Message from the PresidentWelcome to and celebrate the 13th NAWIC Excellence Awards for the Victorian & Tasmanian Chapter. The NAWIC Excellence Awards highlight the women and the organisations that advance the role of women within the construction industry. The success of NAWIC is reliant on the support and contribution of people. Our achievements are directly attributable to the continued commitment of all committee and Council members. I would like to make particular mention of the Awards Committee Chair, Adeline Pang and her committee members. Without the hard work of this group, the Awards Night would not be the success it is every year. NAWIC would like to thank its major and support sponsors for their generous support. These sponsors are a key to the success of the Awards each year. NAWIC also thanks the judges who have made their time and expertise available to review the entrants in each category.

NAWIC seeks to improve the construction industry through the greater participation of women and to contribute to the construction industry by providing leadership, representation and the promotion of women in construction. NAWIC continues to provide support, education and networking for its members and our associates across the industry through events such as the site visits, educational seminars, Postgraduate Scholarships, Trade Scholarships, mentoring, networking events and these Awards. First of all have a great night tonight, why not make it an opportunity to also get involved in NAWIC on a further level on a committee, attend an event or be involved in our mentoring scheme. It will open new doors to you to contributing to the industry and a great networking opportunity.

seA Region Women in Consulting group (WiC), sinclair Knight Merz (sKM)

The judges recognise the Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) SEA WiC group as an innovative, proactive and effective organisation which is successfully advancing the interest of women in construction. Established in 2006, the group provides a strong network for women in consulting, both within and beyond SKM, a forum for discussion of issues and a means of advancing solutions to improve women’s interests in the industry. Through its approach, WiC has gained the respect of and access to the highest echelons of management within SKM, and works regularly with the HR team to improve opportunities and equity.

The group has achieved significant progress in policy for SKM and has also created a network of support across the industry and client base, offering strong business development opportunities. The group has a strong core ethic and substantial drive, providing leadership and exposing the network to role models from across industry. It has developed with the flexibility to simultaneously evolve and grow with issues identified and the changing interests of the organisation. It is commendable and impressive that SEA WiC has developed as a funded business unit within SKM rather than earning an identity as an “outsider” or non-core part of SKM’s work.

This year’s entries for this category documented many remarkable projects that nominees have contributed to with impressive and successful outcomes that were due to their individual efforts. The judges deliberated over many hours before deciding to present this award to the person who is clearly developing in their field of expertise.

Melissa Gesos is a successful person who has enjoyed great support from Hansen Yuncken and has shown unmistakable dedication in her role as Site Coordinator. She brought enthusiasm to the role and was an integral part of the team in achieving the milestones and deliverables in a project with a very difficult delivery method. She has displayed a willingness to research issues to provide informed and productive advice that resulted in a great outcome for the site team and the project. With her employer, the judges are keen to see Melissa continue her development in an industry that will need people of her eagerness and ambition to help deliver projects in the future.

In selecting the award winner this year, the judges agreed to also award a commendation as the high standard of the entries across the various fields in this category warranted this approach.

We are delighted to award Sue Lewis, for her work on Eastlink as the Traffic Manager. Sue has undertaken this role for the duration of the project, over some three and a half years. In arriving at their decision the judges were particularly impressed with Sue’s dedication, strong leadership and discipline demonstrated in her approach to her tasks on this very demanding project.

Sue’s contribution to the project was significant. The sheer impact of Sue’s performance was evidenced by her accomplishments in achieving the project brief to provide a safe, efficient movement of all forms of traffic with minimal delays and disruption to commuters during the construction of the project. Stakeholders and the public appreciated the enormity of the task undertaken by Sue and the team and Sue’s individual diligence and dedication have gained the highest respect from industry.

We congratulate Sue for an admirable performance and we recognise her efforts with this award.

Heidi orchardF.C. Walker (Apprentice tiler)

After weighing submissions against their guidelines, objectives and selection criteria the judges made their collective decision to grant this award to apprentice tiler, Heidi Orchard. Heidi was nominated by Jarrod Flanigan, Career Pathways Officer of the Master Builders Association. In speaking with Heidi it is evident her current achievements all stemmed from her craftwork creations that sold with “popularity” at the St Kilda Esplanade Markets. Her initial craft interest was the catalyst that led to her career within the tiling trade. Along this journey Heidi acquired proficiencies through VCE, Certificate of Stained Glass and Leadlighting, apprenticeship, Mosaic Teaching, and through other experiences including renovation. Heidi has demonstrated determination, dedication and enthusiasm in her industry and in the ongoing training of others. Heidi had to overcome a number of major challenges before successfully turning a hobby into an interesting career. She enjoys the “hands on” experience and the associated creative side of her trade and her future aspirations are to seek international experience in her industry. In speaking with Heidi’s employer it was established that she is held in high esteem and her work style, ethics and qualities are recognised by clients who request her to personally work on their projects. For these many qualities, Heidi has been acknowledged as a worthy recipient for this award.

