Ben Parker has come a long way from when he first taught himself how to play the trumpet.

The 16-year-old St. Michaels University student is the first trumpet soloist ever to perform at Victoria Symphony Splash, one of the largest orchestra concerts in North America in August.

“I’m very excited and a little bit nervous just because of the sheer scale of the event, but I’m just happy to go out there and play,” Parker said. “It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Parker’s love for the instrument began when he was seven years old.

“My dad used to play the trumpet, but he got braces so he had to stop. He always wanted me to play the trumpet and eventually we went down to the trumpet store and picked one up,” said Parker.

For the first year, he took it upon himself to learn how to play it.

In the past, he played the piano, but after making a “sound right off the bat,” Parker knew the trumpet was the instrument for him.

Thirteen years later, Victoria resident Christine Thate is ready to finish what she started in 2002, the Olympic distance of the Self-Transcendence Triathlon.

“I was registered, I had completed the training and I was prepared to do it when I got sick with a fever, temperature of 104 degrees (Fahrenheit),” Thate said.

The 36th running of the Self-Transcendence Triathlon and Duathlon is Sunday, Aug. 2, starting and

finishing at Hamsterly Beach on Elk Lake. Back in 2002, Thate had done two

sprint distance triathlons, with a 750 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike ride and 5 km run. The jump to the Olympic distance, with a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km bike and a 10 km run, was daunting, but a challenge she wanted to meet.

“I’ve never been comfortable (racing) on the bike,” she said. “I actually still smoked until 2007 too. And now I’m retired, so I have no excuse, I have lots of time to train.”

At 56, Thate has remained active in running and swimming. A member of the Prairie Inn Harriers, she has completed plenty of half marathons and is a regular

participant in the Christie-Phoenix Insurance Victoria Run Series.

“I heard it might be the last (running of the Self Transcendence) race and thought, I have to do this,” Thate said. “And maybe someone will see that

I’m doing it, an ex-smoker, and realize they can do it too. It’s all about staying healthy.”

While reports surfaced earlier this year that 2015 may be the final Self-Transcendence Triathlon and Duathlon in

Victoria, race director Sumitra McMurchy says that’s not true.

There is no decision at this time and a formal announcement will be made following the Aug. 2 event, she said.

McMurchy is thrilled to see athletes such as Thate realizing their dream.

“The Self-Transcendence always aimed to encourage participation of people at all levels, encouraging them to reach a little beyond what they have achieved in the past,” she said.

The Self-Transcendence features a duathlon (5 km run, 40 km bike, 10 km run), and a youth triathlon category, in addition to the Olympic and sprint distances. Relay teams may also compete in the Olympic distance.

New this year is an option for participants to wear a wetsuit in water up to 28 degrees Celsius, where as the previous TriBC ruling banned wetsuits for 22 degrees C and over. However, anyone who chooses to wear a wetsuit in 22 degrees C or more lose eligibility for medals, placements or other awards.

For Thate, the race is a chance to honour her father who died 10 years ago.

“He was a big supporter of my races. He would be here with me bright and early (on race day),” Thate said. “I’m a baby boomer, and you know what, it’s tough. Baby boomers are in the same position of losing our parents or watching our parents age. This is a tribute for him.”

Witnessing her grandfather fight a painful five year battle with colon cancer, Diane Luszniak remembers having a difficult time watching his quality of life deteriorate.

“Part of the impact of cancer, for me, is seeing how it’s hard to just live your life while you have cancer, it’s not just trying to survive, it’s trying to have quality of life,” says Luszniak, a reserve constable with the Victoria Police Department.

It’s Luszniak’s hope to help improve the lives of cancer patients that motivated her to join the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock. As one of 21 riders on this year’s team, Luszniak hopes to make a difference by raising funds for pediatric cancer research.

Originally from Nanaimo, Luszniak has always been aware of Tour de Rock and says she is inspired by what the organization does for children affected by cancer.

“It’s always been something that sticks to the back of your mind as the worst form of disease, is cancer,” Luszniak says. “If I’ve watched an adult try to live through cancer, what would that be like for a child?”

While Luszniak is riding in memory of her grandfather and other family members lost to cancer, she also finds inspiration in the spirit of her fellow Tour riders, all of whom have been affected by cancer in some way.

“It’s partly thinking [about] the family members and wishing they could see what you’re trying to do to try to make a difference for someone else, and the other is the other team

members, seeing what some of them have gone through to be where they are,” Luszniak says. “To see people push through that, and draw on that, has been really inspiring as well.”

Drawing from the strength of her Tour team has come in many forms. For Luszniak, the most enjoyable part of training for the 1,000-kilometre journey down the length of Vancouver Island has been working with the team and learning from them.

“I really like the team experience and learning from the other people that are on your team, and the fact

that because you have this group support you’re not on your own but you don’t have to be good at everything because someone on the team will have that strength,” she explains.

