These five new initiatives will not only sustain but propel the VCM into an extraordinary future. We are embracing the future with a bold vision: to bring more music, to more people, in more communities; with your help we can achieve this!

Expanding the VCM to include all genres: rock, pop, jazz, folk, and more.

Providing a new way of how to create, write, record, and produce music, using cutting-edge advances in Music Technology.

To serve the growing population of families, the first VCM satellite location will be in the new YM/YWCA complex in Langford.

To bring the benefits of music education to an additional 1,000 children in daycares, preschools, under-served schools, and marginalized populations.

A new East Wing roof, sound and lighting upgrades, and floor and window repairs are all critical to a safe, comfortable performance and learning experience.

What’s New for 2015/16The Chwyl Family School of Contemporary MusicArtistic Director Daniel Lapp• An all-new season of Tuesday evening workshops and jam sessions on offer, starting at

7:45pm the VCM’s Wood Hall or 7:30pm in VCM’s Metro Theatre, and featuring a number of incredibly talented musicians. Watch for the new schedule appearing on the VCM website in September.

• The new Large Contemporary Ensemble, led by Daniel Lapp, explores a wide variety of contemporary musical genres in Folk, Pop, Rock, Jazz & Fusion (see page 13).

• Legendary Singer/Songwriter Colleen Eccleston joins the VCM-SCM this year to lead Family Choir (page 12)

• Family Band (page 16) with Adam Dobres - something for the whole family!• World Renowned Scottish Piper James Troy is not only the #1 source for pipe reeds in

the world, which are made right here in Victoria, but will also teach you how to play this glorious instrument.

• Two new Play Piano Chords Today Workshops offered by Linda Gould (page 13) feature a “Music Lunch-Break” and “How to Accompany a Sing-along”.

School of Music Technology and Creativity• The highly-acclaimed animated computer software-based

music program Children’s Music Journey, for children ages 5 - 8, which teaches children the fundamentals of music and develops their piano keyboard skills, while allowing them to be creative through composing and recording their own music from the first lesson!

• New for teens and adults: Sound-walks: Listening and the Creative Process, an 8-week course that offers students the chance to learn to listen with a composer’s ear through guided sound-walks, and creative sound projects (page 20).

The Orff Programvcm.bc.ca/the-orff-programBirth - 9 yearsOffered on Tuesdays AND Wednesdays. Involve your children in a creative, multi-sensory experience! Classes embrace all facets of music education, including music literacy, in an atmosphere of fun, joy, and discovery. Music concepts are taught using speech, story-telling, drama, body-percussion, dance and creative movement, instrumental play, improvisation, and composition.

Since instruction is sequential throughout the year, full-year registration is encouraged especially for the older classes. Mid-year registration for students 5 years and older requires the permission of the instructor. Placement for the second term is based on children’s ages as of September so that classes stay together for both terms.

One of the newest and most innovative approaches to learning music is made possible through the Children’s Music Journey. Award-winning computer software brings composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Joplin to life through animations, who lead children through creative music lessons that include learning to read and play music on the keyboard through improvising! Children learn the fundamentals of music through traditional musical games and activities, and playing together as an ensemble.

Individual Instruction

Individual InstructionPrivate instruction is one of the most popular things we offer. Regardless of your age, level, or instrument, we can find you a teacher that will inspire you to find your individual creative voice. With approximately 140 faculty members, the VCM will have you playing your best in no time!

The first step to beginning your individual lessons at the VCM is to tell us a bit about yourself and your musical goals. To do this, we ask that you fill out a referral form. It takes about five minutes to complete the form, which you can do online at vcm.bc.ca/student-referral-form, by phone, or in person. We’ll ask you some basic information, including your contact details, availability, musical experience and the instrument you are hoping to study. This will help us to match you with the teacher who is best suited to your individual needs. Your new teacher will contact you to arrange a short interview or “trial” lesson.

Students typically register for 36 lessons per year (18 each term). However, in consultation with your teacher, you may register for as many or as few lessons as you wish. While our academic terms begin in September and late January respectively, you may begin lessons at any time throughout the year. Lessons are also available through the summer.

