Vickie Lynn Belk
Vickie was born to the union of Lonnie and the late Maydell Belk on March 20, 1951 and departed this life on August 29, 1979. Vickie accepted Christ at a young age and was baptized at Oakland Baptist Church by the late Rev. L. H. Mills. She was one of Oakland’s faithful members. She served Oakland Baptist Church in various capacities such as the Director of the Board of Christian Education, Church Clerk, Sunday School Secretary and Chairperson of the Black History program. Vickie’s extended family had been members of Oakland Baptist Church since 1888. Vickie’s maternal great grandfather, J. W. Casey, and her great-great aunt-in-law, Clara Adams, were both founders of Oakland Baptist Church.
Vickie attended Minnie Howard Elementary School and graduated from T.C. Williams High School in 1969. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1974 from St. Augustine College in Raleigh, North Carolina. At the time of her death, Vickie was a Management Analyst in the Office of Operation and Finance at the Department of Agriculture. She had one son, Lamont A. Belk, an attorney who now resides in Decatur, Georgia. Vickie had four sisters, Judy Belk-Peeks, Kay Belk-Dailey, Aprile Belk-Sheard, Granada Belk and one brother, Lonnie G. Belk, Jr.
Because of Vickie’s devotion to the youth of Oakland Baptist Church, and her efforts to further the Christian ministry through education, the Vickie Belk Scholarship was established in her memory in 1980. This scholarship was created under the leadership of the late Rev. Arthur R. Preston, Pastor-Emeritus. The first recipient of the scholarship was Karen Davis in 1982 and since that time, scholarships have been awarded to at least 80 graduates. These scholarships would not be possible without your generous support and donations.
The Oakland Baptist Church family is proud that we have been able to honor the memory of Vickie every year during our Annual Scholarship Banquet. We pray that Vickie’s legacy will continue forever and be an inspiration to our fellow graduates.

A Message from Pastor & Sister Hayes
gÉ à{x ZÜtwâtàxá Éy ECCK Your graduation day marks an ending and a beginning. You’ve reached another milestone, yet there is so much more to contemplate. There were many times you probably thought this day would never come. But, here you are – young adults ready to begin a new chapter in your lives. Rejoice in all you’ve accomplished to this point. You’re about to leave your comfort zones and go into an environment with only your intuition and values passed on from your family. This next phase of your life might be a little scary, but wonderful at the same time. Philippians 4:4-7 says, “Rejoice in the Lord always, Again I will say, rejoice! Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
You will surely experience many things in the months ahead. Just remember
that apart from a personal and vital faith in Jesus Christ, it is impossible to wage a winning effort against the system called “the world.” God desires good things for you and has a way of balancing out the good with the bad. So remember to seek His guidance for the decisions you have to make. Also know that your Church family is here to help you in any way we can. A famous theologian once said: “Age has little to do with achievement and nothing to do with commitment; a godly walk is basic to a positive life; and convictions are a matter of choice, not force. So, in your quest to discover yourselves, remember to be true to yourselves - you’re the only one you’ll have to live with for the rest of your lives. Finally, God deserves your very best; nothing more, nothing less, nothing else. We pray God’s riches and blessings upon each of you.
Congratulations Graduates!

WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU. CONTINUE TO PURSUE
YOUR DREAM AS YOU TRUST GOD TO LEAD YOU
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” -- Marianne Williamson