Looking ahead at the Tour, which kicks off in Port Alice on Sept. 20, Luszniak is eager

to connect with the people she meets along the ride.

“(Former riders) talk a lot about this being a life changing experience, and I feel like there’s lots of elements that have already happened for me,” she says.

“No one remembers the [physical] ride because they remember all the interactions and experiences they have with the people, so I’m really looking forward to that connection, to meeting people and connecting with them and hearing their stories, and as much as I’m sure at times it is going to be difficult, where there will be no dry eye in the house. That’s what I’ve heard so much about and that’s what I’m looking forward to being a part of.”

Read more about Luszniak’s experience by following Tour de Rock Diane Luszniak on Facebook.

Many hearts, one mind. That’s the slogan behind the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, a two-week bicycle journey along the length of Vancouver Island to raise funds for the fight against childhood cancer.

Throughout the 1,000-kilometre, two-week ride, riders will make 122 stops in 27 communities including 46 schools. Since its inception in 1998, Tour de Rock has raised more than $20 million for the Canadian Cancer Society, with last year’s efforts totaling more than $1.1 million.

The 2015 team includes 21 riders, comprised of members from the RCMP, military police, municipal police and a media rider.

The Victoria Police Department has released video footage of an armed robbery at a medical marijuana dispensary last week in hopes the public can help identify the person responsible.

On Thursday, July 23 at approximately 9 p.m., a man entered Farmacy (3055 Scott St.) and pointed what appeared to be a hand gun and a knife at the clerk. The suspect gave the clerk a black garbage bag and ordered them to fill it with drugs and cash.

Once the clerk filled the bag, the suspect ran into his vehicle and sped away.

The male suspect is believed to be Caucasian, approximately five feet, eight inches tall with a tattoo around his right eye.

His get-away vehicle is described as a 2006 to 2009 tan-coloured Pontiac Torrent with no license plates. The suspect was last seen near North Dairy and Shelbourne Streets.

If you have any information on the suspect, the vehicle or the crime, please call VicPD’s non-emergency number at 250-995-7654 or through CrimeStopper at 1-800-222-8477.

The University of Victoria Vikes had a lot to celebrate following the July 26 closing

ceremonies of the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Ont. Twenty-one former or current Vikes competed in the games across five different sports most getting on the podium in a year where Canada broke its Pan Am record-winning 78 gold medals with a total of 217 medals. To start off the games a long list of Vikes helped Canada defend the title for the men’s rugby sevens. Late heroics from Harry Jones lifted the Canadians up 22-19 over Argentina to claim gold and secure a spot in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Vikes Nathan Hirayama, Sean Duke, Phil Mack, John Moonlight, Justin Douglas, Mike Fuailefau and Lucas Hammond were all a part of the team. On the water Vikes rowers helped Canada win five medals, all of which were gold. Former Vike Kai Langerfeld won gold in both the coxless four and the eights. Coxswain and current Vike Jacob Koudys was also a part of the golden eights crew. Nicholas Pratt helped Canada win gold in the lightweight four in 6:42.40. Former Vike Saul Garcia helped Canada to a fifth-place finish in the lightweight double with crew mate Mark Henry. In women’s rowing, Antje Von Seydlitz topped the podium twice,

first in the women’s double in 7:13.01 and again in the quad in 7:07.63. In swimming former Vike Ryan Cochrane set a new Pan American record in the 400-m and 1500-m freestyle, while topping the podium in both events. Cochrane finished the 1500-m in 15:06.40 and completed the 400-m in 3:48.29. Alec Page and Cochrane took home a bronze in the 4x200-m relay alongside team mates

Stefan Milosevic and Jeremy Bagshaw. Hilary Caldwell won gold in the 200-m backstroke and also set a new Pan Am record of 2:08.22. Former Vikes cross-country and track runner Ellen Pennock competed in the women’s triathlon. Pennock was the top Canadian finishing sixth overall in 1:58.24 just 1:24 behind the leader, Barbara Riveros of Chile. On the pitch, former Vikes Kaitlyn Williams, Thea Culley and Danielle Hennig guided a young Canadian women’s field hockey team to its first Pan Am medal since 1999. Following a disappointing

fourth-place finish in 2011, the Canadians came back to rival their opponents Chile, winning 1-0 in the bronze-medal match. Hennig and Culley were vice captains on the team, while Williams back-stopped the team in goal in all six matches. In men’s field hockey former Vikes Brenden Bissett and Matthew Sarmento helped earned Canada a spot back on the Olympic stage.

