First Impression- The first impression is really important.

- Avoid greetings, such as "Hey, guys", "Hi there", "Hello everyone", etc.

- Avoid having a long pause in the first 5 seconds. The first few seconds of the video is important. A long pause might lose engagement.

- Interesting cover image, with a short and recognizable introduction that is memorable and is greatly beneficial.

- If your video is not narrative, you can skip the opening remarks.

USP - Unique Selling Proposition

- Choose your field of expertise

- Highlight your strengths:

- If you feel comfortable expressing yourself and your personality on screen, feel free too! Sing, Dance, Whatever! Show us and our community what makes you, you.

- If you have a good voice and can sing, feel free to share this with your audience! Have fun!

Background Music- Some background music at the

beginning is a great choice.

- You can use the same style of background music across multiple videos to make them more personalized and unique.

- “Don’t mix background music with your voice, unless very subtle, because users may not be able to fully understand you.” Remember, English as a Second Language :)

Voice Over Tips- Speak louder so users can hear you without

having to turn up the volume.

- Speak clearly and slower than you normally would

- Briefly summarize what you will cover at the beginning of the video

- Can use video editing tools to adjust your voice over if needed

- Avoid volume fluctuation in the dubbing of the video

Page 11: Video Creation Guideline For Teachers - Content Creation Tutorial.pdf · an ESL video content creator of BlaBla. ! • This is the guideline to create short videos for ESL users on

Video Specs- Videos need to be VERTICAL with an aspect ratio of

9:16, like the image on the right.

- The resolution should be at least 720x1280 or 1080x1920 to make sure your video is clear because smartphones nowadays have higher resolutions.

- A video length is between 30 seconds to 60 seconds. Shorter videos perform better. For a 30s video, the file size is about 30MB.

- Avoid placing hints, keywords, or emojis at the bottom of the screen because we need the space to display the app’s functionalities.

- Don’t use WhatsApp, WeChat, or Facebook to transmit your video files. These apps compress your files. Please upload videos directly to BlaBla from your phone’s album.

Making Great Videos - Background -   Indoor Shooting

- Use a background for indoor videos

- Make sure the video quality is good enough to clearly see your surroundings.

- Having proper lighting is important, as it not only improves the quality of your videos but also the viewers' experience.

- Avoid insufficient light or overexposure in the picture

- Outdoor Shooting

- Choose a quieter scene or use professional radio equipment (ambient sound reduction)

- Jitter Issue

- Use a stabilizer or a tripod so that the video does not shake.

Making Great Videos - Storyline - Design your series topics and then design each video’s

storyline.

- Each video should contain an independent storyline. Users don’t always watch videos in the sequence of one another, even if in the same series.

- Have a clear idea of the story you want to deliver for a 30 to 60 seconds video before you start recording.

- Body language is a powerful way to tell a story.

- Even if it's to explain an idiom, make it entertaining by incorporating real scenarios or role-plays.

- For example, to introduce your city, you can make a lot of videos, and each video introduces one aspect (food, stores, attractions, history, etc.) in 30 to 60 seconds.

Page 14: Video Creation Guideline For Teachers - Content Creation Tutorial.pdf · an ESL video content creator of BlaBla. ! • This is the guideline to create short videos for ESL users on

Making Great Videos - Video Props - Speech-only videos make the audience lose interest in your

stories.

- Use video clips or pictures related to the storyline.

- Don’t use photo slide shows. Instead, embed a photo into your video story.

- Don’t record computer screens directly, it’s of lesser quality and looks unprofessional. Instead, embed the photos into your videos. Please ask us for help if you need to download any online videos or pictures for your recording purposes.

- Use scenery shots to explain the storyline related to time and space.

- Make sure your movements are in the focal point of the camera.

- Instructional videos can use a blackboard or leave a blank space so that you can video edit in the key content later.

- A list of words will be extracted from subtitles to create a vocabulary list. And Mandarin subtitles will be converted from your English subtitles.

- When you edit subtitles, please make sure you use the correct punctuation. And please type all sentences into one paragraph, eg. “This is the first sentence. This is the 2nd sentence. This is the 3rd sentence”.

Appendix: Title/Tags/Level/Series/CoverImage

- The last step is to give 1) a video title, 2) tags, 3) levels of difficulty, 4) series, and 5) a cover image to your video.

- Please add up to 2 tags only. Too many will confuse users. Tags are important because we use tags to categorize your videos into different themes and then recommend to users who subscribed to that topic.

- Series are used to group relevant videos you created together so users can watch them in a series. You can think of this like Netflix Episodes.