The judges are pleased to award Tanya Stephens with a commendation in the NAWIC 2008 Bassett Award for Outstanding Achievement in Design for her work on the Clow Residence. Tanya’s attention to detail and passion for design was able to transform the clients’ brief into an excellent example of residential architecture. The design brief from the clients was to create a modern home that capitalises on the magnificent views of the surrounding valley. The hub of the house is a central domain and home theatre with bedrooms located on each flank. A specialised gym was also within the client brief. A large alfresco area, complete with shading pagoda is located with magnificent northern views.

The judges were impressed by Tanya’s ability to integrate the design into the natural surrounds, whilst incorporating a number of sustainability initiatives, which were imperative in the semi rural setting. We are assured that the new owners are delighted with their functional and efficient home! It should be noted that this project was also a category award winning design in the Master Builders Regional Awards for the Best Custom House (over $500,000) and Best Sustainable Energy House. Very early in her studies Alexandra commenced work experience onsite and was soon rewarded with an offer of a Summer Cadetship with Brookfield Multiplex. The result of this opportunity underscored Alexandra’s conviction in the importance of combining study with practice. She believes strongly in the motivational benefits that stem from this cohesion and the right balance of these activities in her life.

Alexandra speaks of the immeasurable experience she gained from relationships with subcontractors, consultants and the labour force that she knows would not have come from studying in isolation

ENTRANT: ANgeleeN JeNKINs COMPANY: McConnell dowell Corporation limited ROLE: director – New Business

Angeleen Jenkins is testimony to the shift in the construction industry’s past stereotypes of men in hard hats and overalls to a contemporary paradigm where women are onsite, discussing construction techniques and entering the fray at sales pitches and contract negotiations. Angeleen has managed to work her way up to Board level by having persistence, intelligence and a clear goal; while never forgetting that at the heart of every business is the people working together to achieve a set objective. Angeleen has over 17 years experience in the engineering and construction industry in both the Australian and international marketplace in management roles of safety, quality, training, sales and strategic development.

Angeleen has spent almost 15 years with McConnell Dowell, serving predominantly corporate head office management functions as well as an offshore post in Asia. She has played important leadership and management roles in the company’s project pursuits, training and development and strategic direction. As a role model for the McConnell Dowell graduates and as champion for the cause of women in the workforce, Angeleen is proof that women can succeed to great heights in a male-dominated industry.

ENTRANT: HeIdI oRCHARdCOMPANY: F.C.Walkers ROLE: Apprentice tiler

Heidi Orchard has demonstrated her high level of determination in entering the building industry at an apprenticeship level as a mature age woman. She has managed to pursue her career by overcoming the obstacles that her age and gender presented in this industry. After completing a stained glass apprenticeship and short course in mosaic work, Heidi gained employment in this field. She found however that she was often delegated reception work more frequently than lead light work, so she began seeking alternative opportunities elsewhere.

The desire to work with her hands led Heidi to work at a community centre “Work Shop It” where she was able to pass on her knowledge and passion to other participants. When Heidi realised tiling would be her preferred career path she successfully obtained an apprenticeship with her current employer.

Her passion to achieve in her trade has reaped rewards for both Heidi and her employer. She has twice won Apprentice of the Year Awards from TAFE and has been awarded two Certificates of Merit from the Master Builders Association of Victoria. In showing this sort of leadership we wish Heidi all the success she deserves.

Jessica McMillan’s connection to the drought-affected region of Gippsland and its small rural communities has made sustainability in the built environment a focus for Jessica during her training to become a qualified draftsperson. However her origins also presented certain challenges for Jessica, but as a determined young professional she managed the difficulties of living in a rural town with a population of only 2,200 to achieve her desired goals.

Jessica’s first hurdle was to obtain a position as a trainee draftsperson which she eventually achieved with Cunningham Design and Drafting. Her next challenge was commuting 135kms to attend night school at Holmesglen TAFE in Trafalgar. After her first year of schooling, the lengthy trip began to take its toll so Jessica enrolled in a correspondence course through the TAFE of Tasmania where she has been receiving excellent marks.

Jessica has a bright future and she remains keen to pass on to other determined trainees the same opportunities she has enjoyed. She has accepted invitation to speak at various regional career nights to give insight into her chosen profession and better prepare those wishing to enter the industry.