Following a thrilling shoot-out win in the semifinals against Brazil, Canada booked their ticket to the 2016 Rio Olympics while also qualifying for the Pan American Games gold-medal game for the 11th consecutive year. Despite falling 3-0 to a powerful Argentina team in the final, Bissett, Sarmento and team Canada left Toronto with a silver medal and the gratification of earning an Olympic berth. Cholesterol is a fatty substance your body needs to rebuild its cells and to make certain hormones.

there are 2 important types of cholesterol you should know about:• Low density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol• High density lipoprotein (HDL) or “good” cholesterol

Many factors determine whether your lDl cholesterol is high or low, including:• Diet• Weight• Level of physical activity• Age (cholesterol levels increase with age)• Gender (men have higher cholesterol)• Heredity

Another cause of high cholesterol is eating foods that are high in saturated fats and cholesterol.

LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream can settle as fatty deposits on the inside of your blood vessels.

High cholesterol usually has no obvious symptoms.

If there’s a likelihood that you have high cholesterol, your doctor will order a simple blood test to check your cholesterol level.

You can get symptoms from the complications of high cholesterol. These include angina and pain in the calves caused by narrowed arteries to the legs. The main complications of high cholesterol are heart disease and stroke.

“I really like the sound and the way it feels when you’re playing. It resonates with your mouth and lungs. It’s just very intimate when you’re playing it,” said Parker who plays with the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra.

“I would just play tunes I was inspired to play. I’m still American, so I played the Star Spangled Banner every day. I just learned note for note what the tunes were and that gave me good ear training methods to learn the instrument.”

Parker has been practicing for his debut at Symphony Splash where he will be performing the Arutunian trumpet concerto, a piece he’s quite familiar with.

Parker is one of two soloists who will be performing at the

26th annual Victoria Symphony Splash on Sunday, Aug. 2. The concert fundraiser supports education and outreach programs of the Victoria Symphony and is expected to draw as many as 45,000 people to the Inner Harbour.

“In the past, we’ve focused on music and getting people to listen and this year Tania Miller has chosen music that will really get people up and engaged with the music by dancing,” said Sarah Head, marketing

and splash coordinator. “We hope people will have a greater appreciation of orchestra and classical music.”

The event also includes a family zone, food vendors, fireworks and performances by soloist Rebecca Bracewell and The Midnights from 1-9:45 p.m.

An international traveller has been reunited with his camera containing footage of his trip in Canada all thanks to the efforts of a Victoria man.

On Sunday, July 19, a group of people were walking around the Breakwater Market at Odgen Point when they noticed a Nixon D700 camera left on a bench by the gorge.

After 30 minutes of waiting for the owners to return, the group decided to turn it into the information tent at the market.

The camera then made its way into Larry Freeman’s hands and the market manager jumped into action to identify the owner.

“I had a quick look through the pictures and found a picture of their motor home with the license plate number and the Fraserway RV contact information on it,” he said.

Over the next few days, Freeman tried contacting the RV rental company to forward his information to the camera owner. The owner then contacted Freeman and told them they had already left town.

Through a series of emails, the duo coordinated to have the camera shipped via Air Canada to Prince Rupert, which was the travellers’ next destination.

And on Friday, the owner was

reunited with his camera.Stephan Braun is a tourist

from Germany who was travelling across Canada with his wife in an RV.

He had only been in Victoria for a day when he lost the camera.

“It was our second day in Canada and it was jet lag and stress and I lost the camera. I had nothing to take photos with then I got an email from Fraserway who said Larry had the camera. It’s my hobby. I was very, very happy to have it back” said Braun with a laugh.

“I was very surprised because the people were are

very friendly. In Europe and Germany, there are too many people in one place, here there are less people in Canada so maybe that is the reason why people come together better and are more friendly, Larry Freeman is a good example.”

Freeman is just happy he could return the camera to its rightful owner.

“It was an expensive camera for one, and the other thing is that if I lost my camera when I was on holiday like that, I hope someone would go through the effort to do that for me as well,” Freeman said.

OUR VIEW

One of the rituals of life in southern B.C. communities is cross-border shopping for certain items.

Even corner store owners are known to pop down to Washington border towns to load up a van with U.S. milk, taking advantage of a price difference generated by our “supply management” system.

The recent slide in the Canadian dollar reduces this pressure in the short term, but the fact remains that dairy producers are propped up in Canada. And that’s increasingly a problem as Canada pursues entry into the Trans Pacific Partnership, the next big trade deal. With the U.S., Japan, Australia, New Zealand and other countries involved, it would form the largest trading bloc in the world.

Canada uses tariffs of up to 300 per cent to protect its dairy and poultry industries from foreign imports, and the higher domestic price on milk and eggs is a burden that falls most heavily on poor people.

The industry group Dairy Farmers of Canada and others argue that reducing or removing Canada’s import protection won’t change the huge farm subsidies paid by European and U.S. governments. The recent trade agreement between Canada and the European Union has already chipped away at this protection.

The Conservative government is

tiptoeing on this issue as a fall election approaches, with rural seats across the country at stake. But the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand have deregulated their dairy industries and the Canadian industry is already

facing increased cheese imports due to the European Union agreement.

