Avicci-WAKE me UPmusic video analysis

Page 2: Video analysis wake me up

The song was released as Avicci’s first single from his full length debut album. The genre of the song is a combination of clubbing and country. It could also be a pop genre as the song is written to reach a mass audience.

The music video is strongly narrative; the story is about two girls not belonging to their home town. The older girl travels out to another town and finds that this is where they belong. Location of the music video is set in a rural area. Though in a certain part of the video the characters are shown tobe in a club or even the Avicci live concert…

The video has some relevance to the lyrics of the song. The first verse and first chorus

links strongly the most with the video. The first verse mentions that ‘I can’t tell where the journey will end’ which is similar to the

situation of the two characters in the video. But near the end the lyrics don’t really match with the video. Reason being is because the

lyrics are still slightly negative when the characters are cheerfully having fun (an

example of contradiction).

In the beginning wide shots are used in the first two clips (very wide shot and a normal wide shot). This immediately sets the scene that the video will mostly take place in rural areas.

The emptiness of the clips also creates an enigma of why the area is so empty…

A two shot is used for the two girls showing their relationship. They could possibly be sisters or even mother and daughter.

Lots of tracking shots are used in the scene where the two are walking in the town which lets us follow the action into the scene. Close up’s are combined with movement shots which shows how the characters are looking at the main protagonists in disgust, and with the use of the movement shots this creates a sense of realism that we are experiencing how the characters are feeling.

Most of the time in the video the camera angles are usually moderate, though high angles are used to mainly show scenery.

Not many low angles were used.

The editing is neither fast or slow though in a few clips slow motion is used to create a dramatic effect. Filters or colour correction is used to enhance the visuals of the music video. The result of the look is similar to the photographic filters used on an app called Instagram, which possibly links to the audience… The lighting is pretty moderate all the way through.

There is an intertexual reference of the use of the camera on a smartphone in one clip which makes it relates to the audience.

Both non diagetic (the music) and diagetic (voices of the characters) are used in the video. When the two characters first talk to each other they don’t sound to happy because the volume of their voices isn’t that loud… The next scene with the two of them talking is much different to the first. When she says “Get up, pack your things "the acting isn’t particularly any good but you get an idea that positivity is conveyed as the tone of the older girl’s voice is slightly higher than usual. Also the accent of the way she said it sounds as if she’s a foreign person, reason for this could possibly that her character is excited and that positivity could lead that character to speak different than usually…
