Video Précis

Security threats cut across national boundaries,

and in every walk of life today, breach of security is

a real possibility. Whether it is work places,

schools, campuses, homes, airports, seaports,

malls, roads, or borders, ensuring security is a

growing challenge for law enforcement agencies

worldwide. A Smart City Surveillance project

aims to enhance public safety, check crime,

maintain a smooth transportation system (by

punishing traffic law violators), and protect

properties, among other things. In sum, it is about

making a city a better place to live in, and

providing its citizens a better quality of life.

Millions of security cameras have been deployed

worldwide to give a sense of security to common

people. Most of the time, the investigating

agencies are dependent on reviewing the

recorded footage to establish the facts. When

hundreds of cameras are involved in an

enterprise-class surveillance system, a review of

such huge volume of video storage is manpower-

intensive and time-consuming. As a result, the

investigation and justice to the victim gets

delayed. By the time, a clue is found from the

recorded video archive, the criminal could be out

of reach. Hence, law and order agencies need

efficient investigation tools to quickly review large

video archive, and find clues in a fraction of time

required by the traditional way of viewing video

clips. Simply put, the need is to view hours of video

in minutes.

Videonetics' novel Video Précis technology is an

endeavor to address this challenge. Video Précis

technology is particularly useful to search

through large video archives with timely, sparse

events in the scene.

Technology

Video is essentially a sequence of image frames captured at regular intervals. Each image frame is a two-dimensional

representation of the scene in the field of view of the camera. Time can be considered as the third dimension. With

change of time, the contents of each image frame change due to motion or moving objects in the scene.

Videonetics Video Précis technology time-condenses meaningful activities in the scene in an overlapped time scale.

This is not merely a motion detection technique. It continuously models the background of the scene, and at the same

time, segregates all the meaningful foreground or moving objects from the selected video segment. The background

modelling technique has a very small footprint and is computationally efficient. The timestamp showing appearance

of all moving objects, and their position in the scene at any instance, are continuously indexed, tracked and saved.

This is shown with a real-life example in Figure 1.

At a regular interval, all these moving objects are temporally mapped into the modelled background in a systematic,

overlapped fashion in a reduced time scale. This produces a shorter duration video clip representing activities of all

the moving objects in the scene, in parallel. It also analyses the time projection of different activities in a short time

scale, to minimise occlusion or overlapping of objects. When the video is played, it will show two different activities of

the same person in the moving picture.

The smaller size video with reduced number of frames helps investigating agencies to review hours of activities in a

desired scene within a few minutes, without needing to go through hours of video archives. Once the clue is found

from this small condensed video clip, the user can select the intended object in the scene, to unfold the original video

from the huge video archive.