It’s an issue to watch as the federal election heats up. The NDP has positioned itself as a defender of supply management, a particularly touchy issue in rural Quebec, while the federal Liberals are committed to keeping up with the U.S. and joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

The trend toward freer trade is broad and long. The Harper government

ended the monopoly of the Canadian Wheat Board in 2012, and grain growers continue to compete globally. A trade deal with Korea saw tariffs come off Korean import vehicles, and life goes on.

Another controlled and protected commodity that is seldom discussed is logs. That’s changed with the push for the Trans Pacific Partnership, as Japan protests federal and provincial restrictions that push up the cost of logs for export.

Ottawa regulates the export of private land logs, but only in B.C. This is a long-standing irritant for private land owners, holding the domestic price for premium

“J grade” Douglas fir logs below $80 per cubic metre while the price in Asia and Washington state has climbed above $100.

The U.S. has long complained about B.C.’s cheap Crown land stumpage and low domestic log prices in general, viewing them as a subsidy to lumber production.

Indeed, this whole protection apparatus is designed to stimulate domestic milling, although it doesn’t seem to be working. The main investment by B.C. forest companies recently has been buying southern U.S. sawmills.

The coastal industry has maintained that profits from log exports are keeping logging alive, paying for the harvest and processing of logs in B.C.

With Pacific trade talks in the background, pushed hard by U.S. President Barack Obama, the latest Canada-U.S. lumber agreement is due to expire in October. It will be more difficult to defend what University of Alberta economist Jack Mintz calls a “Soviet-style approach to price determination.”

B.C. used to do something similar to this with wine, protecting a backward industry cranking out mostly god-awful plonk. Competition made the wine industry better, and now it’s world class.

Young men should heed risk of drowning

Nothing beats the heat quite like taking a dip, whether it’s inching into the water up to your knees, taking a couple of cooling strokes or enjoying a full-blown invigorating swim. And with no end in sight to our unseasonably hot summer, more and more people are taking the plunge this year.

Victoria’s stretches of shoreline entice locals and visitors alike for both swimming and boating.

At the risk of putting a damper on anyone’s idea of innocent fun, it’s important to remember that safety should always come first before you venture into or onto the water.

Two devastating accidents on Vancouver Island this summer, one at Sproat Lake which claimed the life of a Greater Victoria man and the other which saw a young rugby player visiting from England drown in Shawnigan Lake, underscore the need to remind people of the potential for deadly consequences when in or on the water.

In June, the BC Coronors Service released a report that said messages around water safety, supervision, boater safety, alcohol use, lifejacket/PFD use and pool safety are not getting through, particularly to young men.

Of 35 drowning deaths between 2007 and 2013, almost seven in 10 involved youths aged 15 to 18, and three-quarters of those who died were male. The cases show that males in that age group are particularly prone to underestimate the risk involved in activities, overestimate their own swimming abilities, and use substances, such as alcohol, which may affect their judgment, co-ordination and/or ability to self-rescue.

You can’t take too many precautions on or near the water. Remember, alcohol and water conspire to form a deadly cocktail that can make the raft appear closer, or that dive from a cliff less daunting.

We encourage you to responsibly enjoy all the pleasures the water has to offer this summer and to take a few minutes while you’re checking your cell phone or waiting for the sunscreen to dry to surf over to redcross.ca for lifesaving advice in, on and around the water.

The Victoria Fire Department has burned through more than half of its suppression budget putting out fires this year, a majority of which were caused by people.

According to deputy fire chief Doug Carey, the department has committed more than 57 per cent of its suppression budget in 2015.

“That’s in keeping with where we should be around this time of year. We’re about 58 per cent because we’re 7/12th of the year complete,” said Carey. “We’re slightly below, which is a good thing.”

The suppression budget includes firefighter salaries, benefits, firefighter clothing and telecommunications.

Between Jan, 1 and July 29, the department was called to 245 beach fires, more than double the number of beach fires it was called to the previous year.

Carey said the number has increased so dramatically because they recently changed how they document incident reports. “The 118 represents the number of incident reports in our fire department reporting database. Each of those incident reports could have been two or three fires, but we weren’t tracking it that way,” he said. “Now the firefighters fill out a table at the end of their night, and that’s why we’re having a higher number … that means there have been 245 fires extinguished this year.”

There have also been 52 mulch fires over the last seven months,

while there were only 35 in the same period in 2014. The number of vehicle fires also jumped to nine from three the previous year.

“The beach fires are all deliberately set by people. It’s people who have just disregarded the bylaw or been ignorant of the bylaws,” Carey said. “The mulch fires, the most common cause of those are cigarette butts.”

In Esquimalt, residents are being extra vigilant, said fire chief Chris Jancowski.

He added they’ve seen a reduction in the number of calls over the past week, mainly due to the cooler conditions.