Shared and Group Lessons, Chamber Music, and Band/Combo CoachingAnother option for those interested in learning to play an instrument is shared or group lessons. A shared lesson is attended by 2 or 3 students together, and the cost is equally divided among them. This is a great option for friends, parents and children, or musicians hoping to learn and enjoy music together. Individuals interested in shared lessons are encouraged to let us know during the referral process, and we will do our best to match you with another student of similar interest and ability.

Shared Group Lessons can include coaching a Chamber Music group, Jazz Combo, or Contemporary band. Ask your teacher about creating or joining a group that’s right for you.

New! Sound-walks: Listening and the Creative ProcessLearn to listen with a composer’s ears in this engaging, hands-on course. Students will go on guided sound-walks, learn about pioneering sound artists, and carry out their own creative projects, in a safe and inclusive environment. Collegium Program

Founded in 2006, the Collegium provides an enriched curriculum to talented, motivated, teenage classical musicians. The Collegium is a lively community of young musicians who are prepared to devote the time necessary to develop their musical talents and abilities.

There are four categories of membership - all are open to singers, pianists and other instrumentalists. Students audition for the Collegium, and if accepted are placed in the appropriate category for their age and performance level.

Full members are usually between the ages of 13 and 18, and have reached a level of notable proficiency on their instrument: generally Grade 9 or above. They participate in a busy schedule of masterclasses, coachings, seminars, performances, and residencies by distinguished guest artists. Associate members are students who, though they may be performing at an advanced level, cannot commit to the time required for full membership. They generally participate only in the chamber music component of the Collegium. Junior members are those students who show promise and dedication, but who are not yet at an age or performance level that qualifies them for either Full or Associate membership. Post-Secondary Associates: registered through Camosun as well as through the Collegium, they are expected to participate in all chamber music activities.

New and continuing Collegium students are chosen annually by auditions held in May, and again in December if spaces are available.

Tuition feesThe VCM is committed to making this special program available to students who can most benefit from it. To do that, we offset the true cost of Collegium study - in the case of full members by over 50% - through donations from private donors, foundations, corporations, and financial support from the VCM itself.

NOTE: Collegium Tuition is quoted and payable on a per term basis but students are expected to commit for the full academic year (two terms: September – January and January – May).

MasterclassesWhat is a masterclass?

A masterclass is a seminar for music students conducted by a master musician or clinician. Classes focus on repertoire, technique, and performance skills. Typically each student who attends plays a performance-ready piece and, in turn, listens while others play. The “master” will offer advice and guidance to the performer and to the group as a whole, often focusing on one or two performance aspects.

Masterclasses, which are often free for currently registered VCM students, offer the opportunity to learn from other VCM instructors, special guests, and each other. Non-VCM students may also take part for a drop-in fee. In addition to regular masterclasses in each department offered by a rotating roster of VCM faculty, past guests have included Jamie Parker, James Ehnes, Pepe Romero, Daniel Taylor, and many more.

Music Library

A library of over 70,000 titles is maintained at the VCM for the use of faculty and registered students. The resources include music for all instruments, reference materials and books on music, including biographies. There is also an extensive collection of recordings that can be borrowed.

Computers with internet access are available for research, and there is an electric keyboard equipped with headphones available to students for study.

The library is also home to the Student Lounge, a place to study, relax, and take a quick lunch break between classes.

The VCM Library is located at 920 Johnson Street in the Commercial Business Building, just to the right of the VCM’s main building.

In spring 2016, the VCM will be opening its very first satellite location at the new YM/WCA complex (#210 - 1314 Dumont Avenue) in Westhills, Langford.

Starting in October 2015, watch for special VCM sample sessions being offered in the Langford area, including Musical Story Times and Families Making Music for young children, and Contemporary music workshops and jam sessions for teens and adults.

Also watch for special faculty and student performances at local schools, recreation centres, and at the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa.

We tailor what we do to meet your needs. Sessions are offered in private or group settings depending on condition and the individual’s needs. Music therapists are trained to use signing, picture exchange, and other communication models if requested.

The Music Therapy studios are equipped with hundreds of instruments including grand pianos, large percussion instruments, hand-held desk bells, therapeutic and electronic equipment including keyboards, computers, parachutes, balls, and a full recording studio.

