Jay z- onto the next one.. RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VISUAL AND LYIRCS The lyrics used in the video are focused on him as an artist being wealthy and rich. The message being portrayed is basically jay z boasting and showing the audience in this video what riches he has. E.g. when talking about his lexis in his lyrics, the visuals show close up shots of a black Lexus. The video uses close ups of the car to make it look more powerful in terms of wealth . Another example would be the Damon skull. Which is one of the most expensive pieces of art. And a copy of that skull is used in his video to show the representations of wealth. Being monochrome as well. represents his wealth as an artist.

Genres and style. • Throughout the video, there is a repetition in the styling of this music video. There is a

constant occurrence of a girl dancing to the music. This is also showing the representations of his wealth . The girl is used to portray the same message as say the car in that he can get anything he wants. The choreograph used is repeated so that there is a continuity throughout the video.

In terms of editing, the dancing and the beats go in time with each other and with the tempo of the track. E.g. when the music stops for a second, the wires which are in motion to the beat stop.

Close ups…

• Close ups are constantly used on the artist. Record companies have a huge demand for this because it basically labels the music video and straight away tells the audience who it is straight away. Close ups also show detail and can make an object or artists look larger, so that the video is more recognisable and for media/ distribution and marketing techniques makes it stay in your head.

In terms of editing, this video shows how it moves on from one image to the next with having a link. E.G this part shows the clown with his back to the camera, then the next shot is of the artist with his back to the camera. This is to show continuity and makes the video flow better.

Star iconography. • Jay z’s music video’s have a pretty recognizable style because he links a lot of them with similar

features, i.e. his logo and black and white. He uses this very well, because as a follower his music style is easily recognised even just by the video’s individually.

• In this video, he makes certain images have a repeated theme so that the video stands out and it also prints him as an artist and props and objects. He cleverly uses liquid and pours it on his objects basically to stamp them and say this is a Jay z video.

The special effects add to the uniqueness of the video, shows its special and niche. The liquid being poured onto the objects has a recurring theme and continues throughout the video.

Overtime this technique is used for Jay z’s star image.

intertextual references.• There is a constant intertextual theme throughout this video. Some of the background people and

purposely dressed in a certain way which in this video’s them, has a link with violence and hero icons. He has done this so that whenever a audience watches a superhero and fighting kind of movie, it will relate the film to the video. They are not exactly the same in terms of dress code and make up, but they are very recognisable of what characters they are meant to represent.

This is possible resembling the kill bill style. The girl has samurai swords and stripes which resembles the film.

This represents the joker from the batman films. The face paint has similar style. This type of photo was possibly used to add an dark and evil effect to the video. Plus the black and white makes it seem more artistic.

Kanye west The good life

• This video definitely shows a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics. Sometimes the lyrics themselves are used to make a animation in the video, possibly to express what he is saying and make it more visible, and stand out more.

Nearly every time, a lyric is said, there is usually some kind of animation resembling the lyrics which are presently being said.

This makes the video stand out and lyrically is more understandable, because the lyrics are expressed as pictures and animations making it stick in your head more.

E.g., when he talk about his car, there is a distinct picture of the artist sitting on the car which he lyrically described in the song.