Carey hopes the public will be extra vigilant when discarding cigarettes.

The Victoria Police Department is searching for witnesses to a late-night stabbing in downtown Victoria last week.

On Sunday, July 26, officers were called to the 1100-block of Wharf St. just after midnight for reports of a man who had been stabbed.

They found a 32-year-old Saanich man had been stabbed on his side. Staff at Darcy’s Pub were alerted and began first aid.

The man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Detectives learned the victim spoke to two women on the corner of Wharf

and Fort streets after the alleged stabbing.

The pair were described as South-Asian women in their 20s. Both were wearing dresses.

Detectives would like to speak to the women in hopes they might shed light on what happened.

If you have any information about this crime, or know the two women, please call VicPD on the non-emergency line at 250-995-7654. Information on this, or any crime, can also be reported anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Diesel will do if a hybrid is too priceyVW has one of the most comprehen-sive diesel vehicle lineups in Canada. Mercedes-Benz offers quite a few variants, as does BMW and Chevrolet has their Cruze Diesel (Note: I’m talk-ing about vehicles rather than trucks). If you’re looking to go further on a single tank without moving into a hybrid, perhaps diesel might be the best option for you.VW has a plethora of cars to choose from and an SUV. Whether you need something with lots of cargo space, a sedan that looks great, or off-road ready sport ute, VW has you covered. There’s the über popular Golf. The seventh generation vehicle was named the North American Car of the year for 2015. It’s not hard to see why. There are quite a few body styles to choose from whether you want a three-door, a five-door, or a Sportwagon. And both the Sportwagon and five-door give drivers the option of a 2.0L, four-cylinder, TDI engine.

Horsepower specs come in at 150, while it produces an impressive 236 lb-ft of torque. That torque is reached as low as 1,750-3,500 rpm.The main difference between the two aforementioned models is the Sportwagon is a new trim for 2015 and it has 860 L of cargo space. The five-door has 490L with the parcel shelf up and 670L with the shelf off.The Golf TDI has a starting MSRP of $23,095 and the Sportwagon starts at $24,995.If neither of those tickle your fancy, consider the Jetta TDI.This four-door sedan is stylish yet

yields great fuel economy numbers; 7.7L/100km in the city and 5.2L/100km in the city. That’s on top of getting hundreds of kilometres out of one fill up. Starting at just $22,490, it deserves all the praise it is given.Having tested the Jetta TDI Highline trim (which starts at $29,690) you get such features 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-way power driver’s seat with

manual lumbar support, fog lights, leather seating surfaces, a power sunroof, and LED signature day-time running lights. While it might not be everyone’s first choice in colour, the Jetta diesel’s Toffee Brown Metallic looks like a cold glass of root beer on wheels. Yum. I found it to be refreshing and different. As for the ride and handling, this Jetta does not disappoint. One of my favourite features – aside from the 150 horsepower and 236 horsepower from its 2.0L, turbo engine – is how it handles. The steering weight gives enough feedback to the driver to make tight turns engaging. And when paired with the DSG transmission, not only is city traffic more manageable, but less work for your left leg!If you find yourself towing a lot, or even wanting to go off the straight and narrow, consider the 2015 VW Touareg TDI. With ample room for five inside, this SUV comes with all the right touches. The refreshed interior styling is appealing to those who want a posh truck, without paying the price of its familiar equivalents: the Porsche Cayenne Diesel or the Audi Q7 TDI.The Touareg’s starting MSRP comes in at $55,275.

The Execline is the top-of-the-line trim and starts at $69,575. That’s a decent amount of coin, and it’s not for everyone, but all trims of Touareg come with the same great 3.0L, turbocharged, V6 engine offer-ing 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. This engine is then linked with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The panoramic sunroof lets copious amount of daylight onto the Terracotta Brown Vienna Leather seats and the cabin. A strong point of VWs, as long as I can remember, is how its cabin says so much with saying so little. For example: the centre stack. The perfect combination of buttons and touchscreen make the infotainment so easy to use and one that is not hard to navigate. Then there’s the fuel economy. In the city, it uses an estimated 12.0L/100km and 8.1L/100km on the highway. Not bad for a vehicle that weighs in at 2,130 kg and has all-wheel drive. There are a couple more TDI options for you, too. There’s the larger Passat sedan and then there’s the funky Beetle.Visit www.vw.ca for more information.

Blood donors are urgently needed in the Capital Region.

The national blood inventory has steadily declined this summer and needs a boost to continue to meet the needs of patients through the August long weekend and into the coming weeks.

Canadian Blood Services is asking people to give blood before and after the long weekend.

“Summer is a challenging time for blood collection, when many regular donors are on vacation –this is great time for new donors to join us and help prevent a further decline in the national inventory,” says Mark Donnison, vice president of donor relations. “Platelets derived from blood are critical to help stop bleeding and unfortunately

expire just five days after a blood donation.”