Multi-Sensory StudioThe VCM’s state-of-the-art Multi-Sensory Studio offers a peaceful retreat for music therapy participants. This is a studio where one can create, express themselves, find respite from their daily anxiety or pain, meditate and use guided imagery techniques. The equipment in the studio was carefully chosen to meet very specific needs. It includes laser-projected lighting, a Somatron vibro-acoustic recliner, flat-screen TV, bubble tower and fibre-optics.

The Alix Goolden Hall is also the perfect venue for weddings as a unique, picturesque, historical and non- denominational former church sanctuary that is both spacious and intimate. Our musicians love to get out into the community and perform. Through the ‘On The Road’ initiative, we can arrange to have some of our talented students and ensembles play at your next special event. We bring music to schools, nursing homes, garden parties, grand openings, corporate parties, birthdays, weddings and events of all description.

On the Road Hiring VCM Performers

To request an individual or group for your upcoming event, simply fill out our online Performance Request Form: vcm.bc.ca/about/hiring-performersOur role is to provide a matching service between people wanting to hire musicians for events and our students and faculty. We are not a booking or employment agency. There is a $35 connection fee for our for Performance Requests service to help cover administrative costs. Fee will be refunded if we are unable to connect you with a student performer.

Greater Victoria continues to grow and diversify, and the VCM is responding! Building on our Classical roots, the VCM’s new Contemporary reach will enable more people to connect with us in more ways than ever before. We have much in store for the coming years, including launching the VCM’s first satellite location in the new YM/YWCA centre in Westhills Langford next spring (see page 29 for more details).

However, we want your advice! To ensure the VCM is able to effectively meet the musical needs of our community, now and in the future, and to help guide us in a direction that answers these needs, we have created the VCM Community Advisory Committee.

If you are a VCM student, parent/guardian, or alumni, the VCM invites you to participate on this committee which meets generally once a month for an hour and a half. Discussions include how the community of Greater Victoria and beyond is developing musically, how the general demographic for the area will change in the coming 5 to 10 years, and what the VCM can do to provide programming that effectively meets the musical needs.

The Fine Print

Course SelectionIf you or your child plans to register for individual lessons for the first time, you may register for a single “trial” lesson with no obligation to register for more classes. Prospective students also may audit one group class session per semester before committing to the remaining classes. In order to receive a refund, trial lessons must be cancelled with 24 hours notice.

Individual Lessons Students typically have one lesson per week for 36 weeks (2 terms) from September to June, unless alternate arrangements are made directly with the instructor. Students may begin individual lessons at any time during the academic year.

Students will be referred to an appropriate instructor based on: musical background, goals, availability of lessons, and fee options. Contact us or visit our website to facilitate the referral process. Students may request lessons with a specific instructor, though the VCM cannot guarantee availability. Once an instructor is assigned, the instructor will contact the student/parent to make arrangements for lessons.

Group Classes & Ensembles Most group classes are full-year courses that run for 32 or 34 weeks (2 terms) from September to May. Adult Continuing Education classes follow the same terms as other group classes, but are often broken out into 8-, 10-, or 16-week modules. Students in group classes typically begin their studies in September. Classes fill up quickly – please register no later than one week prior to the start date. If space permits and the instructor agrees, a student may join a class already in progress. Some courses may require an application, interview, placement test, or audition as indicated in this course calendar. Fees, duration, and timetables for group classes are included with each class description.

The VCM Student CardEach student will be issued a VCM Student Card upon registration, valid for the term(s) in which the student is registered.

Practice RoomsCurrently registered VCM students may use practice rooms on a first come, first served basis, subject to availability. Policies for practice rooms and assigned keys are available at the administration office. Parking The VCM parking lot is reserved for staff and faculty passholders at all times. Street parking and public lots are available within short walking distance. After 5:00pm and on weekends, VCM patrons may park at McCall Bros. (Johnson and Vancouver). No ticket or pass is necessary; however in cases where the McCall’s lot is unavailable (i.e. during a service), signage will be posted.

TuitionTuition and other fees must be paid before a student is admitted to a lesson, class, or ensemble. Payment may be made by phone, mail or in person. Cheque, credit cards*, debit card, money orders, or cash are accepted. Cheques should be made payable to the Victoria Conservatory of Music. *with the exception of private lessons

Transaction FeesAs of September 2013, we eliminated all registration fees, opting instead for a small per transactionfeeof$2.00.Transactionfeeswillbechargedonceperreceipt;yearlyregistrationis encouraged.