ENTRANT: lee WIllIAMsoNCOMPANY: Happy Homes Building group ROLE: director

Hard working Lee Williamson has been driven to succeed since she was a young girl “tinkering around in the shed.” Having to find ways to patch up the many run-down places she was forced to live in fostered her interest in home building even further, and her pragmatic approach seems never to have left her.

Her introduction to alternative construction methods was when she was accepted into a Government funded program for disadvantaged youth to build mud-brick dwelling for the Sisters of Mercy to run life skills programs for other disadvantaged people.

Lee’s interest in building took a commercial turn after working with property investors who bought, renovated and sold properties as a business. After undertaking a number of courses in basic business management skills, photography and computer graphics, Lee launched her career in the business of building.

Currently Lee’s portfolio contains four properties, two of which are in the process of being subdivided. She has played a major role in the designing and planning processes of “Eco- Beach”, a proposed development for an environmentally friendly multi-dwelling two-lot subdivision, and “Korum Cottages” a four-lot subdivision.

Katherine Brewis graduated from The University of Melbourne in 2003 with a double degree in Civil Engineering and Science. She joined Thiess in 2003 as a graduate on the Regional Fast Rail Project, where her primary responsibility was rail-related quality assurance over intensive rail shutdown periods, and also the management and reporting of financial and productivity progress.

Katherine’s most recent role was on the $2.5 billion EastLink project, where she was Site Engineer for the Knox Region between the Mountain Highway and Wellington Road. There, Katherine managed works in two major arterial intersections, including the construction of bridges in built-up areas, over two significant arterial roads with minimal community disruption. Katherine was one of the few Engineers on the project to manage both major earthworks and structures operations simultaneously. She managed bulk excavation, haulage-and-fill operations, retained earth wall structures, noise attenuation structures, staging of works for construction of bridges over arterial roads and associated pavement preparation prior to pavement placement as part of the tollway.

Katherine is already a highly skilled relationship manager and demonstrates insight beyond her years that have made her an invaluable part of the EastLink team, particularly with regard to her ability to read and anticipate potential industrial relations and stakeholder issues.

Lisa Okkonen was the Senior Project Manager (SPM), for The Gauge, Victoria Harbour. In this role, she led the Design and Construct team to achieve a 6 Star Green Star – Office Design Certification Rating – indicating world leadership.

Lisa was also responsible for addressing the change management activities of the project with the client’s representatives in the Victorian region. She championed the client briefing workshops; aspirational brief development and green initiatives through the business to consolidate them into the project design scope of works.

With an initial brief for a 5 Star Green Star Office Design project, Lisa worked with other groups in the business to enhance the project’s green star credentials to achieve the 6 Star Green Star Office Design Certified Rating for the owners. This scope change occurred 10 months into the project, at a stage when the works were well into construction of a relatively short 17 month program.

A number of elements undertaken within the process and evident within the product highlight the significance of the achievement. Many of these now represent the key point of difference of the product within the market place and an opportunity to change the industry.

Merilyn Voight has accomplished a remarkable achievement for Wycombe Constructions Pty Ltd by delivering a very complex $80 million project under budget and to rigorous standards and quality.

The project involved a section of Deakin University not previously developed in Elgar Road, Burwood. Infrastructure to support the development required an upgrade of all services, the reconfiguration of roads and paths to maintain access at all times for the Student Village and other users of the remaining structures. Merilyn’s involvement as Construction Manager commenced in January 2006 after the project had been running for approx eighteen months. Appointed as construction manager halfway through the project, Merilyn not only had to understand the reasoning behind the previous decisions but also acquaint herself with the project status in view of frequently changing client requirements.

As Construction Manager Merilyn ensured that the design team maintained all requirements of the design brief, met allocated budgets and that all construction work occurred on schedule without disruption to the functions of University at all times.

Looking back over the past few years Noelene Foley was astonished when she was first given an apprenticeship with Alan Barnes Electrical Contractor but that surprise soon paled in comparison to the shock of returning to school after 20 years.

She recounts challenges that ranged from being old enough to be her classmates’ mother to learning the functions of a calculator. But Noelene worked hard to get through her training and with her optimistic attitude she enjoyed the positive effects she presented in that environment, such as when she would ask the questions her classmates were too “macho or cool” to ask.

Today, qualified and licensed, Nolene is a self-employed contractor trading as Raymond Island Electrics. But even now she encounters occupational bias such as when dealing with local elderly men who insist on overseeing her work, standing behind her at switchboards and reaching past her to tell her what to do. She has again overcome this particularly dangerous predicament with good humour and common sense and she now works after first setting up a safety barrier with a circle of witches’ hats - one with a flashing light!

Her role has included cost planning and preparing budget estimates for building processes as well as facilitating the construction process in terms of assessing progress payment and preparing cost reports.