The Canada Safety Council reports that more fatalities occur on Canadian roads during summer months than any other time of year. It can take up to 50 donors to help save someone who has been in a motor vehicle accident.

Victoria area residents can give blood at the Victoria Clinic, 3449 Saanich Road, which is open Thursday, July 30 from 10:30 a.m. to

6:30 p.m.; Friday, July 31 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and on Saturday, Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To book an appointment to give blood, use the Give Blood App or visit blood.ca.

Those with appointments are encouraged to keep their appointment and, if possible,

bring a friend or family member to donate with them. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Go to blood.ca or call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) to book an appointment.

Blood supplies low

Quick Facts• Ideally, Canadian Blood Services should have 20,000 to 30,000 units of blood in its inventory.• Canadian Blood Services needs to collect a minimum of 16,000 units of blood each week to meet the needs of patients• Platelets expire after 5 days• Red blood cells expire after 42 days• Plasma expires after one year

Carrier of the month

great job

carriers!broDeY

Hi! My name is Brodey and I’ve been a carrier for about a year now, and I like the responsibility of having a job. It’s also nice meeting new people and stuff like that. Some of my favorite things to do are playing my instruments (I play flute, alto sax, viola and i’m learning how to play the baritone sax and the trombone.) and playing magic the gathering with my friends. I have been doing karate for the last 7 or 6 years so that’s a big part of my life... Anyways I’d like to thank Victoria news for this awesome opportunity gaining experience and for recognition as paper carrier of the month

Congratulations Brodey on being “Carrier of the Month” and for always delivering your paper with a smile.

Call 250-360-0817 to start your route.

HMCS Quadra to perform at the B.C. legislature

More than 250 teenaged cadets from Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Quadra will take to the B.C. Legislature Lawn on Saturday, Aug. 1, as part of their annual Cer-emony of the Flags perfor-mance.

The performance will feature a 96 member guard, 75 cadets manning the flag party and naval field guns and a 55 member marching band.

The cadets come from across Canada and are 14- to 18-years-old. The dis-tinctly Canadian Ceremony of the Flags was originally created and performed by the Royal Canadian Navy in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s Centennial. The national

flag of Canada and the flags of each province and terri-tory are paraded together in a celebration of nation-hood.

The ceremony combines elements of the ancient ceremonies of The Tat-too, Sunset Ceremony and Retreat and is a showcase of military precision, pag-eantry and discipline.

Cdr. (Ret) Dave Yates, President of Navy League of Canada will be the guest of honour and reviewing officer for the performance.

HMCS Quadra is a cadet summer training center in Comox, B.C. The training center is currently home to 600 cadets undergoing two, three or six-week training

courses, supervised by more than 200 staff cadets and Canadian Forces mem-bers.

Sea Cadets is a national youth program for boys and girls aged 12 – 18, jointly sponsored by the Department of National Defense/Canadian Forces and the civilian Navy League of Canada.

The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. with the con-tingent stepping off Cormo-rant Street through down-town Victoria on Douglas Street then onto Wharf Street, then Government Street towards the legisla-ture.

It will conclude at 9 [email protected]

Wilson’s Walk, a 108 unit rental project at 105 Wilson St. in Victoria’s Vic West neighbourhood, finally got underway earlier this month.

The project is the long awaited phase two of the Wing Development, also constructed by TL Housing Solutions of Vancouver.

“It’s very exciting for us,” said Mary Ellen Van Dusen, interim executive director for Pacifica Housing. “This is the largest project that Pacifica has undertaken. This has the largest number of units.”

Pacifica Housing is a non-profit charitable organization that provides affordable housing for low income families, persons with a disability and adults who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

The building was designed by Low Hammond Rowe Architects, recent winner of four awards of excellence for various projects on Vancouver Island at the 2015 Vancouver Island Commercial Building Awards, sponsored by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board.

“It’s been in the works five years or more,” said Paul Hammond, of Low Hammond Rowe Architects. “The previous development that failed there had started foundation work.”

The new development will make use of the existing perimeter walls that were previously constructed, but some interior work will be removed to make way for the new nine storey building which features 136 underground and surface parking stalls.

Of the 108 units, 84 will be subsidized and 24 made available

at near market rates. Subsidized units will consist of 42 bachelor, 28 one-bedroom and 14 three-bedroom apartments. Market units will comprise of 12 bachelor, eight one-bedroom and four three-bedroom apartments.

Its sister project, The Wing is adjacent to the Westside Village Shopping Centre. The Wing offers a mix of studio, one and two bedroom apartments as well as two and three bedroom loft style units. Units on the second

and third floors are available to individuals or families whose gross annual household income falls between $30,000 and $54,000. There are no income requirements for units on the first or fourth floor.

Pacifica is a large provider of housing in the Capital Region. “This will make 33 for us. We have five in Nanaimo and one in Duncan, the rest are in Greater Victoria,” said Van Dusen.