Course Resource Fee and Music Rental FeeStudents are responsible for additional costs for music and books. For some courses a resource fee is due at the time of registration, which covers the cost of handouts, music, or supplies provided by the instructor. For other courses, such as ensembles, choirs, and orchestras, a music rental fee is due at registration to cover the cost of scores and parts. These fees are included in class descriptions.

VERY IMPORTANT: Instructors are directly dependent upon timely student payments. If payment is not received, the instructor is not paid. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Mid-term registrations require immediate payment.

PaymentPayment is required in full at the time of registration for the current term. A payment plan is available. If the payment plan is chosen, the balance is paid over equal monthly installments by pre-authorized debit on the 15th of each month, beginning with the first month of enrolment and continuing over a period of your choice, ending no later than the end of term. Transaction fees will be charged based on the number of payments selected.

Credit Card PolicyThe VCM does not accepts credit card payments for individual lesson tuition. Credit cards will continue to be accepted for group classes, concert tickets, donations, and other fees.

Tuition Fee Tax DeductionsRevenue Canada stipulates that tuition may qualify for a tax credit if all of the following apply:• StudentsarestudyingattheRCM/VCMGrade9levelorhigher• Coursefeesinanycalendaryearexceed$100• Thelessonsdevelopthestudent’sskillsinanoccupation OR• Yourchildisunder16yearsofageandhis/herprogramofstudyfulfillsthecriteriaforthe

Children’s Arts Tax Credit programPlease visit www.cra-arc.gc.ca for more information. Eligible students may request a tax letter from the VCM after February 15 of each year for the previous tax year.

Registration, Refund and Withdrawal Policies

The Fine PrintCancellation PolicyIf a student cancels a private lesson with reasonable notice, the instructor may wish to arrange a make-up lesson, pending the instructor’s schedule and the availability of studio space. The instructor is, however, under no obligation to make up the lesson, particularly if insufficient notice (under 24 hours) is given. Students are expected to be present for all scheduled lessons. This includes vacations, school/sport events, etc.

If an instructor cancels, they are obliged to make up the lesson. The VCM reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and to limit registration or change instructors. Should insufficient registration cause the cancellation of a class, fees will be refunded or the student may transfer to another course if room is available.

Refunds & WithdrawalsThere are NO refunds for ensembles or group classes, except in cases of illness/injury accompanied by a doctor’s note, as their viability is based on minimum enrolments. These programs are based on a sequential curriculum that does not allow for continuous intake, therefore the space cannot be refilled if a student withdraws mid-term.

Because instructors must commit to a schedule and book a studio space, refunds for individual lessons are permitted only in cases of illness or injury (for which a doctor’s note is required) or in exceptional circumstances, such as an unexpected family relocation. All withdrawal requests must be submitted in writing or by email to the Registrar’s Office. Withdrawal requests must be made in a timely fashion and within the term to which they apply. Requests for retroactive refunds received more than one month after the cessation of attendance at lessons will not be considered. Refunds will be processed according to thefollowingscheduleandaresubjecttoa$25processingfee:

TransfersThe VCM encourages students to remain with the same teacher throughout the term for which they have registered. However, in exceptional circumstances, transfers may be requested through the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar will consult with the Dean and respective Department Head on a case-by-case basis. The VCM does not guarantee transfer to a different teacher, but every effort will be made to ensure students are placed appropriately with an instructor who meets their individual needs.

Statutory HolidaysIndividual lessons that fall on statutory holidays have been included in the 36-week term. Because the office and building are closed on these days, an alternate lesson time should be arranged for those weeks. Please verify your lesson schedule with your teacher.

Please Note:The calendar is published before the beginning of the academic year, and while every attempt has been made to ensure its accuracy, the information within is subject to change. The VCM reserves the right to alter or cancel classes at any time, in cases of insufficient enrolment, instructor absence, etc. Group class and ensemble meetings that are cancelled as the result of inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances will not be re-scheduled; private lessons cancelled for such reasons may be made up at the instructor’s discretion.
