Goa University, introduced to the participants, the use of

GRETL software for statistical and econometric data analysis.

The valedictory function was 11/12/2017 at 3.30 pm and the Registrar of Goa University was the

Chief Guest. The Registrar, who himself was a Professor and Dean in the Department of Commerce,

Goa University, emphasized the need for publishing the research work in journals indexed in Scopus,

Web of Knowledge, etc. Registrar thanked AIU for sanctioning the workshop and giving an

opportunity for the Goa University to conduct a National Level Workshop. He also thanked the

Coordinators of the Workshop Professor P. K. Sudarsan, Professor, Department of Economics, Goa

University and Dr. Vishal Chari, Assistant Professor, Shree Damodar College of Commerce &

Economics, Margao, Goa.

All-India Advanced Yachting Camp (NCC-Navy) 8th -10th December 2017

Three Cadets (NCC-Navy) – Amruth Virdikar, Nusabh Mulla and Suni Ben attended the All-India

Advanced Yachting Camp 2017 at Vasco from 8th to 10th Dec 2017.

Sports Meet 2017-18 15th -16th December 2017

Vidya Vikas Mandal organized a 2-day Annual Sports

Meet on 15th & 16th December 2017 at 3 MTR, Navelim.

There were around 500 participants from the three

institutions viz. Shree Damodar College of Commerce &

Economics, G.R. Kare College of Law and RMS Higher

Secondary School.

The Inaugural Ceremony was held on 15th December 2017

at the hands of the Chief Guest Commanding Officer Col.

Gurnaam Singh, in the presence of Subedar Major Vijay Raj,

Chairman of Sports Governing Council, Mr. Vikram Verlekar,

Prinicpal of G.R.Kare College of Law Dr. Saba Da Silva, Vice

Principal of Shree Damodar College of Commerce &

Economics Dr. Sanjay P Sawant Dessai and RMS Higher

Secondary Principal Mr. Alvaro Abranches.

The occasion was graced by the performance of students’ band of Vidya Vikas Academy and the

VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics.

The Valedictory Function was conducted on the 16th

December 2017, presided by Smt. Sheela Gaunekar

President Vidya Vikas Mandal, alongside the chief

guest Commanding Officer Col. Gurnaam Singh,

Subedar Major Vijay Raj, Chairman of Sports Governing

Council Mr. Vikram Verlekar.

Various sports events were conducted for students and a

couple of games were conducted for the Teaching and

Non-Teaching Staff. Prizes were awarded to all the

winners of various events held at the annual sports meet.

Shri. Sudhakar Naik, College Director of Physical

Education & Sports was presented a memento for his

excellent service towards the institution.

The Best Sportsman Award 2017-18 was shared by Mr.

Shivam Mishra and Mr. Subhodh Rivankar. The Best Sportswoman Award 2017-18 was bagged by

Miss Quinsha Fernandes

The event was a great success under the leadership of Chairman of Sports Governing Council

Vidya Vikas Mandal, Mr. Vikram Verlekar.

Fun-Week 18th -22nd December 2017

The Students' Council of the College organised Fun Week from 18th to 22nd December 2017.

The programme was meticulously planned and executed by the students

with a variety of competitions, games, spot prizes etc. across four days.

The fun-week was theme-based where six teams from the college

namely; TY B.Com, SY B.Com, FY B.Com, BCA, BBA(FS) and M.Com,

competed with each other to claim their supremacy in two offstage and

one onstage competition each on all four days. Based on the collective

performances of all the days, winners of the

Fun Week were declared. During the fun-week

students had put up a variety of stalls in the

College premises.

Day 1:18th December

Theme: Halloween

The first day of Fun Week was organised on the Theme “Halloween”.

Students participated with lot of enthusiasm by dressing according to the theme. Off stage and on

stage events were held that suited the theme of the day.

Off-stage event: Nail Art and Face Painting.

On-stage event: Fashion Show.

The first place for Nail Art competition was won by BBA (FS) students and Face painting by

B.Com students. The fashion show had participation by four teams each consisting of BCOM, BBA

(FS), BCA and MCOM. The winners for the fashion show were: 1st place: MCOM, 2nd place:

TYBCOM and 3rd place: BBA(FS).

DAY 2- 20th December:

Theme: TRADITIONAL DAY

The Second Year students organized Traditional Day Celebrations. The main intention of the

celebration was to make students aware of different traditions, culture & its importance. The

traditional day was quite enriching as it made students

realize the importance of other traditions and inculcate

the value of unity and togetherness by respecting other

traditions along with their own. The highlight was that

the students dressed themselves not only to their own

traditions but also to the traditions belonging to others

Off-stage event: Mehendi and Wealth out of Waste

Competition

On-stage event: Dance Competition.