Wilson’s Walk is one of

the newest and fewest rental properties in the area and is an easy walk to downtown.

“The existing underground parking will link to the underground parking for the new building and include bicycle storage as well,” said Hammond.

He said their mandate was to design affordable housing and the key to that is repetition.

“It’s straight forward design. Each floor is the same. There are 12 units on each floor and they all line up,” he said. However, clever use of colour and materials will be used in order to make the building unique.

“We still want to create an interesting project. On the facade we’ll use a mix of coloured material and shift the balcony connections, stagger them … we’ll have two different combinations of oscillating balconies and layer coloured glass panels between each suite, which doesn’t change the cost because every unit needs a balcony and railings, we’re just changing the colour mix to create interest.”

The same creative use of colour will be used in the interior space as well.

The project is being constructed by TL Housing Solutions for Pacifica Housing Advisory Association.

The project is expected to be complete by December, 2016.

“We expect it will immediately serve the needs of working folks, service industry employees in the downtown area. They will be able to walk to work across the new bridge,” said Van Dusen.

BC Housing provided $2.64 million for the project, a further $1.26 million came from the CRD, $840,000 from the City of Victoria and $10,000 from CMHC.

Question of the WeekDoes the advent of camera technology in vehicles and reliance upon it threaten to diminish individual driver skills?

Safety Tip:Over the B.C. Day long weekend, on average, four people are killed

and 530 injured in crashes in B.C. Long drives and hot summer weather can be a deadly combination that can cause driver fatigue. Take rest breaks every two hours or switch drivers to avoid driver fatigue.

OF THE WEEK!

?QUESTION

Diesel will do if a hybrid is too priceyVisit the gallery at DrivewayCanada.ca

‘‘While it might not be everyone’s first choice in colour, the Jetta diesel’s Toffee Brown Metallic looks like a cold glass of root beer on wheels.’’Alexandra Straub

VW has one of the most comprehensive diesel vehi-cle lineups in Canada. Mercedes-Benz offers quite a few variants, as does BMW and Chevrolet has their Cruze Diesel (Note: I’m talking about vehicles rather than trucks). If you’re looking to go further on a single tank without moving into a hy-brid, perhaps diesel might be the best option for you.VW has a plethora of cars to choose from and an SUV. Therefore, whether you need something with lots of cargo space, a sedan that looks great, or off-road ready sport ute, VW has you covered. For example, there’s the über popular Golf.

That torque is reached as low as 1,750-3,500 rpm.The main difference between the two aforementioned models is, that the Sportwagon is a new trim for 2015 and it has 860 L of cargo space. The five-door has 490L with the parcel shelf up and 670L with the shelf off.The Golf TDI has a start-ing MSRP of $23,095 and the Sportwagon starts at $24,995.

But if neither of those models tickle your fancy, consider the Jetta TDI.This four-door sedan is stylish yet yields some great fuel economy numbers; 7.7L/100km in the city and 5.2L/100km in the city. That’s on top of getting hun-dreds of kilometres out of one fill up. Starting at just $22,490, it deserves all the praise it is given.Having tested the Jetta TDI Highline trim (which starts at $29,690) you get such features 17-inch alloy wheels, a six-way power driver’s seat with manual

lumbar support, fog lights, leather seat-ing surfaces, a power sunroof, and LED signature daytime running lights. The refreshed interior design and styling is highly appealing to those who want a posh truck, without paying the equivalent price of its familiar equiv-alents: the Porsche Cayenne Diesel or the Audi Q7 TDI.The Touareg’s starting MSRP comes in at $55,275 and goes from there.

The Execline is the top-of-the-line trim and starts at $69,575. Okay, that’s a decent amount of coin, and it’s not for everyone, but all trims of Touareg come with the same great 3.0L, turbocharged, V6 engine offering 240 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. This engine is then linked with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The panoramic sunroof lets in a copious amount of daylight onto the Terracotta Brown Vienna Leather seats and into the cabin. A strong point of VWs as long as I can remember is how its cabin says so much

with saying so little. For example: the centre stack. The perfect com-bination of buttons and touch-screen make the infotainment so easy to use and one that is not hard to navigate. Then there’s the fuel economy.

In the city, it uses an estimated 12.0L/100km in the city and 8.1L/100km on the highway. Not bad for a vehicle that weighs in at 2,130 kg and has all-wheel drive. There are a couple more TDI options for you, too. There’s the larger Passat sedan and then there’s the funky Beetle.Visit www.vw.ca for more information.

