FRONT COVER: RAAF F-35AVictorian companies form a significant part of the national supply chain

supporting the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Project. Chair's Foreword

Victoria has a proud and rich history as a major national centre for the military aerospace industry. Some of the current

aircraft operated by the RAAF such as the F/A 18, PC -9 and P3 Orion were either assembled, upgraded or had major supply

chain involvement from industry in Victoria.

Our industry is now focused on the manufacture of aerospace components for military and commercial global supply chains,

the production of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, systems development and the provision of engineering and logistics services for

the sustainment of military aircraft. In particular, the success of Victoria’s industry in winning the major national share of F35

Joint Strike Fighter supply chain work is testimony to the capabilities of our local industry.

The Australian Industry & Defence Network – Victoria, with support from the Government of Victoria, manages and supports

the Victorian Defence Alliance – Aerospace. Membership is open to all companies operating in Victoria with the potential to

supply products and services to the military and adjacent commercial aerospace markets.

The Alliance has been established to support the military aerospace industry in Victoria to win work in the domestic and

international supply chains. It presents a single point of focus for companies supplying and sustaining military aircraft

and systems to the Australian and international markets. The Alliance supports industry through advocacy, provision of

information on marketing opportunities and by establishing effective pathways for connecting Alliance members with industry

primes and key government stakeholders. It also provides opportunities for networking, collaboration and mentoring.

The Alliance has more than 120 member companies and these are listed at the back of this Directory. A significant number of

member companies are promoting their capabilities in this Directory.

I invite all those seeking proven and trusted partners for aerospace industry work to consider the capabilities of our Alliance

Members.

Victorian Aerospace Capabilities

Victoria’s military and commercial aerospace industry has a proven record of success in supporting the global supply

chains of manufactured components used by aerospace primes. Our industry has also been highly successful in

systems development and in the provision of engineering and logistics services to support the sustainment of RAAF

aircraft.

This success has been built of the capabilities of the many Victorian small to medium enterprises that support global

aircraft manufacture and provide the services required to sustain the aircraft used by our nation’s air force. These

companies have demonstrated their ability to meet the needs of the local and international aerospace industry and

are firmly established as trusted partners of that industry. They are well positioned to meet the future needs of the

aerospace industry.

The capabilities and credentials that form Victoria’s highly respected and capable military and commercial aerospace

industry are identified in this Directory against the following broad capability areas:

• Analysis, Modelling & Simulation

• Autonomous Systems

• Avionics / Electrical Systems

• Design & Engineering

Victorian Defence AlliancesThe Victorian Defence Alliances have been established through a partnership between the Australian Industry & Defence

Network – Victoria and the Victorian Government. Membership of the Alliances is open to all companies operating in Victoria

with the potential to supply products and services to the national and international defence industry market.

The Alliances bring focus, cohesion and unity to the actions and initiatives of companies with a shared and common

purpose in specific domains of Victoria’s defence industry sector. They allow member companies to act together to deliver

timely, cost effective and innovative solutions to meet Defence needs.

The Alliances support industry through advocacy, networking, collaboration, mentoring and capability building to assist

member companies to win work in national and international defence industry supply chains. Importantly, the Alliances

provide effective pathways for connecting Alliance members with industry primes and key government stakeholders.

Victorian Government SupportVictoria is Australia’s State of defence industry excellence. Victoria’s

defence industry has more than 300 companies employing around 7,000

people who make equipment and provide services for defence activities.

Renowned for its advanced manufacturing, world class research and

development and possessing a highly skilled workforce, Victoria has

proven expertise in delivering complex projects.

Victoria’s innovative world class aerospace design and manufacturing

capabilities make a significant contribution to Australia’s military

aerospace industry. Victoria has around 50 aerospace companies

supplying the Australian and global defence industry. Victorian companies

have secured 70 per cent of all work awarded to Australia over the past

decade for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) project, the most of any

State. The JSF project will supply 72 planes to the Royal Australian

Air Force (RAAF) including associated facilities, weapons and training.

The project is capitalising on Victoria’s extensive experience in meeting

military aerospace requirements.

Lockheed Martin is partnering Pilatus Aircraft and Hawker Pacific to

provide a new Australian Defence Force pilot training system at RAAF

East Sale. Textron Systems Australia designs and manufactures

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for military and civilian applications. Thales’

Australia’s Melbourne Centre of Excellence for Air Traffic Management

develops and exports airspace control systems. Boeing Aerostructures

Australia, based in Melbourne, is Australia’s only designer and

manufacturer of advanced composite aerostructure components for

commercial aircraft.

Victoria also possesses significant research and development capabilities

with the Defence Science and Technology Group’s Aerospace Division’s

headquarters in Melbourne, the Defence Materials Technology Centre

undertakes research and development including materials analysis

and propulsion and energy storage, and the Defence Science Institute

facilitates defence aerospace research.

Victoria’s innovative military aerospace capabilities include:

• Advanced composite materials and production

• Component design, testing and certification

• Simulation and modelling

• Unmanned aerial vehicles

• Manufacturing

• Software development

• Platform support and systems engineering

• Air traffic management systems

• Maintenance, repair and overhaul

The Victorian Government is assisting the State’s aerospace defence

companies through:

• Targeted investment advocacy, promoting Victoria as a competitive

location for major prime defence contractors and projects

• Linking Victorian industry into domestic and international defence

supply chains

• Promoting Victorian defence industry capabilities at domestic and

international trade shows and missions

• Facilitating training, innovation, research and development

• Providing industry support to help companies improve productivity

and competitiveness in global markets.

The Victorian Government, through the Department of Economic

Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources, will continue to work

closely with the Australian Industry Defence Network – Victoria and the

Victorian Defence Alliance – Aerospace. The State Government is also

supported by the Victorian Defence Industry Advocate to promote and

develop the State’s defence industry. The government has released a

strategy to grow the defence technologies sector. The strategy can be

viewed at www.business.vic.gov.au/futureindustries