The participants thrilled everyone with their dance performances. Winners of the Competition

were M.Com with BBA(FS) as first runners up and S.Y.B.Com as second runners up. With equal

enthusiasm, students participated for off stage events; a total of 17 students from different

programmes participated for Mehendi Competition. Winners of the Competition were M.Com

with TY B.Com as first runners up and F.Y.B.Com as second runners up. For Wealth out of Waste

Competition 09 students from different programmes participated. Winners of the Competition

were M.Com with TY B.Com as first runners up and BCA as second runners up.

DAY 3- 21th December:

Theme: Retro – Blast from the Past

The third day of Fun Week was organised by First Year

students on the theme “Blast from the Past”. Students

In-charge were Urvee Kadam, Sifta Shaikh and

Dharmesh Tyagi and Comperes were Liyo Lopise and

Xavier Jaynold. Off stage and on stage events were held

that suited the theme of the day as follows.

Off-stage event: Retro Makeover and Mannequin Challenge

On-stage event: Singing

The first place for Retro Makeover was won by MCOM, first runners up were

FYBCOM and second runners up were BBA. Mannequin Challenge was won

by SYB.Com, first runner up were TYBCOM students and second runner up

were BBA.

The onstage Singing competition was won SYBCOM, first runners up were MCOM and second

runners up were BBA. At the end, students competed for Mr. and Ms. Retro Competition.

DAY 4- 22th December:

Theme: Jashn-e-Tyohar

Day four of the fun week was organised by M.Com department with the festive theme “Jashn-

e_Tyohar”. Students were dressed traditionally as per different festivals celebrated across India.

Off stage event: Face Painting and Season’s Greetings (making a greeting Card)

On stage event: Mile Sur Mera Tumhara (group singing) and Mr & Ms Damodar.

The first place for face painting was won by MCOM and first

runners up were BBA. Season’s Greetings was won by

MCom, first runner up were TYBCOM and second runner up

were FY BCOM. The onstage Mile Sur Mera Tumhara

competition was won BBA, first runners up were SYBCOM

and second runners up were MCOM. Mr & Ms Damodar was

won by Mr. Damodar–Shrey Kulkarni (M.Com) and Ms.

Damodar – Veronica Pereira (M.Com).

Inter-Class Competitions 18th -22nd Dec 2017

The Cultural Council organized inter-class competition during the Fun Week held from 18th to 22nd

December 2017. The competitions held were as follows:

Mocktail Making, Garland making, Rangoli and Pot

painting. Mr. Sunil Naik, Ms. Lizia Gomes, Ms. Gauravi

Keni and Ms. Prachi Kolamkar were the respective teachers

in charge of the events. Mocktail making was held on the

18th which had 8 participants. The first, second and third

place winners for the event were Mathew Fernandes (FY

BCA), Swizel Rodrigues (TY B.Com) and Ridhima Naik (TY

B.Com). On the 20th two students participated in the Garland making competition. Vibhuti Gawas

from M.Com Part II made the best Garland. On the 21st

Rangoli competition was held wherein 16 students

participated in teams of two. Yakshita Vengurlekar and

Runal Thakur of FY B.Com won the first place followed by

Vinita Kolvenkar and Neetu Pandey of FY B.Com in the

second place and Snehal Bhuttewadkar and Srishti Patel of

FY B.Com in the third place. Pot Painting competition was

held on the 22nd with two participants; Kiran Kumar

Badiger won the Competition.

National Mathematics Day Celebration 22nd December 2017

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics

celebrated National Mathematics Day on 22nd

December 2017 to mark the birth anniversary of the

great Indian Mathematics Genius Srinivasa

Ramanujan.

The students of FY B.Com and SY B.Com prepared

and presented posters on various topics related to

Mathematics and Statistics. There was also a quiz

conducted on the life of Srinivasa Ramanujan.

The celebration of the National Mathematics Day on the campus made students aware about the

important contribution of Ramanujan in the field of Mathematics and it also motivated students

to appreciate the importance of Mathematics in various aspects of daily life.

NCC activities Oct - Dec 2017

1. 14 cadets of NCC Army along with ANO Dr. Sanjay P

Sawant Dessai attended Trekking camp at Netharhat

Jharkhand from 28th October 2017 to 8th November

2018. During the camp, cadets undertook a 60 Km trek

for three days and took part in Rock climbing, Rappelling,

Valley Crossing and Para sailing

Christmas Party 23rd December 2017

Christmas was celebrated at the College on 23rd Dec by the faculty and staff members of the

College. The programme included interesting games, food and lots of fun.