New Ford camera sees around corners

1987 Buick Grand National GNX

By Keith Morgan

Ford is introducing new ve-hicle camera technology that can help see around corners even when drivers cannot, aiding in reducing driver stress and potentially averting accidents. The new available split-view camera feature helps drivers see traffic and obstacles that enter the vehicle’s path from the side by displaying a 180-degree view of the area in front of or behind a vehicle. Split view uses real-time video feeds from 1-megapixel wide-angle lens cameras in the grille and tailgate. A tri-panel display in the 8-inch screen helps customers understand quickly whether an obstacle is coming from either side or straight on. Split view is activated at the touch of a button and automatically shuts off when vehicle speed reaches 10 km/h.Ford introduced split view on the 2015 Ford Edge and 2016 Explorer in the United States and China. Front split view is offered on Edge. Front and rear split view comes standard in the Unit-ed States on the 2016 Explorer Limited on sale now and Explorer Platinum, on sale soon. Front split view is coming to the all-new Ford S-MAX and Galaxy in Europe, available to order now. Split view will be offered on nearly all Ford SUVs globally by 2020.A tiny telescopic jet washer keeps the front camera clean on every vehicle

with split view. Explorer also incorpo-rates a washer for the rear camera.Ford plans to make rear-view cameras standard on all of its North American light passenger vehicles by 2018 – and front cameras available on a majority of its vehicles globally by volume by 2020 – meaning the company plans to put more than 2 million new cameras a year on the road.Ford introduced rear-view cameras in the 2007 Expedition and now offers an available backup camera in every Ford car, SUV and light truck in North America. Backup cameras are standard in Focus, Fusion, Explorer, Escape, Edge and Mustang. The next Ford Super Duty will offer the company’s most advanced camera technology, helping with lane-keeping assistance and enabling customers to see more angles around a truck and trailer than ever before. The 2016 F-150 has up to five cameras available, the most of any vehicle in

the Ford lineup. Four cameras in F-150 are mounted in the outside mirrors, and rear and front of the vehicle to enable a 360-degree view and backup view functions.A forward-looking camera mounted behind the rearview mirror is used to activate auto high beams and lane-keeping assist, which looks for lane deviations. The driver never sees the image from this camera, but the vehicle’s computer uses the visual sig-nal to operate the rest of the system.Ford cameras are tested under ex-treme conditions – beyond what they will endure during a typical vehicle lifetime. Each camera component is subjected to more than 1,000 hours of testing to make sure it can withstand temperature changes, humidity, dust, salt and more. Ford engineers also im-merse cameras to confirm the casing does not let water leak [email protected]

The Sooke Region Museum has curated a temporary exhibit in honour of the Pacific Jamboree for Boy Scouts hosted by Camp Barnard this July.

The exhibit was researched by Miranda Siklenka, a summer collections student, and will be on display until the end of this month. On display is information on the origins of scouting, activity in the Sooke region and several artifacts.

The Boy Scouts and Girl Guides organizations were founded by Lord Baden-Powell in the early 1900s. After he held his first camp for boys on Brownsea Island in England in 1907, the scouting movement quickly became an international phenomenon that included girls too.

The Pacific Jamboree is hosted by the B.C. Yukon Councils and is held every four years. Camp Barnard has accommodated the Jamboree numerous times, the last time it was held here was in 1987.

Starting as Beaver Scouts, children from the ages five to seven years are integrated into an environment intended to nurture spirituality, self-awareness, appreciation of nature, caring, and sharing. At eight to10 years old, the children continue as Cub Scouts (previously Wolf Cubs). In this period, facing challenges is encouraged as indicated by their motto, “Do Your Best.” Upon reaching Scout level the youths, aged 11 to 14 years, follow the Scouts motto, “Be Prepared.” This entails a focus on citizenship, leadership, personal development, and outdoor skills, all of which can be awarded with a variety of merit-based badges.

The largest artifact on display was donated by Mae Linell and is a wooden totem from the 1st Sooke Cub Pack (2002.017.015). The totem is a wolf’s head on a stand. The entire object is painted brown, white and red. Linell played an influential role in the progress of scouting in Sooke. She was a Cub leader for 40 years and was awarded the Governor-General’s Medal of Merit for distinguished service to scouting. Mae’s size 7 wool Stetson hat that she wore as a leader is also in the exhibit (2009.030.001a-c).

Additionally, this exhibit showcases instructional booklets for Scouts. One booklet tells the life story of founder Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell (1987.055.027). The 48-page sepia tone booklet was published by the Canadian General Council of the Boy Scouts Association in Ottawa, Canada. Another booklet on display is called The Scout’s Reciter and Elocutionary Instructor (2015.FIC.509) and was printed and bound in Glasgow by James Brown and Son Ltd in 1925. This 42-page resource shares information on how scouts should present themselves (eg. breathing and stance) and has verses, speeches and mottos that should be memorised. Other artifacts on display include badges and uniform attire.

The Sooke Region Museum would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Royal B.C. Museum, The Maritime Museum of B.C. and the Gap Factory Store (Westshore Mall) for the loan of several mannequins and dress forms that have been used in our summer exhibit titled Fashion Files: Dressing Sooke.
